Trip Report That's OK- We Make Our Own Magic - COMPLETED

I've gone back and forth with myself over the last few months if I'd do a trip report at all since this wasn't the trip I envisioned, but I keep coming back to all of the photos I took and how it would be nice to share some of them. So, I guess I'm doing this. Still, I'm going to put this out there right now...there were a number of things that bothered me during our trip. Nothing was ruined or anything like that, but I am going to share both the good and the bad and it won't be sugar coated or pixie dusted. Still, it's been about 2.5 months since the trip, so some of my negativity has mellowed a bit too, so that'll help.

It's been a couple of years since I posted a trip report on here, so I'm a bit rusty with all of this. I didn't do one for our 2016 trip since it involved another Disney forum group and then we had a longer than average break from vacations because we went through a move. Yup, all that vacation money went into fun things like paint, carpet, etc.

First off...we moved out of our old house in late June, lived in a hotel (family of 4 plus a dog) for about a week and a half, and then moved into our new home in early July. About a month before the closing on our old house, my husband suggested we go to Disney for Christmas. We're not rookies and know this is not the ideal time for crowds and pricing, but it's what worked with everything else. Of course, this also meant I was dealing with 180 dining booking right as all of this moving stuff was hitting peak stress levels. Oh, and since my hubby didn't want me putting any $ into vacation stuff until we were in our new home, I didn't have the +10 luxury when booking dining. Nothing like being up at 4:45am CT for 8 days in a row as you're about a week out from a closing. We are also Houston area and live in part of town that was badly flooded by Hurricane Harvey, so there were a handful of days where I had to sit there wondering if we'd be dealing with more home things for our $ vs. vacation. We were very lucky and did not flood, but a week later, my family went through Hurricane Irma, so that was also super nerve wracking as well. Thankfully, everyone came out of that OK too, and it was pretty much smooth sailing until trip time.

So here are the details...
WHO: Me (Sandy), my husband David, my girls Samantha and Kendall...and for a portion of the trip, my brother, SIL, their kids and my parents.

38317552525_c152d9f71b_b.jpg

Yup, this is all of us just before being seated at 'Ohana.

WHEN: December 15th-24th (16th-23rd at WDW)
WHERE: The Swan...We knew we'd be between peak and holiday pricing for our trip, but after staying at POR in 2016, we decided we only want to stay Epcot area or monorail loop for future trips. I didn't feel like scaling back on our dining plans (a decision I'd regret), so I chose the Swan over a Disney resort. Even with all of the fees, the Swan's overall price per night was on par with the mods, but we got the great location, beds, and bigger rooms for the price.
WHAT: I bought 6 day single park tickets. While I do enjoy the flexibility with hoppers, I feel like we waste so much time hopping to justify the cost. So, we skipped them. We're also not DDP people, so it was OOP for us. My parents and brother are now APs, but decided TiW wasn't worth it to them after having it for a year, so we rely on passholder discounts and Disney Visa discounts for food.
HOW: Driving...it's a cost saver, but I've been asked that we fly for any future trips. I think everyone is kind of over the road trip.

So, if you've ever seen my past reports, you know I like a surprise. It's gotten to the point that the kids asked to be surprised. I knew they wouldn't be completely blindsided because I asked them for a bunch of feedback. So, this became more of a...you know it's coming, but you won't know when. At least planning things around the holidays makes it easier to have trip goodies delivered to your home without tipping them off.

I was excited for this one because I was finally going to get to do the surprise pick up at school. The kids go to different schools now, so it was a bit more challenging, but I was ready. It also helps that we celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah and with Hanukkah starting a few days before our trip, I had a few days where I could work in trip goodies into their gifts without making them suspicious. Honestly, the biggest challenge was packing. I had to take some time off from work, add things to suitcases that are in the closets in increments that wouldn't raise any eyebrows and then pull it all together in the few hours of school on the last day before Christmas break. Easy..right? Oh, and the last Hanukkah gift before the trip was Disney gift cards, and as far as the kids knew, we'd be heading to go shopping after school let out for break so they could spend them. I just never said where we'd be spending them. LOL :hilarious:

Samantha was the first to get picked up, but they were having a holiday party and I had to get the car ready. So, David went into the party while I prepped the vehicle. It looked better in my mind that it came out, but it still worked. I had light up mouse ears on the head rests, light necklaces draped around them, Disney plush, and obviously all of the luggage in the back.

