Trip Report That time I bought a WDW AP even though I live 8091 miles from the parks (completed)!

Hi all, I’m a couple of weeks back from a trip where I spent a few days in Disneyland and Las Vegas followed by two weeks in WDW. I took good trip notes for the first few days but by the time I arrived at WDW I had stopped and so will have to rely on photos to remind me of what I did when, allowing for some discrepancies as my phone and camera seem to exist in different time zones.

Who – Renee from Auckland, New Zealand which Dr Google tells me is 8091 miles away from Orlando.

When – 21st of November until 11th of December.

Where – Park Vue Inn at Disneyland, The Venetian in Las Vegas and Pop Century, French Quarter and the Animal Kingdom Lodge at WDW.

Why – Because I wanted to, what other reason is needed!!

I was more stressed about this holiday than I normally am. I had surgery in July with 6 weeks off work, closely followed by an awful stomach bug and then a cold which hung around for two months and which I only recovered from a week before I left. All this meant that I hadn’t slept well in months, was very stressed and had been especially inactive so was worried about how I would cope with three weeks of solid walking. I was also worried I would get another cold which I often do when I travel. So, will this trip report consist of photos of me sitting in my hotel room nursing sore feet and coughing up phlegm or photos of fun theme park activities? You will have to come along for the ride to find out!!

Here is a photo of the Annual Pass from the title. I realise in this Instagram age that I should have taken a photo of this in front of some iconic structure like Cinderella Castle or Spaceship Earth and not in front of the curtains in the Pop Century value resort but I am still learning!

Travel
I had the day of my flight off work which was gave me a chance to sleep in and pack at a relaxed pace. I wanted to leave plenty of room for the new Starbucks mugs from each of the parks as well as some Christmas ornaments but I also didn’t want to do any washing while I was away. I hoped I had achieved the perfect balance of packing everything I own while leaving lots of room for souvenirs.

I spent as much of the day as I could playing with my lovely little dog Sookie who had known something was up ever since I dragged the suitcases out. This is a picture of my favourite dog on my favourite friend’s lap!
_DSC7354.JPG

As usual I would miss her a lot and was reminded of her every time I saw a “service dog” in the park.

The first Uber I ordered to take me to the airport arrived after only a couple of minutes but parked himself in the middle of the road outside my house and yelled out that he can’t take me to the airport as he’s been banned from there. Umm, maybe don’t accept my ride then and also don’t park in the middle of the street to yell at me so that cars have to swerve around you, honking their horns and giving me the evil eye out their car window as though it was my fault. The next driver got me to the airport OK but was kind of creepy and persistently asked questions like will your husband miss you, where is your husband, are you married, so your boyfriend will miss you then wont he, who are you travelling with etc etc. Thankfully the drive is not that long but thanks for the weird trip to the airport Uber drivers of Auckland.

I relaxed before the flight with some chips and rose, the start of three solid weeks of poor dietary choices!
IMG_6420.JPG

My father is retired airline staff and I was flying on his staff benefits. I had applied and paid for an upgrade to business class but had to wait until I got to the gate to see if I was upgraded or not. I had all my legs and fingers crossed as there is nothing better than a lie-flat seat on a long-haul overnight flight. Sadly, business class was full but I did get a seat in an almost empty premium economy cabin. This is very comfortable relative to economy and which also meant I would get back most of the money I had paid. My row was empty but because the armrests were fixed I couldn’t utilise the space and lie down.
UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_30f5.jpg

My appetiser and dessert. The main course was delivered a little while later. (In NZ we call what you call appetizers entrees and what you call entrees are called mains and what you call desserts we call desserts!)
IMG_6424.JPG

It was a pretty good flight, lots of leg-room, comfortable seat, great service and food but as per usual I only got at most an hour or two of sleep.

Once at LAX I got through security and picked up my bags quickly and with no issues. I caught the Disneyland Express and headed to the Park Vue Inn. I really hoped they would have an early room for me as I wanted to shower and lay down for a while but they didn’t so I had to freshen up and change in the lobby bathroom and then headed to Disneyland.

I had my first fastpass in this ominous looking home.

