Trip Report That time I bought a WDW AP even though I live 8091 miles from the parks (completed)!

Hi all, I’m a couple of weeks back from a trip where I spent a few days in Disneyland and Las Vegas followed by two weeks in WDW. I took good trip notes for the first few days but by the time I arrived at WDW I had stopped and so will have to rely on photos to remind me of what I did when, allowing for some discrepancies as my phone and camera seem to exist in different time zones.

Who – Renee from Auckland, New Zealand which Dr Google tells me is 8091 miles away from Orlando.

When – 21st of November until 11th of December.

Where – Park Vue Inn at Disneyland, The Venetian in Las Vegas and Pop Century, French Quarter and the Animal Kingdom Lodge at WDW.

Why – Because I wanted to, what other reason is needed!!

I was more stressed about this holiday than I normally am. I had surgery in July with 6 weeks off work, closely followed by an awful stomach bug and then a cold which hung around for two months and which I only recovered from a week before I left. All this meant that I hadn’t slept well in months, was very stressed and had been especially inactive so was worried about how I would cope with three weeks of solid walking. I was also worried I would get another cold which I often do when I travel. So, will this trip report consist of photos of me sitting in my hotel room nursing sore feet and coughing up phlegm or photos of fun theme park activities? You will have to come along for the ride to find out!!

Here is a photo of the Annual Pass from the title. I realise in this Instagram age that I should have taken a photo of this in front of some iconic structure like Cinderella Castle or Spaceship Earth and not in front of the curtains in the Pop Century value resort but I am still learning!

Travel
I had the day of my flight off work which was gave me a chance to sleep in and pack at a relaxed pace. I wanted to leave plenty of room for the new Starbucks mugs from each of the parks as well as some Christmas ornaments but I also didn’t want to do any washing while I was away. I hoped I had achieved the perfect balance of packing everything I own while leaving lots of room for souvenirs.

I spent as much of the day as I could playing with my lovely little dog Sookie who had known something was up ever since I dragged the suitcases out. This is a picture of my favourite dog on my favourite friend’s lap!
_DSC7354.JPG

As usual I would miss her a lot and was reminded of her every time I saw a “service dog” in the park.

The first Uber I ordered to take me to the airport arrived after only a couple of minutes but parked himself in the middle of the road outside my house and yelled out that he can’t take me to the airport as he’s been banned from there. Umm, maybe don’t accept my ride then and also don’t park in the middle of the street to yell at me so that cars have to swerve around you, honking their horns and giving me the evil eye out their car window as though it was my fault. The next driver got me to the airport OK but was kind of creepy and persistently asked questions like will your husband miss you, where is your husband, are you married, so your boyfriend will miss you then wont he, who are you travelling with etc etc. Thankfully the drive is not that long but thanks for the weird trip to the airport Uber drivers of Auckland.

I relaxed before the flight with some chips and rose, the start of three solid weeks of poor dietary choices!

My father is retired airline staff and I was flying on his staff benefits. I had applied and paid for an upgrade to business class but had to wait until I got to the gate to see if I was upgraded or not. I had all my legs and fingers crossed as there is nothing better than a lie-flat seat on a long-haul overnight flight. Sadly, business class was full but I did get a seat in an almost empty premium economy cabin. This is very comfortable relative to economy and which also meant I would get back most of the money I had paid. My row was empty but because the armrests were fixed I couldn’t utilise the space and lie down.
UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_30f5.jpg

My appetiser and dessert. The main course was delivered a little while later. (In NZ we call what you call appetizers entrees and what you call entrees are called mains and what you call desserts we call desserts!)
IMG_6424.JPG

It was a pretty good flight, lots of leg-room, comfortable seat, great service and food but as per usual I only got at most an hour or two of sleep.

Once at LAX I got through security and picked up my bags quickly and with no issues. I caught the Disneyland Express and headed to the Park Vue Inn. I really hoped they would have an early room for me as I wanted to shower and lay down for a while but they didn’t so I had to freshen up and change in the lobby bathroom and then headed to Disneyland.

I hopped into a long line at Rancho del Zocalo for breakfast, a place I have never eaten at. After a while in the line a lady came over and said to everyone “this line is for American breakfasts only, if you want a Mexican breakfast come to this counter which has no line”. Suddenly a Mexican breakfast sounded like a very good idea. I had a fajita beef breakfast platter. This is what it looked like after I ate it!
IMG_6457.JPG

After breakfast I rode Big Thunder and then Splash Mountain. Splash was in bad shape with lots of unlit sections and missing and broken animatronics. It is a shame to see such a special ride so mistreated and I hope it gets a good rehab soonI like this ride photo, everyone else in the log is doing something cool and I just look horrified.

I rode the Mark Twain to check out the new ROA additions from river level. Princess Tiana came and waved to us while we waited to get on.

Love seeing the canoes on the river (not that you will ever find me in one).

I think the new river bank is just beautiful and once they have finished the Star Wars peaks in the back ground will be even better. You can still see the carpark from some areas but new tree growth will soon take care of that.

When I got off the boat it was blazing hot, very crowded and I still had 2.5 hours until my lunch reservation so I decided to go back to my room for a midday rest. I loved staying close enough to the gates that I could just decide to come and go whenever I wanted.

When I arrived at DCA later I shopped to kill time before my reservation. Donald Duck was deep in conversation with this CM. How cute is his outfit!

My lunch reservation was at Carthay Circle at around 2.30. I don’t normally mind eating by myself at Disney parks but I was worried that the restaurant might be busy and full of large family groups due to the holiday and I would stand out like a sore thumb. This wasn’t the case at all, the restaurant was quiet and had a mix of people just like normal. I got the World of Colour meal plan even though I had no intention of going to WOC because I thought it was a good deal (I did this at Tiffins as well).

This was the menu- I got the salad, Tri-tip (without the blue cheese) and pecan apple upside down cake with a Pimms punch. They were all were all good. The tri-tip didn’t live up to the perfection of my steak last year but I won’t hold that against it.

When I finished lunch the heat and people had disappeared from the day. I walked onto the little mermaid a couple of times then I saw the Toy Drummer show, this is great fun and not to be missed if you are in DCA for Christmas (I think this photo may be from another day, somehow everything has uploaded out of order).

I then watched Viva Navidad followed by Mostly Kosher (which was in Epcot this year as well).

Mostly Kosher by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

After this I had a dusk ride on RSR before heading back to the room to chill before going back to Disneyland late enough to miss most of the Fantasmic and fireworks crowds.

Main Street by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

Disneyland was in nightime spectacular mode when I got back so I had to take a very circutatious route to get to my Indiana Jones fastpass but it was easy to navigate. After this I hopped in line for Pirates which broke down while I was waiting but I had to choose between staying in line and hoping it would come back up or heading into paths crowded with people who had just finished watching Fantasmic. I gambled on Pirates and won, avoiding the crowded paths and getting a shorter wait as heaps of people left the line. Next I rode the Haunted Mansion and then grabbed a Mint Julep and settled in to enjoy the atmosphere.

I wondered why there were still people sitting by the RoA so I went over to check it out only to discover that Fantasmic was running twice tonight and was going to start very soon. So despite choosing to miss Fantasmic to avoid the crowds I accidentally found myself with a great uncrowded (if off centred) riverside spot for the show only a few minutes before it started. I enjoyed my unexpected showing of Fantasmic very much, especially seeing the Pirate Ship slowly emerging from the mist and all the characters on the Mark Twain. This was the first time I had seen it since 1997!

I feel like I did some Fantasyland rides after this and I definitely did Small World. Some final shots of Disneyland on my way out, it truly is heaven on earth on a Christmas season evening.

Thanks for sharing the dlr portion of this multi stage magical mystery tour

Great that you are able to see fantasmic
20 Year’s ago! Wow I am sure it seemed like a brand new event for you

Max
I can remember being sore from a day of touring while waiting for the show 20 years ago and as soon as the show started I forgot all about how sore I was. 20 years on the magical falling away of physical discomfort didn't happen but the show still blew me away. I should not wait another 20 years before seeing it again.

I agree on not waiting 20 Years
I do not need to see it every time but leaving it that long inbetween is not a good plan!!

I have never been to Vegas so I am looking forward to that portion of the trip

Friday 24th November

This morning I caught a Lux Bus to Las Vegas from the bus stop outside the Park Place Inn, only a few steps from my motel. I would recommend the bus to anyone travelling from Anaheim to Las Vegas, although it takes around 4 hours and flying is only one hour, by the time you get to the airport, go through security and wait around in the time difference isn’t that great. The cost is about the same, however the bus is more scenic and you get to keep your shoes on. There were a couple of movies and free waters, soda and snacks.

A lot of the “scenery” consists of the unimpressive outskirts of the greater LA area but there are some attractive desert areas as well.

There was a lot of truck traffic.

IMG_0340 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

This was the first casino we came to.

IMG_0345 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

There were are large number of new/incomplete housing developments on the outskirts of Las Vegas.I would love to live in a house where I could see the desert.

IMG_0347 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

The drop off point for the Lux Bus was in the basement of the Harrahs casino and the check in area of the Venetian was just across a drive-way. I had booked through Orbitz and my reservation included a $150 food and beverage credit. I was worried there might be some issue arranging this in person but the check-in was quick and painless.

This was my room which cost approx. $200 a night, about the price of a moderate resort. There are cheaper (and much more expensive) rooms on the strip but I especially wanted to stay at the Venetian. There was a resort fee of approx. $40 but all the hotels have fees of around this amount and the food and beverage credit compensated for this. I think the room was amazing for the price. A very comfortable bed, a separate seating area. Three TVs (one of them in the bathroom) with a very nice bathroom with a separate walk in shower. All of the fittings were in good shape and seemed of good quality, I was very pleased.

I slept in the next morning and had a room service breakfast. Food is always more exciting when it is delivered direct to your hotel room and you can eat it in your pyjamas. The omelette wasn’t the best sadly, it was overcooked and came with onions in it rather than the chopped tomato that I actually ordered but it was still a lot of fun.

I got a close up of my super cute condiments.

IMG_0374 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

This was the view from my room. If you look carefully you can spot the monorail.

IMG_0369 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

During the day I explored and played slots in some of the nearby hotels, shopped and fulfilled a longstanding aim to eat cheesecake at the Cheesecake Factory. I was not consistent at all with my photo taking.

There is an Atlantis themed show in Caesars Palace that I think runs every hour. It is worth waiting a few minutes for but nothing that will overly impress us Disney park fans.

IMG_0467 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

As a lover of Disney’s themed environments there is a lot to enjoy in Las Vegas’s themed hotels such as the Venetian, Paris and the Luxor. Unfortunately, they now seem to be moving away from building these large themed hotels and are building huge, sleek, modern towers such as below. These don’t appeal to me at all.

I caught the Bellagio fountain show from across the street. I loved this. The water shooting up higher than the hotel is spectacular to see.

I tried to be artsy and get an interesting effect with the car lights but I don’t have a good enough camera or a tripod.

If I ever get back to Vegas, the Venetian is where I want to stay. Loved the ambiance!

I really loved the ambiance, it was relatively calm considering it was on the strip and a bit "sophisticated" (at least to my common eyes) without being stuffy.

Enjoying your report! I wanted to stay at the Venetian when I went to Vegas this year, but we ended up at Planet Hollywood. I loved walking around The Venetian though.
Planet Hollywood looked fun and is so close to the Venetian. That whole area of the strip seems like the best place to stay to me.

Continuing on with my trip report I still had another day in Las Vegas after the one I last reported on which I am going to quickly skip through so I can finally get to Disneyworld! Essentially the next day was a repeat of the day before with more strip exploration, slot hopping and shopping.

The next day I had an early morning wake up to get to the airport for a 9.15 am flight. As soon as I was in line for security I saw people with Disney bags and a grandma asking her grandson what character he was most looking forward to seeing. Despite how much I enjoyed my time in Vegas I felt a sense of relief at being back with “my people”.

