Hugh Jackman talks Wolverine rewrites and status
Comments: 1750%Strike Back below!
by: Dave Davis Sep. 26, 2011

We'll still see Marvel's sinewy shredded on the big screen, but THE WOLVERINE will just slash through Japan a little later than anticipated.

Hugh Jackman is out promoting REAL STEEL, a movie with alloys far more blunt than the razor-fisted mutant, and talked with The Playlist about the ongoing delays: "Now that [director James Mangold's] on board, we’re ready to go. For [LES MISERABLES] to work, we would have had to start WOLVERINE, basically, yesterday. So when we needed to press the button, we weren’t quite ready. So it will happen straight after."

Christopher McQuarrie (THE USUAL SUSPECTS) penned the script, although previously attached director Darren Aronofsky did some tinkering, and now the screenplay is getting another rewrite by Mark Bomback (LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD, CONSTANTINE, JACK THE GIANT KILLER).

But Jackman remains confident in the script: "When a director takes over any script they need to make it their movie. So Jim hired Mark to help him make the movie his own. Darren had worked on the script himself and taken it in a certain direction that was right for him. And that would have been a great version of the movie. I’ve seen Jim’s version now and, you know, Jim saw things that weren’t working for him that were working for Darren. And I’ve got to hand it to Fox and to Jim, it’s easy when you start with the best script we’ve had from Chris McQuarrie. Which is why Darren signed on. So once you have that, that’s 80, 85 percent of your movie."

As we've heard, the movie will be set in Japan and finds Logan meeting his true love and facing a ninja clan. But the story won't just draw from Frank Miller's initial miniseries -- it also seems to be sampling from the Uncanny X-Men comic arc (which featured villains Silver Samurai and Viper, both expected in the movie). "It’s a little darker and, I think, a little more true to the character. If you read all of [the Japanese saga] there is a lot of it that is a little disparate and some of it’s got X-Men in it. There’s a wedding and all that. So we take license with that."

Men in Black 3 to Feature Retro Aliens
Source: ShockTillYouDrop.com September 27, 2011

While a fair share of set photos have leaked out from the upcoming Men in Black 3, most of them showcase the agents themselves and none of the new alien designs. Fans shouldn't worry, though, as ComingSoon.net's ShockTillYouDrop.com had a chance to speak with makeup and effects legend Rick Baker, who promises that not only will we being seeing new aliens, but that classic sci-fi fans in particular will be in for a treat next summer.

"The thing that's cool is there is a time travel element [to the story]," he says, "Where I had fun is that we go back to the Men in Black headquarters of the '60s. The first thing I said is that we should have retro aliens, not aliens of 2012. More based on B-movies of the '50s and '60s. So, a lot of the aliens are based on that. Space suits with fishbowl helmets and ray guns."

The plot is said to feature Will Smith's Agent J traveling back in time and re-teaming with a younger version of Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones in present day and Josh Brolin in the past). Newcomers to the franchise for the third go-round include Jemaine Clement, Emma Thompson, Nicole Scherzinger, Alice Eve and Michael Stuhlbarg.

Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, Men in Black 3 hits 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D theaters on May 25, 2012.

I am concerned about this decision. Cleary King is a master of the genre but The Shining is possibly one of the greatest horror movies of all time. Not to mention the genius of Kubrick could never be matched.

Dreamworks bringing Roald Dahl's Big Friendly Giant to life
Comments: 6100%Strike Back below!
by: Paul Tassi Sep. 28, 2011

Roald Dahl was one of my favorite authors growing up, and one that I don't actually mind hearing about when his books are being turned into films. I thought Wes Anderson's FANTASTIC MR. FOX went quite well, and I could see a similar result happening for this next venture.

Dreamworks is taking one of my favorite Dahl books, The BFG, and turning it into a feature film. The letters stand for "Big Friendly Giant" and the book is about a boy who befriends a nice giant, but must combat a host of other larger, meaner, man-eating giants that scoop up humans at night.

Despite what you might initially think, this is not going to Dreamworks animation and will instead be a live action version of the book. I think that the technology is in place to make that work, as I think it's possible to render giants and regular humans together in a way that doesn't look too goofy. That was the least of GULLIVER'S TRAVELS' problems.

The script is being written by ET's Melissa Mathison, but no actors or directors are attached the project yet. Can you think of anyone for the director's chair right off the bat? Anyone who is asking to play a giant? I vote Jason Momoa as one of them.

Sony to stop paying for your 3D glasses...

Sony to stop paying for your 3D glasses
by: Paul Tassi Sep. 28, 2011

This news item might be cause for celebration for some, as it could signal a big step in the slow and steady decline of 3D movies.

