Swimming in January

My family has always vacationed in the world during the summer months. This January will be our first time in the winter months. I noticed that the pools and even one of the water parks are open during this time. My question is how cold is it usually in January and is it warm enough to swim? I have noticed that some picture from December and January have people wearing sweatshirts and even gloves. Thanks!

We're going in January also and I was just looking at climate info last night in the '08 Unofficial Guide. Here's what it said for January:

Average daily low: 49
Average daily high: 72
Average daily temp: 61

Of course, it's anyone's guess as to what it will actually be at that time.

Our family has been pretty much around that time before and it is very unpredictable. We have been there when it has been as warm as 80 during the day and down to 40 at night. The pools are always open and we have always seen people swimming in them. They are heated so while your in there you would be okay but it would be a long cold walk to your room.:)

My GF and I were there last January and I thought it was great weather. I wore t-shirts everyday. We went to BB for a few hours and it was ok when you were in the water, a little chilly when your in a queue but all they were tiny anyway.

We're from the UK though so even a little heat is very hot for us!

We've been there during January several times and the weather has varied from trip to trip and even from day to day within a trip. The first time we went it was beautiful and we were able to hit TL without being even slightly chilly. The next trip we had to wear winter coats, gloves, and scarves in MK early in the week and later in the week were able to go to Blizzard Beach. So you just never know.

JMHO, but if you are from anywhere north of the Mason-Dixon line, January in Florida feels great and is warm enough for swimming. Like others have said, it may be a little chilly going back to your room, but worth it; just run like hell. The pools are all heated.

We've found that most of the time, during the warmest part of the day, swimming is just fine because they heat the pools. But if you try to swim too early or late in the day, it's mighty rough. Nothing like waiting in line for a slide at Blizzard Beach, dripping wet, in 60 degree weather.

If you are from up north and getting out of the snow you will be swimming.
I've been in Jan, Feb & March and we've been swimming one day (about 78 degrees) and the next morning it was 27 and windy as all get out!
We bring shorts, jeans and layer the tops with light jackets or a hoodie. We always bring our bathing suits because you just never know.

We were just there this past Jan and we had 2 days that were 80 degrees. It was beautiful!! And my nieces and nephew went swimming. The pools are also heated during this time of year. I just kept looking at the weather for what we should pack. Weather.com gives you a ten day outlook.

We went for a week this past January, and the weather varied a lot. It was humid and in the low 80's for the first 1/2 week, and we swam at our hotel. It wasn't chilly at all. The second 1/2 of the trip, we had lows in the 40's and highs in the 60's- we didn't swim then, but I'm sure some brave souls did.

I'd bring swimsuits, just in case. You never know when the weather will be warm enough to swim, even in January.

Since you are from the North (we're in NJ), you'll love swimming. All the pools are heated all the time, and the spas are lovely.

We were there May 2005 during a cold spell, and it was 58, but we were in the pool and loved it.

I used to live in NW FL for a while, and it's generally a bit colder there, but the snowbirds (as they called us - especially if you were from Canada) all swam all year round.

It sort of depends...I was there this January and thought it was nippy (from South Texas), but the Yankees ( ) saw it as swimsuit season! When I went in 2003, though, I was in sweatshirts, jackets, and hats and the orange growers were worrying about their crops. It's all sort of the luck of the draw, but good luck!

Everyone who posted hit the nail on the head. It's totally unpredictable so bring a little of everything. LOL!

Now, let us be hoping for no tornados. Yep, we were there when the tornados hit Kissimmee and killed some people in the wee hours of the morning ((I'm pretty sure it was in late January this year)). I lived in Central Florida for 10 years when I was a kid and tornados aren't too common in that area. We had been out pretty late the night before and got woke up around 6 a.m. by my parents frantically calling us trying to find out if we were okay. We heard some thunderstorms but nothing else. The rest of the morning we had a ton of family and friends calling us to see if we were okay. It was crazy!

been to Disney a couple of times in January and i notice there are two big factors. What is the temp in Disney and what was the temp when you left you home. One year it was -5 in Jersey the morning we left. It was around 60-65 in Disney and we were wearing shorts and swimming because of the huge difference in the temp it felt like summer ti us atleast for the first couple of days

Yup, I agree with the general concensus on here... it does get really cold and nasty somedays, other days, you'd swear it was a summer day in July!

I too come from the land of cold and snow from November to March, and we often go at this same time, and most times, we swim regardless of the weather!! We're just Krazy Kanadians that way!! *nyuk, nyuk*

Just have a great time, it will be better wheather than where you are coming from!