Once airside I grabbed some coffee (not Starbucks- I never saw a Starbucks without a huge line anywhere) and I tried my first Krispy Kreme donuts which were just OK. NZ’s first Krispy Kreme store will open this year (2018) but I will stick with Dunkin Donuts for my future chain store donut needs. This is a gratuitous internet photo of a typical NZ style doughnut.

I was flying southwest and chose an aisle seat in a row that already had someone in the window seat, hoping the middle would remain empty. Unfortunately, the flight was completely full so I tried as hard as possible to look friendly but not too friendly and totally not weird to try and attract a female to sit in the middle seat (males tend to spread out their legs and don’t make good seat mates). It worked and the flight was great. One of the stewards put on a bit of a comedy show (I can’t actually remember any of his jokes), there were frequent runs through the cabin with beverages and snacks and the 4 hours flew by.

After getting my bags I headed in the wrong direction for the magical express. After remembering the landmarks I should be passing from all of @Doc Disney 's trip reports I corrected course and got myself to the correct place. I had a 0 minute wait to leave after hopping on the very full bus with the driver taking off as soon as he had loaded my bags. I had a seat right in front behind the driver but it soon got dark and I didn't get a good look at the famous sign.
IMG_6518.JPG

Pop century was the second stop and I got checked in with no problems, I even remembered my pin number for the magic bands from two years ago. I had selected a room in one of the buildings with the new rooms and I got what I wanted and I selected to forgo housekeeping and got a $20 gift card for my three night stay.

I set off for my room with my bags and got stupidly lost walking well past my room. In fact I got turned around everytime I walked to my room except for my final day at the resort when I finally worked things out. My room was near a rubicks cube staircase and I kept walking up rubicks cube staircases that were not actually the one by my room.

The room was amazing (no photos for some reason, but most people have seen the new rooms by now). It was clean and fresh with a walk-in shower, lots of usb ports and plugs and a nice big TV. It was by far the best room I stayed in this trip (other resorts were French Quarter and Animal Kingdom) when considering the room alone and not the rest of the resort.

After room I headed and got some dinner as one can't survive on Southwest snacks alone. This was much tastier than I expected from a food court meal. I also had an ice cream sandwich. I ate a few of these on my trip until I realised each one was costing $5 and then I stopped. $5 is a lot for an ice cream treat I wouldn't be eating if it wasn't Mickey shaped.
IMG_0574 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

After a while I headed to the Magic Kingdom and traded in my 10 day park-hopper pass for an annual pass. I got the pass as I would be there for 14 days and my 10 day pass would leave me a bit short. It was a surprisingly happy moment and I'm glad I did it even though I may no longer be able to make it back for another trip. The savings on food and merchandise were great as well.

IMG_0575 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

The fireworks was going on as I arrived so I sat by the train station and watched for a while. This is a very bad shot but a nice memory of me sitting on a bench relaxed and knowing I had 14 days of magic ahead of me.
IMG_6521.JPG

After the fireworks I discovered that trying to walk up Main Street when thousands of people are walking in the opposite direction is not relaxing. I decided it might be easier to head through the shops but that was perhaps even busier but I eventually made it into the hub.

The castle is absolutely stunning and I found myself taking constant pictures of it even while telling myself "hey, you've taken this photo dozens of times already, is another shot really necessary". Somehow my answer would always be yes!

IMG_0587 2 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I don't really have a strong memory of what I did this evening on account of my poor note taking and out of order photos, but I must have ridden Pirates as I have this fabulous momento of my pirate cruise (I am in the back row).

IMG_6533 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I think I also rode the Little Mermaid and I remember trying to ride the peoplemover and it being closed. I was surprised by how busy it was, the queues were long and the pathways were teeming with people. It was extra magic hours and I thought it would be a lot quieter with only resort guests in the park.