Many people don't know this, myself included until a few minutes ago, but when you're shelling out $3-$4 extra for a 3D feature, that price does not actually include the 3D glasses that you're handed before you walk in. I long figured that was the bulk of the price, as outside of the one time conversion of the theater to 3D, what else was there to pay for? As it turns out, just "the experience."

So who's footing the bill for the glasses? The studio. Way back when, in order to help get theaters to convert to 3D, Disney offered to pay for the glasses themselves. Other studios followed suit, and thus the standard practice was born. But with glasses adding $5 to $10M to the cost of a big budget film, many studios are mulling over the idea of ditching this policy, with Sony being the first to act.

The studio says they will no longer shell out for glasses, and it's now the responsibility of the theater to pay for them. With razor thin margins on ticket sales already (the majority of a movie theater's revenue comes from concessions, which is why 5 cents of popcorn costs $5), they're not going to be too happy.

Why does this signify the death of 3D? Well, if all studios follow Sony's lead (I imagine at least a few more will), and the theaters have to eat the cost, they're not going to have nearly as much incentive to plug 3D. And if the cost is passed on to consumers instead, increasing ticket prices for 3D movies even further? With the format already suffering, it's enough to make people walk away from it for good, and could ultimately kill 3D as more than ever, moviegoers realize it's simply not worth the 30-100% markup.

"Just because they're super heroes doesn't mean they're super friends," Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) told the magazine. Joss Whedon was actually counting on a little bit of friction between cast members, since there's so much in the actual story. "I was like, well, if they hate each other, I guess we can use that. But they don't."

Following yesterday's comments from Chris Hemsworth about Patty Jenkins possibly directing Marvel Studios' Thor 2, Jenkins herself talked to Vulture about being in talks for the sequel.

She was asked on Monday if Thor 2 was the next film on her slate. "I can't say, but yes," she said laughing. "I can't say anything definitive, but it's exciting to be in talks with them about it."

She added that she knows she's an unusual choice for the project. "I think Marvel is really ballsy to think outside the box. And I think everyone they've talked to and hired has been interesting."

Thor 2 is scheduled for a July 26, 2013 release.

Location Revealed for Bond 23's Opening Scenes

MI6-HQ.com reports that the opening scenes for Bond 23 will be shot in Istanbul. Producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli met with Ertugrul Günay, Turkish Culture and Tourism Minister, on Tuesday to confirm plans for the filming to take place there in November.

"The opening scenes are planned to be filmed in Istanbul, but some other places will also be used outside Istanbul for the film," Günay said.

"James Bond is no stranger to Istanbul, and as the series marks its 50th anniversary next year, it is fitting that 007 would return to one of the most loved locations in the history of the franchise," Wilson added, "it really just feels like we are coming home."

Both From Russia With Love and The World is Not Enough featured scenes filmed in Istanbul.

The site says that locations that will be used include the city's historical neighborhood Sultanahmet Square. "There are, however, a number of locations, including the waterside and shores of the Bosporus, in consideration for the 10-15 minutes of the movie that is to be filmed in Turkey," Günay revealed.

Also mentioned is that the casting of a villain's girlfriend has begun with a search of Turkish actresses.

Directed by Sam Mendes, Bond 23 is scheduled for a November 9, 2012 release.

Rooney Mara Eyed for Old Boy?
Source: Twitch September 29, 2011

As Spike Lee's take on Old Boy moves towards production, Twitch reports that Rooney Mara is being eyed for the female lead.

A remake of Park Chan-wook's Oldboy, the film focuses on a man named Joe (Dae-su Oh in the original) who is captured and imprisoned in a hotel room for over two decades (15 years in the original) with no understanding as to why. When he is suddenly released, he's told that he has just four days to determine the reason for his imprisonment.

Mara, who next plays the title character in David Fincher's take on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, opposite Josh Brolin already signed on to play Joe.

Originally a late '90's manga series by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi, the American version will apparently, as in that series, go by that two word title rather that the single world Oldboy that Chan-wook's version used.

Spike Lee is set to direct the film with a script from Mark Protosevich and is eyeing an early 2012 production start.

New Line to Reboot Mortal Kombat!....

Check it out:

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=82709

New Line to Reboot Mortal Kombat!
Source: Silas Lesnick September 29, 2011

There's some great news today for fans of of the mega-popular Mortal Kombat franchise. New Line/Warner Bros. have announced that Kevin Tancharoen, the man behind Mortal Kombat: Legacy, will helm a big-screen adaptation of the game, which celebrates its 20th anniversary next year.

