We don’t get taxpayer money, state or federal, for anything.

Our tuition does not cover extras like that. That’s what fundraising and boosters are for. The problem with the ac is that the building is so old that apparently it would be a huge undertaking and expense.

This month is a big fundraiser for us, our walk/run. The best thing about it is 100% of the money comes back to the school, no vendors involved. The goal is for every student to get a minimum pledge of $150. If we hit it, they get a day off. Last year the PTO (almost all of us moms) donated water filling stations if we are hit our goal in addition to a day off.. we did and we did.
Not sure what we’ll add this year, but I know it won’t be ac!

One thing I’ll give a ton a credit to is that what I’ve seen in private schools is that they utilize their payroll wisely. Yes, that means more work for the employees, but imo it’s better than the wastefulness of public schools. Too much of the money for education is being sucked up by admin positions. This is a problem in America, imo.
Extras? really? they are considered "extras" ? o_O

Our public school teachers actually are paid on average more than private school here.

There's no way I'd be paying to send my (theoretical) children to an unairconditioned school. As someone who went to one of those, it's miserable.

They're actually looking at rebuilding B's school on existing athletic fields. It's in such bad shape including the lack of AC. I was so unhealthy when I went there. Went to college, where the buildings were actually older but better maintained with AC. It was like flipping a switch.

On average public school teachers do get paid more than private school teachers across the US.
I wasn’t referring to the teachers though, they deserve their money! I’m talking about the amount of administrative positions in school districts.

T’s school is pretty and in good shape, they wouldn’t need to rebuild, would be nice to have ac in the existing structure! September and May are the only times when it gets hot here, they’ve determined that the expense of doing so isn’t worth the return. I’m not willing for my tuition to go up to cover it..they have fans and can wear uniform shorts during the hot months. The kids are also allowed to have reusable water bottles thru October and then starting again in April.

Sports should be extra imo. Always kills me that some of the worst failing school districts have some of the nicest football stadiums, and how so many public schools have gorgeous indoor pools/diving facilities.

My high school did not have a natatorium, we had to pay to rent out time from the local public school.lol

New York also doesn't randomly go up to 97 degrees in September.
In the 80’s, New York public schools rarely ever closed. There was a snow storm back in April ‘83. We got like 2 feet of snow. Schools were open. I only lived across the street , so I walked across, and then whichever teachers were there brought us to the auditorium. Not enough teachers showed up because most lived in Nassau County. The roads were a mess. We stayed for a couple of hours in the auditorium and were then sent home. I remember this incident because during this snowstorm, my stepdads brand new Honda Accord had its radio stolen. Anyone remember the days where you could install removable radios for cars? He ended up getting one after that.
In terms of heat, I cannot remember temperatures from when I was a kid. I do remember our teachers letting us go to the sinks that were in our room and running our hands under the water to cool off.

I just finished watching a preview of our newest commercials coming out.. featuring sesame street characters... cute/funny stuff!

Most commercials I can't stand, but I've always enjoyed those Farmer's ones. I also channel surf a lot, especially when commercials come on, but if I see a Farmer's one, I don't change the channel until it's over. That's really geeky behavior. :geek:

I don’t remember having any ac in schools, except the computer rooms. We had windows. We never were given a day off because it was hot either. Public school in NY. I have a friend on Long Island who is a high school English teacher. Her salary is over $125k a year. That isn’t including benefits.

We never got out of school for heat either. I recall there would always be days in June when we'd sit there and sweat buckets. Miserable learning environment -- I guess they figured that the Northeast didn't have too many really hot days toward the end of the school season.

Heading out in a while to attend an artists' group (and guest artist presentation) this evening. This group has some very accomplished and professional artists and sculptors, and I am way out of that league. :jawdrop:

But my art teacher (you may recall I had a few free lessons with him, at the community center in August), invited me to be his guest. I didn't want to be rude and turn him down. (I figure I'll get there a few minutes before the presentation, so that I can quietly slip in the back of the room, unnoticed.) After the presentation and before the evening is over, I'll go talk to my art teacher. (I'm just avoiding being introduced to a bunch of people, who will be asking me about "my work". Don't want to tell them I didn't get beyond stick figures! :p :hilarious:
