Trip Report That time I bought a WDW AP even though I live 8091 miles from the parks (completed)!

Hi all, I’m a couple of weeks back from a trip where I spent a few days in Disneyland and Las Vegas followed by two weeks in WDW. I took good trip notes for the first few days but by the time I arrived at WDW I had stopped and so will have to rely on photos to remind me of what I did when, allowing for some discrepancies as my phone and camera seem to exist in different time zones.

Who – Renee from Auckland, New Zealand which Dr Google tells me is 8091 miles away from Orlando.

When – 21st of November until 11th of December.

Where – Park Vue Inn at Disneyland, The Venetian in Las Vegas and Pop Century, French Quarter and the Animal Kingdom Lodge at WDW.

Why – Because I wanted to, what other reason is needed!!

I was more stressed about this holiday than I normally am. I had surgery in July with 6 weeks off work, closely followed by an awful stomach bug and then a cold which hung around for two months and which I only recovered from a week before I left. All this meant that I hadn’t slept well in months, was very stressed and had been especially inactive so was worried about how I would cope with three weeks of solid walking. I was also worried I would get another cold which I often do when I travel. So, will this trip report consist of photos of me sitting in my hotel room nursing sore feet and coughing up phlegm or photos of fun theme park activities? You will have to come along for the ride to find out!!

Here is a photo of the Annual Pass from the title. I realise in this Instagram age that I should have taken a photo of this in front of some iconic structure like Cinderella Castle or Spaceship Earth and not in front of the curtains in the Pop Century value resort but I am still learning!

Travel
I had the day of my flight off work which was gave me a chance to sleep in and pack at a relaxed pace. I wanted to leave plenty of room for the new Starbucks mugs from each of the parks as well as some Christmas ornaments but I also didn’t want to do any washing while I was away. I hoped I had achieved the perfect balance of packing everything I own while leaving lots of room for souvenirs.

I spent as much of the day as I could playing with my lovely little dog Sookie who had known something was up ever since I dragged the suitcases out. This is a picture of my favourite dog on my favourite friend’s lap!
_DSC7354.JPG

As usual I would miss her a lot and was reminded of her every time I saw a “service dog” in the park.

The first Uber I ordered to take me to the airport arrived after only a couple of minutes but parked himself in the middle of the road outside my house and yelled out that he can’t take me to the airport as he’s been banned from there. Umm, maybe don’t accept my ride then and also don’t park in the middle of the street to yell at me so that cars have to swerve around you, honking their horns and giving me the evil eye out their car window as though it was my fault. The next driver got me to the airport OK but was kind of creepy and persistently asked questions like will your husband miss you, where is your husband, are you married, so your boyfriend will miss you then wont he, who are you travelling with etc etc. Thankfully the drive is not that long but thanks for the weird trip to the airport Uber drivers of Auckland.

I relaxed before the flight with some chips and rose, the start of three solid weeks of poor dietary choices!

My father is retired airline staff and I was flying on his staff benefits. I had applied and paid for an upgrade to business class but had to wait until I got to the gate to see if I was upgraded or not. I had all my legs and fingers crossed as there is nothing better than a lie-flat seat on a long-haul overnight flight. Sadly, business class was full but I did get a seat in an almost empty premium economy cabin. This is very comfortable relative to economy and which also meant I would get back most of the money I had paid. My row was empty but because the armrests were fixed I couldn’t utilise the space and lie down.
UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_30f5.jpg

My appetiser and dessert. The main course was delivered a little while later. (In NZ we call what you call appetizers entrees and what you call entrees are called mains and what you call desserts we call desserts!)
IMG_6424.JPG

It was a pretty good flight, lots of leg-room, comfortable seat, great service and food but as per usual I only got at most an hour or two of sleep.