39042458612_aa3b9b9ff7_k.jpg

Unfortunately, I completely screwed up the filming of the surprise reveal for Samantha. That being said, it was great! We totally got her and she was so giddy. I did get Kendall's surprise, but she's not as much fun because she claims she had it all figured out.

I did still have one surprise still up my sleeve that would totally get her- more on that a bit later.

We hit really bad traffic getting out of our town since all of the schools were letting out for the holidays, but once we were out, it was a pretty easy drive. Unfortunately, with the later start, there was no way we were going to make our goal of getting to Tallahassee. We couldn't leave any earlier because Kendall had exams, so we'd have to settle for spending the night in Pensacola. We woke up bright and early the next day and started heading towards Orlando. I absolutely hate the drive through the FL panhandle, but it is what it is. We also hit really bad traffic on I-75 due to an accident right before the FL Turnpike, but we made it to WDW by just after 3pm.

This one's a bit better...

*********************************************************

So, that's it for now. I normally speed through my TRs, but I have so much going on with work, house stuff, kid stuff, etc. that this might actually take me a while...especially once I get into the bulk of the pictures. All of this so far was done on my phone, which is just ok, but I finally got a new camera and lens. So, I took A LOT of pictures. Are they all amazing? No, but they're much better. :)

I also accidentally picked Large sizing for the photos on this first post. I promise to pick a more normal size for subsequent posts.

Coming up...More of Dec 16th- check in drama and excitement, a room with a view, parking, and dinner/fireworks plans.

Pluto was pretty awesome. I was laughing too hard to take any pictures, but he sneaked up on Sam and started sniffing her. It was a riot! Ultimately, we just sat there for about 10 minutes watching characters go back and forth...

We had a good ride, but we had last minute panic from Kendall who didn't think about her sunglasses and was crying because she might lose them going upside down. I held them...crisis averted!

This is one of the few rides where I would consider buying a ride pic, but nothing has come close to our 2016 pic on here. I mean, this is EPIC! They claim they weren't scared.

This year's was OK, but the horrible pic I took of the screen was enough. I know the Dec 2017 pic is blurry...but I still think 2016 is so much better.

38406185674_9268629a14_c.jpg

We checked out the shop for a bit. Sam loved the drumsticks and I think we were all in love with rocker Stitch.

Took a quick pic of TOT since everyone promised Samantha to ride with her later on. So, she'd already started reminding everyone of this promise. I always wind up going on with her and David and Kendall have never been...so, this would be on everyone's minds all day.

38406164514_3e5b0cd723_c.jpg

And then Sam went on to pose in front of RnRC...just to be photobombed.

I can't believe out of all of the times I have ridden RnR, I have never noticed this ^

That is awesome!

We went through as single riders in 2014 and spent a lot of time in this room, so I think that's the only reason I noticed it and do so on subsequent trips. It's very cool though :)

I’m gonna have to make sure & check out Launch Bay next time I’m in DHS. Looks like it’s got some different stuff than the Disneyland version; plus BB-8! I’m not too coaster friendly so I’ve never seen seen the queue for RnRC.

We never got a chance to really explore all of the Star Wars stuff at DL when we were last there and I'm not sure if it was at the level it's at now. Still, there are some really cool things in there and it's worth a stop inside if you're a Star Wars fan. I love coasters, but it's taken some arm twisting to get David and Kendall to go on.

