Just a general question, my family and I will be there at the end of March and my father-in-law likes sushi, so I was wondering is the new sushi bar in the Japanese Pavillion a sit down or counter service? We will be on the DDP too. Thanks.

Not old, just vintage.

Teppan Edo is a full service restaurant and serves sushi. I tried to get ADRs for it on my trip in January but couldn't get any. I was really excited to try their sushi too! :slurp:

You can get Sushi at Teppan Edo, but it won't be included on the Dining Plan. You can still pay for it OOP tough, if he really likes it. :D

A couple of things on Teppan Edo:

Even if you can't get resies, they're GREAT at doing walk-ups. DW and I were there a few weeks ago and thought we'd call dining to see, and nope, no availability, so we walked up to check, and were seated within 20 minutes.

Try the eel roll, very sweet, very fresh, SO good! It's a table-service, and the prices are actually decent. I think we paid less there than we usually pay in Celebration at Seito. And the view is great!

Actually Teppan Edo is the Japanese Steakhouse... yes, it has sushi, but the Sushi/Tempura restaurant in Japan is called Tokoyo Dining. The two restaurants are adjacent to each other and both are full service. My understanding is that neither one takes DDP or DDE.

Kimono's at the Swan has good sushi. If you get an Orlando visitor "Magicard", you can get a 10% discount there, but again no DDP or DDE.

There is a counter service place in Japan that has sushi. I don't remeber the name, but if you walk up the hill past the drums and Koi pond, it's up there. They used to serve really good Lo Mein, too, but I don't know if they did away with it during the refurb or not.

Thanks! Thought I might have had them backwards. The check-ins at the top of the stairs are the same (just different colored pagers), so I forgot which was which. BTW, the Bright Blue pagers at Teppan Edo are REALLY bright... don't look into the light...

Haven't tried it but I have read reviews of California Grill saying the Sushi Chef there is excellent and will make up anything you want, even if it isn't on the menu. I agree though that it is a little on the pricey side.

What ever you do don't go to Yakitori House. The food is like prison food...totally rubbery!
Teppan Edo is really good it is a table service meal and the best sushi you can get there in my opinion is Crispy Suklyaki Beef Roll (4 pieces $7.50). They grill the sushi which is a bit unusal but very tasty!
In Teppan Edo they cook the food in front of you.

A bit off topic, but Wolfgang Puck's has really great sushi in DTD. We ate in the sit-down (Cafe?) and the sushi was the best of everything we had there. The waiter told my DH that they can make a sushi entree for the DDP when we there in Sept....don't know if that is still true. He had it for an app. and wish he had more!

they also serve it in the express part....made in cafe and brought over so may sit for a little bit...haven't tried it there.

This may be a little late for this time around on your trip, but for future reference, Disney proper has two different sushi bars... one at the California Grill, and one at the Kona Cafe in the Polynesian. Both are excellent. The sushi chef at the Kona Cafe trained under the sushi chef at the California Grill for a number of years, so their styles are similar.

Wolfgang Puck's is a decent third choice for sushi, and I have enjoyed a number of good rolls there.

I haven't had the chance to try the sushi at Japan yet, and despite the warnings I have seen here I am still game to try them.

Finally, there is Kimono's at the Swan. Frankly I consider this a last resort for sushi on the property, but then I have only had one experience there. The place felt more like a lounge than a proper sushi establishment, and frankly I didn't find the sushi to be all that good.

I am not listing the different places where you can pick up sushi in the little boxes like you would find at grocery stores, since I figure you are asking about freshly made sushi, not something you could find at Publix!

I don't remember there being sushi at Teppan Edo. Because we were just there in Feb and my bf would have had it in that case. I think you are thinking of Tokyo Dining, same building, other side. :)

Theres a sushi bar at the Poly too, just fyi.

I have never had sushi at WDW. If you walked into any of the better places and asked the chef for omakase would they look at me like I had two heads.

If they did give it to me, would I get interesting high quality stuff, or would they unload yesterdays slow mover on me?

At the California Grill, I am pretty sure the head sushi chef would know what you mean, and the rest would have a good chance. The chef at Kona Cafe might have a tougher time, but I think he has been around long enough to know (this is just a guess, but when I spoke to him he seemed to know what he was talking about and had enough experience.)

At the California Grill, ask for Yoshi.... she knows her stuff which is why that sushi bar is so popular.

My Fav Sushi in the whole world is at Tokyo Dining. If you like your food a lil spicy i highly, HIGHLY suggest trying the Volcano Rolls. It is a California Roll topped with chunked spicy tuna, and covered in Spicy Japanese mayo. Makes my mouth water just thinking of it. I once stopped at Tokyo Dining for every meal and snack of the day just to get my Volcano Roll fix.

Also, The Tokyo Dining restaurant has what i would consider to be one of the best hidden treasures of WDW. The Giant HD Panel on the far wall shows beautiful pictures, in mind blowing resolution, of Japan. Really helps give an authentic feel of the mix of tradition and technology that is a big part of the Japanese culture.