Once at LAX I got through security and picked up my bags quickly and with no issues. I caught the Disneyland Express and headed to the Park Vue Inn. I really hoped they would have an early room for me as I wanted to shower and lay down for a while but they didn’t so I had to freshen up and change in the lobby bathroom and then headed to Disneyland.

I started the day off in the Magic Kingdom again. The Main Street Philharmonic were entertaining and talented. You can see it was a bit overcast today but it was still nice and warm.

IMG_0512 2 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I headed towards the castle as I could see that it was open and that people were walking through it.

These mosaics are just stunning, one of the most beautiful sights in the Magic Kingdom.

I used my fastpass for the Mine Train. Another great ride.

PhotoPass_Visiting_MK_8137629242.jpeg

Then I did the Haunted Mansion again. I ended up stopped in front of the caretaker and his frightened dog.

IMG_0534 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

After this I had some lunch at Columbia Harbor House. I did mobile ordering and had a very short wait. I sat so I could see the Haunted Mansion.

IMG_0545 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I had chicken nuggets which were nice but a bit dry.

IMG_0547 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

After lunch I did Small World.

IMG_0552 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

Either there were two Renees around or else they really wanted me to get off the ride.

IMG_0563 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I then rode Buzz. This was the best photo in my photopass shots, unfortunately it is not of me!

Next I hopped on a monorail and headed to Epcot. I think this was my first WDW monorail ride ever (I may have ridden in my 2001 trip but I can't remember for sure).

IMG_0568 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

The Christmas topiaries were very cute.

Pluto looks so happy to see the monorail.

Stitch is causing mayhem with the Christmas lights.

From mayhem to innocence.

While there I rode Spaceship Earth and I’m not sure what else (this happens when you takes months to finish your report).

At some stage I headed back from Epcot to the Magic Kingdom for the Happily Ever After dessert party. I thought I was early but as soon as I lined up they started letting people into the area to eat. As I had pre-paid for this party so long ago I felt as though I was getting to eat for free!

IMG_0596 3 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I thought the desserts were better than I expected. I really liked the strawberries, they were better than the ones from Amorettes that cost $2 each. I also liked the strawberry tart and pineapple and cream parfait. I got a 2nd plate of some of my favourites as well as some coffee and juice.

IMG_0601 2 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

At some point I made my way outside to the viewing area. It was a very comfortable and pleasant environment in the viewing area with plenty of room for people to sit and spread out a bit. As the show began the people at the front of the viewing area stood up, causing more people to stand up. The group next to me was saying “don’t do it, don’t do it, oh no they did it”. I was disappointed as well as I thought that one of the things we had paid for was the ability to spread out and watch the show in comfort. I stayed sitting down as I could still see the fireworks well, but I didn’t get as good a look at the projections as I had hoped. Despite that the show was amazing and I really enjoyed it. I only took a few photos as I wanted to concentrate on watching.

IMG_0608 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I won’t pay for the party again as even though the desserts were nice I didn’t get what I thought I was going to get, which was an excellent, seated view. Having seen @krauses photos from the train station I think that next time I want to watch the show I will try and stake out a position up there.

After the fireworks were over there was a message telling people not to leave and to stay and enjoy the park but thankfully people ignored this and started leaving. I stayed in the same general area waiting for the post fireworks show.

IMG_0654 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

At some point I headed to Adventureland to ride the Jungle Cruise. I really enjoy this ride at night, it is far more atmospheric and was nice and cool.

IMG_6683 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

After this I rode Pirates and then rode the Haunted Mansion until the park closed. It is so much more relaxing to ride the mansion at night, not only is there a minimal wait but you are not jammed into the stretching room and hallways like cattle.

IMG_0665 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

IMG_0666 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

On one of my rides my dream Haunted Mansion scenario happened and there was a ride stoppage while I was in front of the ballroom (I normally get stopped in front of some random black wall).

IMG_0671 3 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

Once the park closed I slowly made my way out taking some photos.

IMG_0676 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

It is so lovely being in the park at night when it is quiet!

