DAY ONE (OF 13)

1597944764339.png

As project manager, I will be providing some basic guidelines towards what we should be focusing on each day. But these are just for guidelines, if we move beyond them that's all good! Here some questions I think we should strive to answer sooner rather than later:

Essential Questions:
  • How will the park be structured?
  • What lands should be included in the park?
  • What should the park's name be?
  • What should the general story of the park be (should we include the Jellicle Choice?)

Decided Information:
  • We have to make a cats park.
  • This part will get filled more as we progress.

Some of my initial thoughts:

  • How will the park be structured?

I like @goofyyukyukyuk17 's proposed linear network, but I think a few alternate routes here or there would be needed to keep the park flowing. Else there will be tons of bottlenecks as people are crowding forward when one person wants to move backward. But I do think it could be possible to move on one single linear route through the park and story.

Another weird thought, what if we made the park entirely indoors? The movie is set at night within the context of all the humans sleeping. It might be strange to be walking around during the day with no humans about.

  • What lands should be included in the park?

Just from my immediate recollection of the movie, I'm thinking:
  • The Main Street
  • The Cemetary
  • The Fat Cat's Mansion
  • The Garbage Alley
  • The Docks
  • The Railways
  • The Egyptian Theater
The home of the Tabby Cat and the home of the two stealing cats could also work, but I feel they'd make more sense as queues/attractions for rides based around them, rather than full-blown lands.

  • What should the park's name be?

My first thought was "Catsland" but that's pretty generic isn't it lol

  • What should the general story of the park be (should we include the Jellicle Choice?)

I think Grizabella's ascension would work best as some final "Fantasmic" style show at the end of the night. Have the whole day be leading up to who the Jellicle Choice will be.

Have we ever asked what would happen if we just didn't make the park themed around Cats 🤣?

I think the big questions now should be park structure and story... lands and name should follow semi-naturally (as natural as something related to that abomination can be).

Including the Jellicle Choice makes a ton of sense in my opinion... we're not trying to tell the story of the movie linearly, but having the choice happen at the end of the day, kind of like what Jokers suggested, provides that linearity of story to some degree. I think we're put into the place of the unnecessary character (as if any of the characters were necessary haha), Victoria, to basically learn about the Jellicles and how to "be" a cat.

I've thought about it being an indoor park, but that limits us in other ways (space, etc)... also I'm just not a big fan of indoor parks, but I understand why we might need to consider it as an option.

Yeah I think alternate routes would be necessary... but it comes down to are we wanting to tell the story of Cats or are we wanting to put guests in the story of cats? That's something that'll affect the structure and lands as well.

I'd agree that these are the options we need to be thinking about... if we wanted to expand the universe some, we could add an original area or two because I don't know that something like Garbage Alley is an appealing idea from the outside haha... again, just depends on our story.
My first thought was "Catsland" but that's pretty generic isn't it lol
Haha very generic, but that's okay... I'm sure after we have everything else figured out, we'll be able to come up with a name as ridiculous as a park themed to Cats.

Exactly, and whether we want that to be the extent of the linearity or not is another choice for us to make

We can definitely add some new areas. Even if we adapted everything from Cats into it's own ride I don't know if it'd be enough to fill out a park.

I'm a fan of making the Jellicle Choice at the end but leaving the rest of the park nonlinear, because theoretically, a guest can visit each cat's "exhibit" to why they should be made the Jellicle Choice in any order they'd like. By the end of the day, you would have visited most of the cats nominated and would be interested to see who wins. Sorta placing you into the role of a Cat watching the choice, keeping the inherent story without it becoming too linear.

I think that makes a lot of sense... guests aren’t really going to be missing out on understanding the story of they don’t see every land in a day, but there’s just more context involved... and yeah, completely agree that there’s definitely room to do some original story stuff with the park

Here are some of my ideas, based on shots from the film:

Junkyard -- The Entrance to the Park

Cemetary Land

Main Street -- Main Thoroughfaire

Milk Shop (Main Street)

Wasted Food Land -- Home to a Restuarant?

1597953390412.png

The Docks -- Should definently be expanded: has lots of potiential

The Railways -- the train would make for a good e-ticket

And of course, the Egyptian Theater

I like all of these but the Junkyard and Wasted Food areas... I know they’re in the movie, but there’s like nothing appealing about those two from an immersion standpoint... maybe we add two to three original ideas to replace those?

Sure!

Trying to think of some original ideas...
  • Cat Store
  • The London Underground
  • A British Monument of some kind (either the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, or Big Ben)

I like the monument idea... wonder if the underground is too similar to the train? Cat store is a decent idea, but I wonder if it’s too generic... going into a calculus lecture now (YAY ) but I can think about it afterwards haha