IMG_0612 2 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

The ride was actually a bit scary for me. So many people kept piling into the hallway that we were on quite intimate acquaintance with each other.

IMG_0615 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

This level of crowdedness makes me anxious but I can put up with it for the haunted mansion. Once I am on the doom buggy it is all worth it, especially as Disneyland has the nightmare overlay at the time of year that I usually travel, so this was my first ride of the “real” Haunted Mansion in two years.

For trip reporting purposes does anyone else wish that MDE retained a copy of the fastpasses that you used on each day? This would really help fill in a large gap in my day’s activities. The next photographic clue to my whereabouts on this day shows me watching the Festival of Fantasy Parade in Fronteirland. I remember that I got a seat on a wooden planter thing and fully expected someone to stand up in front of me and I didn’t care, I just wanted to sit down. Happily nobody did and I had a great, seated view of the parade.

This clearly sick child who was lying under a polar fleece blanket in the middle of a really hot day was sweaty and pale. At one point he groaned and tried to sit up and his mother told him to roll over and face the other way. I get not wanting to ruin the day of his not sick siblings by missing the parade, but I really think this kid needed to be in a bed and not lying on the hard ground, both for his sake and for those who might catch whatever was ailing him. Then again I’m not a mother or a doctor so what do I know!

I love how much detail there is on this float. Look at the dancing elephants, roller coaster, and all the little people on the swinger ride. It’s just beautiful.

Friday 24th November

This morning I caught a Lux Bus to Las Vegas from the bus stop outside the Park Place Inn, only a few steps from my motel. I would recommend the bus to anyone travelling from Anaheim to Las Vegas, although it takes around 4 hours and flying is only one hour, by the time you get to the airport, go through security and wait around in the time difference isn’t that great. The cost is about the same, however the bus is more scenic and you get to keep your shoes on. There were a couple of movies and free waters, soda and snacks.

A lot of the “scenery” consists of the unimpressive outskirts of the greater LA area but there are some attractive desert areas as well.

drive to Las Vegas by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

IMG_0338 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

There was a lot of truck traffic.

IMG_0340 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

This was the first casino we came to.

IMG_0345 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

There were are large number of new/incomplete housing developments on the outskirts of Las Vegas.I would love to live in a house where I could see the desert.

IMG_0347 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

The drop off point for the Lux Bus was in the basement of the Harrahs casino and the check in area of the Venetian was just across a drive-way. I had booked through Orbitz and my reservation included a $150 food and beverage credit. I was worried there might be some issue arranging this in person but the check-in was quick and painless.

This was my room which cost approx. $200 a night, about the price of a moderate resort. There are cheaper (and much more expensive) rooms on the strip but I especially wanted to stay at the Venetian. There was a resort fee of approx. $40 but all the hotels have fees of around this amount and the food and beverage credit compensated for this. I think the room was amazing for the price. A very comfortable bed, a separate seating area. Three TVs (one of them in the bathroom) with a very nice bathroom with a separate walk in shower. All of the fittings were in good shape and seemed of good quality, I was very pleased.

I have always wanted to stay in the Venetion. Maybe someday. Your pictures are awesome. Thanks for sharing.

Aw...that poor kid. He looks really ill. That photo is really distressing. :(

I can't stand the rugby scrum to get onto the Doom Buggy at HM. I am always tempted to ask the person on top of me if we should consider getting a hotel room. I don't like people I don't know being that close to me. LOL

As a parent ( and a member of the human race ) I support your thinking that the child should have been back at the hotel getting well

Just remember that you need a licence to drive, hunt , fish, boat, and have a pet but any two idiots can become parents

Max
Yes, I suppose an idiot doesn't become a great person just because they have a child. They're just an idiot with a child.

Thank you very much. I hope you get stay at the Venetian one day, it was lovely and pretty good value for money compared to what we are used to at Disney.
Fixed that for ya, and i agree.
Good point!

I like the rugby reference!!;) I hate being crowded in like that it is unpleasant and unsafe. I would rather just wait longer for the attraction and not be herded like cattle.

After the parade I just looked around for a while. I think Splash was down today as I can remember worrying that it wouldn’t be down for my whole trip.