Tuesday the 5th of December
I best get on with my trip report before Christmas rolls around again!

Today my plan was to head to Epcot for the afternoon and evening and focus on the World Showcase. Whereas yesterday I had been racing around from attraction to attraction like an energiser bunny, today I was sluggish and my legs felt like I was wading through mud. I was suffering from a full-on post dessert party sugar crash.

According to my photographic record I rode Living with the Land. I thought the Christmas decorations were cute.

IMG_0700 2 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

IMG_0702 4 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

IMG_0704 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

IMG_0705 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I'll admit to not really getting the gardening section of this ride the way many people seem to but I really like the beginning of the ride, especially the dinosaurs, and I'll happily ride on a slow boat past almost anything!

I also rode Gran Fiesta a couple of times in a row. This is a ride I do love and I don't get why there is hardly ever a line for it. There were two young girls (looked around 8 and 5) on my boat both times riding by themselves. They were very quiet and well behaved and seemed visibly proud to be riding by themselves, with the older one taking the younger one under her wing.

IMG_0711 3 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

Because of my sluggish mood I wasn't really enjoying my look around the world showcase today. It was really busy, hot and all the Christmas food stalls had long lines. I ended up just getting some meatballs and water from the quick service in Norway.

IMG_6688 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I thought I would try and pep myself up with some alcohol which normally does the trick! I couldn't decide what type of margarita to get from the new stand in Mexico so I got the one that is a mix of three. It was a good drink but I think I would have been better picking something with more alcohol and less sugar!

IMG_0713 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I kept looking around the world showcase as I had a dinner reservation for Tokyo Dining at 8pm but I started to realise I wasn't feeling up to staying that late so I debated just leaving and wearing the $10 no show fee or going to the restaurant and seeing if they could seat me early. I picked the 2nd option and wish I hadn't.

This was my view from the table which was nice even when someone sat in the tabIe by the window.

IMG_0715 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

All the CMs were lovely as well. However, I paid $30 for a dried up, tasteless hunk of pork with a big pile of dressing-less cabbage and dried up rice. t was awful and would still have been poor value if I paid $5 for it, but because it was so expensive I felt like I had to eat the whole thing.

IMG_6690 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

This was probably partly my fault. The waitress asked how I wanted the pork cooked so I said well done. I have never in my life been asked how I want pork cooked - is this a new thing? I thought pork had to be cooked all the way through for food safety purposes but are people eating rare pork now? I suppose in an era where people eat laundry detergent nothing should shock me anymore! Anyway, this meal made me question how much I was spending on food and the wisdom of making so many ADRs. Next time I think I will only make a few and if I feel like a sit down meal on the other days then I will just see what is available.

Thankfully this was the last day of the trip where I felt sluggish and lethargic and I was back to my normal self the next day.

December the 6th.
Today I was checking out of French Quarter and into the Animal Kingdom Lodge so when I went for breakfast I had a last look around the resort.

IMG_0717 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

This is my attempt at a selfie with my favourite alligator and a good illustration of why I don’t usually take selfies.

IMG_0723 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

A better shot of Alligator Numero Uno.

IMG_0724 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I’m not actually sure whether this breakfast was from today or the day before, but I took a photo of it as I was impressed by how much food there was for a kids meal.

IMG_6691 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

After breakfast I headed back to the room to pack up. I struggled trying to get everything into my cases. Most of the extra room was taken up with the Starbucks mugs from each park and lots of new t-shirts. At this point I was really regretting wasting space on a winter jacket and jumpers, though in a few days I would be much happier with my decision. Once I had everything sorted bell services came for my bags and I bid a sad farewell to French Quarter and headed for Hollywood Studios.

I made it to Hollywood Studios with not much time to spare before my lunch reservation. I asked in a shop whether they sold single magic bandits to replace one that had fallen off my band the day before (a cute dopey in a mine cart) but they don’t do this. However I did pick up a free AP magnet (photo is from the internet).

download.jpeg

I wouldn’t recommend these magic bandits to anyone. They are cute but very expensive and they don’t grip onto the magic band with much strength meaning they fall out very easy.