Ultimately, we were just burning time before our lunch ADR at Sci Fi. I'd always been nervous about going here since I know several people had allergy issues, but we tried it in 2016 and things went pretty well. We also liked most of what we ordered and it's on the cheaper side of TS options, so we decided to try it again. So, time to head to our ADR...

Last time we were there, I was bummed that we didn't get one of the traditional cars. We were a party of 6 last time, so it was just one of those normal tables sandwiched into a car frame. In fact, this was our table from last time...

24255347157_98b044df27_c.jpg

What's funny...after trying to eat in the normal cars, I like the other table better. It's just a very awkward and limited eating space in the regular cars. Oh well. I started off with the season milkshake...GINGERBREAD!

24255349627_b636408a00_c.jpg

We started off with spinach artichoke dip this time, but no pics. I will say it was awful...watery and lacking seasoning. The chips were also stale. For entrees, David and Sam got burgers and Kendall and I got the Reuben.

The burgers (like last time) were good, but the Reuben...not so much. Definite food regrets with our ordering during this visit.

All in all, it's a fun venue, but the meal was just OK. So, we waved good-bye to Walt...

HS was now pretty packed and since we were stuck here (one of the downsides of not having hoppers), we needed to figure out something. So, we walked towards Muppets.

We were positioned for the last few rows and people were trying to jump in front not realizing doing so would cause them to be hit by the doors. And of course the CMs are having to deal with this idiocy day in and day out.

I thought Jedi Training looked like a lot of fun, but both girls are kind of past that target age group that would really appreciate this...well, that's what they were telling me. So, I guess it's good that I didn't go out of my way to do it. Still, it was entertaining and I took a lot of pics...

After the show, we thought we might try and see Indy, but it was very limited standing room only.

I've been dealing with a lot of foot and knee issues...something that will impact me throughout this trip...so, I didn't want to risk it by standing like that.

So, we just sat and hung out for a while until it was Star Tours FP time. While the kids were really bored and questioning my planning at this point, it was a good time for me to get pics of the holiday decor and the area, in general.

We were waiting on our Star Tours FP window to open since there was really nothing else of interest to do that wasn't a major wait. I think we got there 7 min early, so the green light didn't go off on the FP reader, but the CM said we were close enough. OK...that's new for me!

I honestly can't recall how long we were back at the room, but long enough to really relax...and long enough for the kids to seriously consider just skipping our last FP and heading back in much later for dinner. Then I reminded Samantha that the last FP I had booked was TOT. Yeah...that got her up and going and it got Kendall and David up and whining. I got them out the door, saw that housekeeping was still on our floor, and was feeling pretty good about things.

We saw the swan boats on the way out, but the kids were bummed to find out we wouldn't have time for them.

David suggested we walk and was going to start heading for the bridge...

39123344141_8f1f7041d7_c.jpg

But my feet wanted no part of that. So, we headed towards the boat. Even saw the Santa and Mrs. Claus set up as we were heading towards the line.

Some woman in line with us suggested it was going to take forever for us to get a boat and she abruptly left the line. A few minutes later (like no more than 3), a boat arrived.

...and we were off!

...back to HS!

And here's our goal!

38241419365_87a8a380d8_c.jpg

The kids were even kind enough to pose for a pic. I think Kendall thought this might even get her out of having to ride. Um...no.

24262787187_221b341744_c.jpg

Blurry, but Sam pretty much took off for TOT after this...

38241416735_eb777b5463_c.jpg

As we got closer to TOT, we started hearing buzz about it being closed. It looked funky on the app, yet we could clearly see a line. As we got closer, we found out that all standbys were being turned away, no new FPs were being issued, but existing FPs could get in line. We were also warned that only one side was operating, so it would likely be a 30-45 minute wait. Kendall took this as a sign that we shouldn't ride, but David reasoned with her...telling her it's Sam's fave and if she wants to wait, we're waiting. Yeah...so we waited...and I took pics outside and in as we waited.