I decided to leave at 11.30 to skip the crowds who I imagined would be leaving at midnight when the park closed. I headed to the buses into the worst transportation moment of the entire trip. The pop century bus lines were so long that they had overtaken another resorts space whereas all around me were small lines for all the other resorts. People were getting increasingly scratchy as we waited. Multiple buses were departing from other resort areas while no buses came for pop. At one point a bus came and dropped a few people off and then drove off and there was audible cursing. The father in the family behind me kept berating his wife that he had told her they should have driven. People were bad mouthing scooter people and their families as they were going onto the buses. It was a very unpleasant experience and soured me on Pop Century despite its many good qualities. All up I waited 50 minutes for the bus from the moment I thought to look at my watch to see how long the wait would be and it was after 1 am when I got back to my room.

Whenever I was at Magic Kingdom late at night again I always waited until well after park closing before leaving and spent time on Main Street looking at the shops and enjoying the atmosphere before heading to the buses. I never had a wait anything like this again, but I don't know if I just got unlucky that night or if my delayed leaving system was behind the low waits for the rest of the trip.

Glad you are back and continuing this report

Max
Thanks - I'm not sure how fast I'll be proceeding and it was a long trip but I'll get there in the end.

Loving this report! Can't wait to read more!
Thank you for following along, glad you like it!

Glad I could help! :joyfull:
Another thing was I changed a reservation from the brown derby to mama melrose while reading your report as I really liked the look of the steak (but sadly they weren't serving it during my visit ). You are a wealth of good information.

This morning I slept in (this would become an ongoing habit!) as I had a late breakfast at the Wave. I called an Uber and while I waited in the lobby for my driver and could see that his car was some distance from Pop he called to say that he was in the lobby looking for me and where was I. After a while I figured out that he was at the Art of Animation instead of Pop but he spoke very poor English and he probably wasn’t familiar with my accent so I couldn’t get through to him that he was at the wrong hotel. Eventually I just cancelled him and requested another driver who could not have been any nicer or more efficient.

I looked around the lobby while I waited for my reservation. I found this Gingerbread feature and the atmosphere of the Contemporary in general very underwhelming. I think this looks like cardboard.

IMG_0589 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

This mural was wonderful but seems crowded by a whole lot of stuff around it which reduces the impact it would have if it was given more room to breathe.

IMG_0591 2 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

IMG_0590 2 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I would like to eventually stay at all the hotels in WDW but this hotel is way down my list.

The Wave itself didn’t seem to have a lot of Disney atmosphere but the breakfast buffet was great, well priced and my waiter was amazing, even if he did wrongly guess that I was Australian rather than a New Zealander.

This was my first plate – there was a nice eggs benedict, sweet potato pancakes, bacon, salmon, potato casserole and more eggs. Everything was warm and tasty. I had a mimosa as if you cant drink alcohol for breakfast at Disneyworld then why even bother.

IMG_0594 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

This was my second plate. I really wanted to finish off the egg benedict but I was just too full to even make a dent. Hidden from view are a heap of blackberries which are fiendishly expensive to buy where I’m from. They were lovely.

IMG_0595 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

Out of focus behind the dregs of my mimosa is a vlogger vlogging. I eventually discovered that she is an English vlogger whose channel is called Disney in Detail.

IMG_0596 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I didn’t recognise her at the time but I could hear that she was English so when I got home I was looking up various combinations of English, British, vlogs, Disney, WDW etc etc trying to find her. Eventually I realised that since she had travelled from England she must have had a travel day so I looked up WDW and travel day and found her channel. I felt quite proud of my sleuthing skills. It may have been easier just to go up to her and say “hey you there, what’s the name of your vlog so I can like and subscribe” but that’s not really my style!

I paid for most of my meal with my "no housekeeping" gift voucher and my waiter gave me a small bottle of water to take away with me.

I walked from the Contemporary to the Magic Kingdom. I enjoyed the walk which was shorter than I expected it to be and the weather was beautiful, as it would continue to be for almost my entire holiday.

In the Emporium these old fashioned ladies and a fireman were entertaining a crowd with a version of the 12 days of Christmas song where people had to shout out household chores that they disliked such as cleaning the toilet and doing the dishes. They shouted out to a little boy for his suggestion and he said decorating the Christmas tree.

IMG_0603 by Dis Sookie, on Flickr

I really liked the look of this area and little bridge.