IMG_0682 2 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I was very hot and dehydrated so I grabbed a strawberry ice block and sat on a bench by the Rivers of America near this reassuring sign.

IMG_0691 2 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

It was a nice quiet spot in a very busy park (maybe the sensible people were avoiding the snakes and alligators).

IMG_0688 2 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

Based on my photos I watched the very end of the Muppets show, rode the haunted mansion again, watched the castle show from a weird angle and took photos of chipmunks.

IMG_0732 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I had a very good day first day in the park, I don’t remember what I rode as I only have photos of the Haunted Mansion but I know there were other rides. The main highlight of my day was the parade which for some reason I never took the time to see in full in 2015. I have seen bits of it online quite a few times but some floats like the magnificent dragon are so much more impressive up close and in person.

Today I was heading to the Animal Kingdom and was stupidly excited to be seeing Pandora for the first time. I had a fastpasses for Navi River Journey, Kilamanjaro Safaris and Dinosaur. I woke up late again as I had early lunch booked at Tiffins and my fastpasses were booked for afterwards.

Tree of Life looking magnificent.

IMG_0735 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I sat down on a bench to look at a map to find the restaurant and suddenly found myself in the midst of this bird show.

IMG_0747 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I found the restaurant and then used some time before my reservation to cross the bridge and get my first look at Pandora. I love the sound effects as you head from earth into an alien environment.

This photo has lots of water splotches but I like it anyway as it reminds me of how it felt to be standing there in the heat totally dumbstruck at how beautiful and majestic it all was and excited that I had a whole new land to explore. I just felt so blessed and lucky that I have the means and ability to travel half way around the world to see this awesome sight.

IMG_0748 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

It had been hard avoiding spoilers for half a year, I had been so tempted to watch you tube clips and look at all of the photos by people like @fractal and @sheriffwoody but I was so glad that I didn't.

I loved these seashell creatures that spurt water at you! Isn’t it nice that bright and talented people made this for our enjoyment? (for our money too, but also for our enjoyment!).

IMG_0750 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I had to leave my exploring for a while as it was time to head to Tiffins. This was the meal I was most excited for in my whole trip. I had been worried that by the time I came on my trip the menu would have been heavily altered and it would be a chicken nugget warehouse, but my worries were unfounded.

I was seated at a two top table near a table that was obviously set up for a large party which made me a bit worried, but the CMs moved the table further away from me and the large party didn’t arrive until I was nearly done with my mean anyway. They seemed to be some type of management CMs (are they still called CMs??). I scanned for Joe Rohde or Bob Iger, the only people whose faces I would recognise, but they definitely weren’t there.

I was doing the Rivers of Light dining package which comes with three courses and a non-alcoholic drink. I also got a cocktail called Jenns Tattoo which was lovely and refreshing. I loved the glasses that it and the water were served in.

IMG_0757 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I chose soup for my entrée, it was thai style with shrimp, sour and coconut flavours. It was wonderful.

IMG_0759 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

My main was the wagyu strip loin and house smoked brisket. For some reason I decided to make the spring onion the focus of my photo! I found the brisket a bit dry but very flavourful. The strip loin was melt in the mouth amazing.

IMG_0762 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

The passionfruit tapioca crème was light and just the perfect amount of sweet and tart. It could have done without the chocolate crumbs on top and I scraped them off.

IMG_0765 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

This was an amazing meal that lived up to my high expectations. The ROL dining package was a good value compared to just paying for each thing separately.

I headed back to Pandora for more exploring. Get ready for a barrage of photos.

I don't know if this is supposed to be a plant or an alien but it is cool either way.

I'm not sure these mountains actually look like they are floating but are cool anyway.

Authentic Pandoran wildlife.

IMG_0787 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

More pod things. I saw on the Trackers that these are supposed to cleanse the air so that we earthlings can breathe in the land.

IMG_0792 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

This is spectacular and I also love how well they integrated the pandoran and earth made plant life.

There was a drum show going on.

IMG_0807 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I saw bits of the show at other times as well but this combo was by far the most energetic and fun.