Lunch was at the Sci-fi diner. There were some neat props in the waiting area which may or may not be related to my everyday life.

IMG_0728 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

Lunch was a burger and this alcoholic milkshake. This was nice but I couldn’t taste or feel the effects of any alcohol. The burger was OK, nothing memorable. I love the atmosphere of this place so much though that they could serve me a $30 dried up piece of pork and I would still want to go back there!

IMG_0733 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

Big boss with a robot.

IMG_0736 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

After lunch I checked out the Walt Disney display. Did the children of the past really find these toys cute? How were they not scared ….less by these things.

IMG_0741 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I’m really looking forward to this aliens ride even though it is the same ride as Maters in DCA, which I have never bothered to ride.

IMG_0747.jpg

I got my photo taken with baby Groot (very bad). Groot was adorable and very well done. The man playing Peter Quill was nothing like him in either looks or spirit and I wish I could have spent more time with baby Groot and less time with him (I don’t like meeting characters I have to talk to though).

IMG_0750 2 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

IMG_0748.JPG

There was a Coco preview playing and I enjoyed so much I watched it twice. After this I had a TSMM fastpass and then was lucky enough to ride again straight afterwards due to a fortuitous breakdown of another ride.

Now I understand why I never hear much buzz about Tokyo Dining, then again they might just have been having a bad day.

I continue to enjoy your photos! I did not know about those hidden Mickey's in SSE.

As far as "Enchanted Stories with Belle". We did it when our youngest was around 11. It's neat to see once but I have no desire to go again. If you are a big Beauty and the Beast fan I think it would be worthwhile for you.

I then paid another visit to the Hollywood Tower Hotel. It's a nice place but they keep having trouble with the elevators whenever I am there.

It's been a while since I updated my trip report as I've been too tired from work, but I now have four days off for Easter. Woohoo for public holidays!!!

I realised I forgot to tell a funny story about when I was in the Beauty and Beast show and a group of elderly ladies refused to move down their row even though the show was busy and they had been told by a CM to move repeatedly. They replied to the CM that they were not able to move as they couldn't handle sitting in the sun. This was late in the day with the sun on the wane and pleasant temperatures. The CM replied back that they had been in the sun all day what difference would a few minutes more make, and if they didn't move people would have to climb over them to get to the free space. They still refused to budge and a man behind me yelled out if they needed an emotional support animal to deal with their sun problems he had an emotional support chicken he could sell them. His wife told him to shush but I thought it was hilarious! The ladies sat stone faced for the whole show probably plotting their complaint against the CM, but I was pleased that she had tried to stand up to them.

When I last left off I was getting ready to leave Hollywood Studios and check-in at my new hotel the AKL. I headed to the buses and while waiting I saw a family group having a huge, swearing argument with each other that was centred on a couple who disagreed about what park they should go to next. They were pushing each other and yelling right in each others face. The family were trying to restrain them while also arguing with each other. Eventually the man and a some of the party stormed off and the lady continued screaming at her family. She was saying "I hate Epcot why cant we just go to the Magic Kingdom", "why do you never support me" etc etc. It was very dramatic and made me feel very content to be on a solo trip! Some security people arrived just as my bus also arrived.

This was the moment I got to join the very important #shirleystatus club: please observe my entirely empty bus from two angles!

IMG_0808 by Dis Sookie, on FlickrIMG_0809 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

When I arrived at AKL I was hugely excited to see the amazing lobby and huge Christmas tree. It really was beautiful.

