Just curious, now that we know more, do you still feel it was an overreaction?
With this knowledge, no I don't.

However, had that bomb threat not been made, I still think it would have been an overreaction.

Disney has no choice but to play it safe. It isn't just terrorists we have to watch out for, it's the crazies. Terrorists didn't blow up the Federal Building in Oklahoma, or shoot all those students at Columbine or Virginia Tech. We're living in a different world now. And 9-11 is only part of the problem. I don't like to live in fear, though. I try to think positive, and act smart.

Perfectly stated!

Threat or no threat, having an unattended bag checked out is not an over-reaction.

I was at Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta in 1996 with my then 5 yr old daughter when that bomb went off.

Trust me when I tell you that changed my life forever. I am constantly aware of my surroundings.

Actually most places use a robot to go to the package and check it using various testing methods, then if possible will open it and dump out the contents if it is say a briefcase so they can further inspect the contents. Some things the robots arent capable of opening such as the zippers on backpacks. Therefore they canot be further inspected and are destroyed.

Oh please! Everybody is overreacting to a practically non-existent threat. You have a greater chance of dying from a hangnail than being killed by a terrorist. Are there terrorists? Absolutely. Are they dangerous. Some are, definitely. But the chances of anything on the scale of 9/11 (which only happened because our gocvernment was asleep at the wheel) happening again are remote, even with the shredding of the Bill of Rights. If you people are scared, then stay home. Blowing up an unattended book bag is ridiculous.

First off...please don't quote the Bill of Rights crap. They are PRIVILIGES...not rights! And if the Bill of Rights were "God given", what happend when they were made? Was God forgetful and left out slaves and women?

Non-existant threat????? Why don't you tell that to the families of the 343 firefighters that died in the WTC collapse? Or tell that to the families of the people that worked at the Pentagon? Or tell that to the parents that lost childern at the daycare center that were on the first floor of the federal building at Oklahoma City? Or the people at the Summer Olympics in Atlanta? Or that abortion clinic in Birmingham? Half of them were carried out by EVERY DAY AMERICANS!!!

People like you are IDIOTS!! "Oh, its ridiculous and will NEVER happend to me!" If people were honorable, decent, and used common sense........you wouldn't need a police or fire department, not would you? Instead...you can tough intellectuals like yourself to simply walk over to every bag and just take it home to put in your closet?

You are obvioulsy clueless to the bad people that are in America! Do you have any idea why you can't take liquids on a plane? Do you have any idea that you can get stuff at Home Depot or even your average supermarket and basically LEVEL a building? A bomb that can fit in an average backpack can make quite a crateer, kill dozens of people and probably maim way more than that if its packed with the right projectiles. But of course, that will NEVER EVER happen. ;)

Do you think that all terrorists wear turbans and they will be easily spotted? In reality, a terrorist can be your neighbors and what you thought were everyday people. They can be anti-abortionist, religious fundamentalists, anarchists, anti-government, or just plain CRAZY! All someone needs to do is beleive in something and need a little motivation to make a "statement". I've seen people who wrap aluminum foil around their air vents in their house because it will stop the government from listening in on them! Or people that rip all their phones off the wall because "they" can see what I'm doing.

Get with it or else you are going to end up being a statistic that you thought will never happen.

I traveled all over North America in my last job for about 10 years. I flew about 4 days after 9/11 happened and had to go through O'hare Airport in Chicago. For those that don't know, O'Hare is the busiest airport in the world and just an unreal sea of people once you get into the terminals.

Not quite the busiest, but who' counting :animwink:

Please remove head from sand (Or any other orifice for that matter). Believe it or not, there are actually people/entities out there that want our country and any other founded on Judeo/Christian beliefs to be wiped from the face of the earth. It's not going to affect how I live day to day, but I am definitely cognizant of it.

Not that this is a funny situation at all but since it was at Disney I was picturing all those guys from The Child Dection Agency (CDA) in yellow suits, coming from all over the place and bolting down that metal thing like when they blew up the kids sock in Monster's Inc.

that would have been the Disney way to take care of it

haha, i thought the same thing!!

the world really isnt any different, just some peoples attitudes. there has always been people who hate and want to hurt others. there are just more ways to do it and more ways for us to hear about it.

GREAT SCOTT!

:p

Yes, I have nothing better to do.

hilarious, absolutely hilarious!

but anyway, yeah it sucks that some mom will leave her bag somewhere and now it gets treated like a bomb, and 99.999999% its just the tshirt she just bought but honestly, does anyone really ever want to take that chance?

We're starting to get a little too deeply into bickering and politics. We need to scale back a bit or I'll have to lock 'er up.

Hey there all, As far as the suspicious package, better that form of overkill of blowing it up safely than having a discussion as to a tragedy that occured because no one took action. Sorry folks, but better safe than sorry on this one!!!! Belle

I think that it was a great thing for them to take the safety precautions that they did. I know that the people making fun of them now would be the first ones complaining about Disney not doing their job right if there were to be an actual bomb. Did them taking care of that backpack hurt you in any way? Were you harmed by it? No. If it had been a bomb and gone off would it have affected you? Yes. What is the harm in simply inconveniencing a few and proactively taking care of a problem that could affect millions of people?

First off...please don't quote the Bill of Rights crap. They are PRIVILIGES...not rights! And if the Bill of Rights were "God given", what happend when they were made? Was God forgetful and left out slaves and women?