Formerly known as a choreographer, music video director and the man behind the 2009 musical remake, Fame, Tancharoen turned heads when his short film Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, hit YouTube in 2010. (Check it out by clicking here.)

Following the viral sensation of that short, Tancharoen was brought on board to direct this year's popular Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series. The film version, which he says is a separate take on the property, reteams him with Rebirth writer Oren Uziel. Speaking with ComingSoon.net just moments ago, Tancharoen discussed the road to a Mortal Kombat feature and how shooting is planned for early 2012 with a tentative release sometime in 2013.

CS: This is some big news! Congratulations! Can you say, in your own words, what today's announcement means for you?
Kevin Tancharoen: It's very exciting! I'm so happy that I've been a gigantic fan of this title since I was a little kid. This is a dream come true for me. I'm really happy that New Line and Warner Bros. saw the potential after the "Mortal Kombat: Legacy" webseries we did and the numbers that the videogame has done. I'm extremely grateful because it's been a big, big journey for me.

CS: It seems like it wasn't all that long ago that your original short was leaked online and everyone was raving about the look of it.
Tancharoen: Yeah! Oddly enough, that wasn't originally supposed to make it online. I had intended to make that for private use because I can't deny that my background is very musical. It comes from "Fame" and Britney Spears. I knew that, because of that, no one was going to give me the money to do the stuff that I really wanted to do, which was action, horror films and genre movies. Comic book adaptations. The kind of stuff that I grew up infatuated with. I made that because I knew that nobody was going to give me a shot and I had to do it myself. I made it to send around to executives. The reason that it went online is actually something that makes me seem a little stupid. I wanted to send it out to some colleagues for some input. I wasn't even completely done yet. The file was like two and half gigs and I don't have an FTP site. I'm not that fancy. A friend of mine said, "Hey, you can do it for free on YouTube. Just make the link private and whoever has the link will be the only ones who can see it." I stupidly, because I'm not YouTube saavy, didn't know how to make the link private. I thought I did and it then went public. It was up there and I was actually very nervous when it went public because I thought I was going to get in a mess of trouble.

CS: Well, it certainly paid off!
Tancharoen: I know! It would have a been a great thing if I had meant to do it from the get-go. It would have made me look a whole lot smarter.

CS: How long has the film version been in discussion? Is this something that has just been decided on today?
Tancharoen: The idea has been floating around even before I made the short film. I was on the mixing stage at Warner Bros. and I had heard about Mortal Kombat and went, "Oh my god! That's amazing! I know how to do that. I know how to do fight sequences. I know how to choreograph it." After that, it kind of went away. Then, after the web series did so well, we started talking seriously with New Line about doing a film. They were like, "The numbers are proven and they really like the style and the storytelling." They said we should go for it.

CS: Is this something that's going to continue elements of the web series?
Tancharoen: No, this is a new take and it's not going to continue directly off of the web series. There will be elements that are familiar to the people that have watched it, but it is its own movie. I wanted to make sure that, regardless of anything else, that it's a good movie. It doesn't have to be something that you will have had to have seen all ten episodes previously to understand or have played the videogame to understand. It'll live on its own and be its own film and will hopefully be something that can continue on. It's such a big story that you could have two or three movies, but I want to make sure that the first one is good on its own.

CS: One of the cool things about "Mortal Kombat" as a property is that everyone knows what it is and the mythology, for anyone, can range from "people fighting" to something much deeper.
Tancharoen: Exactly! And I've always been a fan of properties that have been able to expand their universe in different ways. The easiest example for me to mention is Batman. You have Batman, the Nolan films, which are their own universe. Right now, you've got Batman: Arkham Asylum, which is another completely different universe. Then you have all the Batman animated stuff, which is a series of completely different takes. Yet it's all based around the same idea of concept and character. I do think that Mortal Kombat is big enough that you can allow for that kind of character and let in multiple forms of storytelling.

CS: Is it too soon to say which characters we might be seeing in this?
Tancharoen: That I have to keep a secret for now, but you will be seeing a lot of your favorites. That I can guarantee!

CS: What about cast members of the web series? Any chance they'll reprise their roles or pop up for cameos?
Tancharoen: That's another one that I'm not able to answer yet and I do apologize for that.

CS: What's the timeline looking like? When is production being targeted?
Tancharoen: They want to shoot early next year and hopefully get it out in 2013.

CS: So the script has been written?
Tancharoen: We've got a good draft of the script, but we're still working on it with Oren Uziel, who wrote the short. It's great. It's really great.