IMG_0815 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

Some Christmas tree detail:

IMG_0811 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

IMG_0814 2 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

Although I really loved the lobby and all the common areas of the hotel I was really disappointed in my room. I found it small and dark and didn't feel it was any better than my room at French Quarter, while costing me a lot more money. The hallway smelt musty and there was a huge dirty patch on the carpet that never got cleaned, I found the quick service to be busy and unorganised and the bus trips felt long. I'm pleased that I have stayed here as it has always been at the top of my WDW hotels 'to do' list but it was my least favourite hotel so far and I won't stay there again.

What park to you go to the morning after checking in at the AKL?

Where else could you go?

IMG_0820 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I think Pandora looks beautiful even on a dull, overcast day.

After Pandora I headed to my safari via Starbucks where I waited over 20 minutes for my coffee while people who ordered after me came and went. I was getting quite frustrated because they clearly forgot my order but claimed someone else had taken it. Thankfully some caffeine calmed me down and I had another great safari. One good thing about being by yourself in the park is that you always get a seat near the window on the jeep (at least I always have!).

This Giraffe came really close to us and we had to wait for a while for him to move away before we could drive off.

This was the view from my room. It wasn't a bad view at all, in fact it was lovely but I was a little disappointed not to have lucked into any type of savannah view ( I know I didn't pay for one but I was hoping for it anyway!!).

Later on that day I headed to Disney Springs to have a look around and for a highly anticipated ADR at Homecomin.

I had to sit for a while as I waited for a table so I took some photos of the Christmas tree. This decoration is right up my alley!

This meal was amazing, I loved the chicken but the mashed potatoes were perhaps the best I have ever had. Even the pickles were nice. Homecomin has made it onto my "must do every trip" list.

I was really full after dinner but really wanted to try a dessert so I ordered the mockingbird cake. This is a very silly photo as it doesn't in any way show how HUGE the piece of cake was, it was at least a full quarter of a cake. Both the CM who brought the cake and my waiter looked at it and commented on it's hugeness.

This was the cake the next day and I ate it for breakfast for two days in a row.

December 8th

Today I went back to the Animal Kingdom.

I don't know what type of bird this is but it looks like a mutated flamingo.

I took a huge number of photos of the Tree of life today.

I had another reservation at Tiffins today. A few days before I had seriously questioned how money I was spending on food and as a result I booked lunch at Tiffins! I can't quite remember what my logic was but it made sense to me at the time.

I was seated in a different area this time but I found it just as lovely. Lunch was not quite as relaxing as my last meal as I was seated next to a 10 year old with ants in her pants but it was still very enjoyable. I ordered one of their lunch combos and it was quite a reasonable price.

My watermelon flavoured drink. I think this was non-alcoholic (me attempting to be thrifty) but it was nice anyway.

Lunch came with a sample platter as the appetiser. All the things on here were OK, but nothing stood out as special.

Pomegranate chicken on a bed of pap. This was great. The mother of the rambunctious child next to me ordered the expensive version of this dish from the main menu and while her plate was prettier, mine had at least as much food.

The trio of desserts was the highlight, each one was delicious and the servings were generous.

I saw d'vine on my way out of the park, my first time in person.

Back at the hotel I checked out the savannah again.

This giraffe looked like it was heading straight for the balcony of the people watching. It must have been very exciting to be in your room and to see a giraffe heading straight for you. At the last minute he put his head down to nibble on the grass.

In the evening I headed to Epcot for a few rides and to eat at one of the Christmas stalls for dinner.

I ended up not eating dinner at Epcot as the stalls were all too busy and then started closing. I thought about eating at the quick serve in the American pavilion but I had to choose between catching the last showing of the American Adventure for the evening or eating and I picked the attraction. I think I made the right choice, even as a foreigner I find it a high quality and stirring attraction.

After the American Adventure I headed out of Epcot and to the Boardwalk via a friendship boat. I made up for my lack of dinner by having ice cream at Ample Hills. I had strawberry and oatmeal lace in a cup and while both were good I really loved the strawberry. After my nutritious dinner I headed back to the hotel in an Uber.