(still waiting at TOT)

The line was pretty slow (slower than we thought it would be), but obviously, we eventually got in there.

I am no fan of this ride (well, except for the theme details). I love roller coasters, but I hate straight up drops...especially without warning. Still, I can have fun with it and be a good sport for Samantha. David, on the other hand, has said he's never riding again. Oh, and Kendall...well, she was crying and screaming hysterically...begging for it to stop. We had the hardest time convincing her at the end that it was actually over. So, I think it's safe to say she won't be riding again, but she can at least say she did it once. The picture didn't do her terror justice, so this is all you get. LOL

We checked out the gift shop for a moment...

27345598069_b56011f733_c.jpg

...but I wanted to see some of Sunset Season Greetings and Jingle Bell Jingle Bam! So, we really needed to get moving. Kendall also needed to exchange her BB8 bubble blower. After just a few hours, it was leaking soap solution and wouldn't turn off. So, we decided to split up. David took Kendall and I took Sam. So, we got in a little bit of the stuff on Sunset.

It was really pretty, but the "snoap" was coming down in big chunks in some spots. Sam got some in her eyes and was done with it.

So, we headed towards the Chinese theater to try and find a spot. It was so late and so crowded that we just had to settle. This was not how I'd planned this all out, but the wait at ToT had us so far behind. We saw a little bit of the projection show leading into things...

Now just waiting for Jingle Bell Jingle Bam! I could never really get a good position, so the pictures for this and Jingle Bell Jingle Bam! are not the greatest. Sam was at least a good sport.

(pretty cool how the snow looks in the lasers)

39123182671_3d4e8b12c7_c.jpg

So, we at least got to see a lot of the projections and lasers, but not much in the way of the fireworks.

We had a 7:15pm ADR at Brown Derby, so we decided to head that way so David and K could meet up with us. My parents would also be joining us. They spent the day in MK with my brother's family and this was just too late for their kids, so it would just be the 6 of us again.

39091850132_bff147fb01_c.jpg

My parents were the first to arrive. We had no idea they were also in the park early to watch Jingle Bell Jingle Bam! They couldn't see the projections very well, but they were off to the side and apparently had a great view of the fireworks. David and Kendall showed up shortly after with a new BB8. They also got to ride Star Tours again while they were over there. So, it seems Sam and I were the ones that didn't choose wisely. Oh well...I went to check in and took some pics as I waited in the check in line.

25256361908_1986fc07dd_c.jpg

When I got to the front, it was about 7:05pm and I was informed that that they were running a bit behind...like 20 minutes. I was hoping to see the Star Wars fireworks since we missed them in 2016 due to severe weather. The odds of us seeing them this time were starting to fade. I mean, I knew I was cutting it close and I know ADRs can run late, but you never know. On the plus side, I had some fun talking to the CMs up front. The one was losing her voice, but was kind enough to explain to me that the pics framed in gold are the originals from the original Brown Derby (didn't remember hearing that on any of our previous visits). The other CM was being silly and was showing me her self portrait right behind the check in stand.

38413237544_5eefe2fe03_c.jpg

So, I went back out and we waited...waited...and waited some more. I even took a pic of a light...shocking, I know.

25256357168_89c9d0abf7_c.jpg

David and the girls were people watching at the end of the entrance area and my mom and I had struck up a conversation with a couple who were going to try California Grill on the following night for the first time. We were well past that 20 min overage, so I went back in to check and was told just a little bit longer. All in all, we were seated about an hour past our ADR time...and we were STARVING!

The rolls were a bit too hard for my own preferences, but the butter with smoked salt and thyme was nice. And really...we were so darn hungry, we just didn't care.

Our cocktails arrived pretty quickly. David had a sidecar and I had the grapefruit martini (dad did as well).

He said his was on par with the legendary sidecar he got at Yachtsman. Mine was just OK. I normally really like grapefruit, but it was just not working for me tonight.

Love this phenomenal derby light.