Some photos from the Navi River Journey line.

IMG_0784 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

A light fitting shot a la @Doc Disney.

IMG_0781 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

A cool queue barrier post.

IMG_0786 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I like the river ride more than the average person seems to. I agree that it is too short, I would like more animatronics and few screen effects but it added up to more than the sum of its parts for me. I liked that it was just a meandering journey with no real story, I just wanted it to last for longer.

I looked in the shop. I really wanted to buy something but couldn’t find anything that suited. I wanted some of the Pandora tourist posters that I’m sure they had in the early days, but they didn’t have anything like that. The shoulder banshees are cool but not really what a middle aged, solo, female traveller really wants to spend her money on.

IMG_0821 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

A very realistic Navi bust. I don’t know what we are supposed to make of this. We are supposedly respectful tourists on the Navi planet many years after our war with them is over, so why is there a dismembered Navi in our gift shop?

IMG_0822 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

Loved this little creature.

IMG_0823 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I bought some skewered gummi bugs which I ate when I got home and were actually very nice, but I went into the shop ready and wanting to spend good money and only ended up spending a few dollars on lollies.

Wow -What a voyage! Really love your photos! You have a great eye for composition.

Looks like your squeezed a lot out of Disneyland and California Adventure

For the money, room at Venetian is amazing!

I know how you feel about taking photos of the Castle in WDW - can't seem to get enough.

Why would the have that sick kid out in the heat like that? I just don't get people sometimes.

All aboard the ride! Would love to do a reverse trip and end up in New Zealand! Never been there but near the top of my list.

Also - my dog Prince looks very much like yours. A yorkie-poo?

Thank you Fractal. I hope you do make it to NZ one day, I would like to see my country through your camera lens! My dog is a 2nd generation spoodle, part spaniel and part poodle. I think she has more of the poodle characteristics.

Once airside I grabbed some coffee (not Starbucks- I never saw a Starbucks without a huge line anywhere) and I tried my first Krispy Kreme donuts which were just OK. NZ’s first Krispy Kreme store will open this year (2018) but I will stick with Dunkin Donuts for my future chain store donut needs. This is a gratuitous internet photo of a typical NZ style doughnut.

I'm not a fan of Krispy Kreme either but I will say if you are near a KK location when the sign is illuminated that means they have fresh right out of oven donuts and you should give it another try. While a KK donut is no big deal when it has been sitting around for a few hours a fresh one is nearly a religious experience.

I'll also say your pictures are great and I may or may not have spent some time on The Venetian's website last night getting a idea of what a trip out that way would cost me.

Don't sell yourself short!! They are excellent!!

Since I last left off my trip report I have had a rather horrible couple of weeks involving surgery and it's associated unpleasantness but I am starting to feel ready to start reliving a far more fun time through this trip report.

I had been spending a lot of time in Pandora but eventually I remembered that the rest of the Animal Kingdom still existed and headed towards Africa.

After riding Dinosaur I went to the nomad lounge and had a drink. I don’t remember what it tasted like but I picked it because I wanted the lotus light!

Once it was dark enough I headed towards Pandora again to check it out at night. I thought it was stunning and walked around for ages just taking it in and taking photos. Not many photos were usable as I just had a point and shoot camera which isn’t very good at night but here are some shots of the lovely glowing pavement and plants.

I also had a meal at Satuli Canteen. I tried the cheeseburger pods and blueberry cheesecake. I agree with whoever said that these taste just like a McDonalds cheeseburger. I thought they were good even though they weren't hot enough. The blueberry cheesecake was delicous, my favourite dessert of the trip.

While I ate and elderly Vietnam vet sat down at my table while he waited for his friend. Once he discovered I was a New Zealander we talked for a while about his interactions with the New Zealand armed forces in Vietnam and about the current (woeful) state of the New Zealand airforce. Very random!

I'm a little late to the party, but.... Vegas AND Disney World?! It's like a dream come true! I'm a big fan of The Wynn in Vegas, but that room at The Venetian looks pretty wonderful. Really enjoying your report - your photos are great! Currently drooling over your cheeseburger pod pic... yum.