It's people like you that are totally un American. They are RIGHTS (which is why they are called the bill of RIGHTS. The Constitution is a check on government power, and the bill of Rights was created to insure that the government could not randomly do what it wanted to the American people. The rights afforded to the American people cannot be changed without a Constitutional Amendment. Take a civics class and learn something. You are completely ignorant. I guess the next time the National Guard comes to your town, they have the right to force their way into your home and sleep their, right? I mean, isn't the third amendment's ban on quartering of troops just a privilege? The army can camp out in your yard. And that freedom of speech? You don't really need that. How about I use my power as a U.S. Attorney and arrest you because I don't like what you are saying. Are you a christian? Well, how about if the next President makes it illegal to be a christian. It's a privilege, right?

Non-existant threat????? Why don't you tell that to the families of the 343 firefighters that died in the WTC collapse? Or tell that to the families of the people that worked at the Pentagon? Or tell that to the parents that lost childern at the daycare center that were on the first floor of the federal building at Oklahoma City? Or the people at the Summer Olympics in Atlanta? Oh please. I am a New Yorker, so don't think invoking 9/11 is going to scare me into thinking "oh my god you're right." Not gonna happen. No matter where you live, there is going to be the risk of a crazy person, or crazy personS that are going to want to harm you. However that doesn't give the government a blank check to do whatever it wants in the name of safety. In fact, most of their "safety" plans and procedures are visual at most. How many fake bombs have made it through security undetected since 9/11? But more importantly, how many so-called terrorists have been caught using the new rights-infringing policies? I can tell you. None. All would have been caught without those stupid laws. How many domestic terrorist have been caught? The proposed solution for school gun violence? Arm the students! Yeah, that will really work, since school shooters are suicidal anyway they are really going to be scared-off by their fellow students.

You are beyond ridiculous. If you are so scared, stay home! Don't mind the FBI snooping into your phone conversations? Make a three way call every time you use the phone and hook them up directly. Want them going through your credit card statements and bank records? Go ahead and send them copies each month. After all, we want to stop the terrorists, right? These agencies are reviewing these things daily on millions of law-abiding citizens using terrorism as the cause, despite the fact they have no reasonable cause, a requirement by the fourth amendment. And the police and Fire department serve their purposes. But they must do so in the confines of the law. What if I decided one day I was bored, so I sent the task force to raid homes on Bleeker Street. No reason to do it other than being bored.

But of course, that will NEVER EVER happen. ;).

Perhaps you should live in a bomb shelter since you are so scared. You are being absolutely absurd. If you want to live in a free society (which you clearly don't want to) then there are risks. There are risks in EVERY society. Americans have had this false sense of security for decades. And let me add, the 9/11 highjackers didn't have any illegal substances on the plane with them. So all these precautions are cosmetic. If you are afraid of blowing up in the sky, then take the Amtrak from now on.

Do you think that all terrorists wear turbans and they will be easily spotted? In reality, a terrorist can be your neighbors and what you thought were everyday people. They can be anti-abortionist, religious fundamentalists, anarchists, anti-government, or just plain CRAZY! Get with it or else you are going to end up being a statistic that you thought will never happen.

Again you are being stupid. I am not going to walk around living in fear because people like you want to live your life like that. An empty backpack? The odds of it having a bomb are so remote it is laughable. Should caution be taken? Yes. But to evacuate an area is ridiculous. This case is a little different now that we know exactly what happened and the guy claimed there was a bomb, so it seems justified. But are we really going to continue evacuating airport terminals because someone left powdered sugar on the floor after biting into a doughnut? Does that not seem ridiculous? Or because someone who littered left a paper bag on a bus, we know have the SWAT team chasing it down. Caution, yes? Overreaction to every little thing? Ridiculous. Get a life. Stay home in your bomb shelter and let the rest iof live our lives without the government's hand up our #*&^%& :animwink:

Actually, O'Hare and Atlanta seem to trade the title every year.
*EDIT

Apparently, O'Hare is the second busiest in the world in terms of passengers, but not flights. The Federal government restricted flights at O'Hare due to the number of delays, which is the only reason Atlanta is now the busiest (in terms of flights). Not too terribly exciting.

God bless the "Ignore" button.
Really

You cant even spell right "gocvernment" and your an authority of terrorisms

:drevil:

Really.

You can't even spell "you're" of "terrorism" correctly or use proper grammer or punctuation and you're an authority on spelling.

Regarding this whole terrorism thing: my first impression was that if someone really wanted to blow something up, they'd at least hide it a LITTLE instead of just abandoning it somewhere. But, then again, these people aren't known for being all that smart...

I wish someone would throw the locks on this thread:brick:. I am a NY'er and watched 9-11 with my own eyes without a television set, I am an American who watched the devestation in Oklahoma City and I am very proud to be both. I am proud to be a sister and wife of 2 retired NYPD. Let our country and our law enforcement do what it has to in order to keep us safe. So we become inconvienced, so we become late to a meeting, as long as we don't become dead. Take your head out of the sand. Our war isn't over yet, threats are real and every one should be taken seriously. The one overlooked will be the one that hurts us.

Just a note... it's always interesting to see the ones who scream over-reaction, rights trampled by the patriot act, police state, fear mongering, etc when there's an incident... they are also the same ones that will scream government corruption, cover-up, conspiracy, asleep on the job, etc when something actually happens and people die.