We weren't really in love with enough of the appetizers to make it a whole table thing, so we decided to skip appetizers in place of desserts this evening. We also had a really hard time selling Samantha on the menu. She's at a stage where she really likes a lot of the adult menu food, but needs explanations beyond the menu on what she's ordering. And by explanation...I mean trying my hardest not to curse up a storm and start screaming like a crazy lady as I try to convince her it's what I'm describing. Kendall was easy...my mom was ordering the Cobb, and our server informed K he was willing to swap goat cheese and parm for the blue cheese...so she was golden.

I never took a pic of the salads, but my dad and I had the duck, David had the pork- which he shared with Samantha, and Samantha had the beef carpaccio.

39123121601_2064c841d7_c.jpg

The beef and the pork got raves, but my dad and I agreed that the duck was just OK.

Oh, I also got a drink that sounded a little more me. It didn't occur to me that the Hollywood Lights drink would have a glow cube. I wasn't in the mood to be that person with the flashing drink, but the cube would replace the one from our 2013 trip that some stupid kid stole from me (used it in our Halloween decor to light up a jack o lantern) and it tasted a lot better than my first drink.

27345361449_f982a47ab2_c.jpg

It was also around this time that Star Wars fireworks started to go off. On top of the long wait to be seated, things were slow to come out of the kitchen. Yeah...so mark another trip where we wouldn't be seeing Star Wars fireworks.

Dessert ordering was kind of ridiculous since we had to come up with this sharing plan and whatever person shared with Kendall had to stick to things she could eat. The desserts were just OK...even the grapefruit cake...which I remember liking in the past. I really must not have been in a grapefruit mood that night.

Ultimately, it was a good meal, but not a great meal. I also am still pretty bothered about the time it all took. I knew we'd be cutting it close for fireworks, but I also don't book a 7:15pm meal thinking I'm going to finish up just before 10. That's kind absurd!

And it was also time to head out of HS. It was just before 10pm and the last boat to the resorts would be leaving at 10. We were moving really fast so my pics become more and more blurry. I also think that's the holiday tag at the end of Illuminations going off in the background...I think.

Like I said...lots of blurry pics since we were rushing.

No pics of it, but we saw the last boat...and it was full. So, we made a mad dash for nothing. Everyone else was having to walk or find some other means of transportation. So, this meant we were walking back to the Swan. I guess at least my feet and knees had plenty of time to rest with the wait for a table and the long meal, so I was doing OK for the walk back. The kids were bouncing off the wall from the sugar in the desserts. I took a couple of pics of the Walt quotes dotting the construction area for the Skyliner, but I was really just done.

We headed back to our rooms and went to bed since we had an early morning ahead of us. AK was having morning EMH and it was our only AK day, so we were hoping to make the most of it.

Oh yea...the room! Housekeeping NEVER came! Had this happened midway through our trip, it probably wouldn't have been as big of a deal, but we had a lot of trash leftover from the road trip. So, we had overflowing trash cans. David also still relies on hotel toiletries, so there wasn't a lot of shampoo left for another night of showering. I tried to call the front desk, but the phone in the room was was dead! So, I called on my cell phone and wound up in some central phone queue that had to be rerouted. She kept wanting to confirm that we didn't have our Do Not Disturb sign on the door and kept reconfirming that we hadn't opted for green cleaning. It's approaching 11pm and I'm tired. David was able to make due with what we had and what I brought for me and the girls, so I just asked that she make sure to note that we were skipped and require cleaning. She also confirmed that the majority of the Swan's phones were down. Great. Not like I use the hotel phone very often, but you kind of expect it to work when you need it.

Coming Up...December 18th- AK Day

On my last trip we stayed in All Star Music and while housekeeping visited our room every day, but never took the trash which I thought was very odd. We had one in diapers at the time and it got gross fast and I ended up having to make frequent trips to the outside trash can. Sorry for your lack of service I’m sure it took away from the ease of being on vacation.
