It's less than a month away from another season of Survivor! Season 38 will premiere on February 20. A couple of hours ago they released the first video on the season since the finale for David vs Goliath.

Feel free to post any thoughts, reactions, predictions, etc. about this season!

Let's hope this will be another fantastic season of Survivor!

I’ve been very cautiously optimistic about this theme the whole time...it’ll either be very intriguing or a complete mess. I suppose if it’s a complete mess it could still be entertaining though!

The biggest thing that I don't like about these Exile/Redemption/Edge of Extinction seasons is those twists take away from so much of the gameplay that we're able to see. Imagine DvG if they had to take 10 minutes per episode to show another place. We would have missed so many great moments and gameplay. Now, they are starting with two tribes of 9 this season, and hopefully they won't split them into three tribes, otherwise we will get very little of each tribe.

I just watched the returnee interviews, and I forgot how much I LOVE Kelley Wentworth. Such an attractive personality. I would totally be her best friend. But what's weird is, I was not rooting for her in Cambodia even though I loved her. I was rooting for Spencer.

David Wright has a CRAZY idea that he wants to do this season, which would be EPIC if he can pull it off.

Aubry is amazing. I'd be best friends with her, too.

Joe is... Joe. Not much to say about him.

I'm excited to have Survivor back, and cool with 3/4 returning players (Joe seems like an okay guy, but not sure I'm ready for him again yet). Love Aubry (still can't believe she lost), and David Wright is great too. Kelley is cool. The main twist both intrigues me and makes me nervous. I don't like the idea that players that are voted out are still in the game, even with it being different this time. It's possible that I'll be surprised, though. Last season was one of my favorites in a while.

Not a fan of the Redemption Island/Extinction twist, but I will be open minded about it because the players will not know about it until they are voted out.
This seems like the Outcast twist from Pearl Islands, except the viewers will know about it ahead of time and get to see the island they live on when voted out.

Tomorrow is the big day! I'm still skeptical because of the whole "Redemption Island/Outcast" twist, and the 4 returning players versus newbies, but I'm still excited nonetheless.

In the past I've done a male and female winner pick. I've been wrong with Vytas in Cambodia. I've been right with Adam in MvGX. Last season I chose Dan and Alison. Dan was a flop, but Alison was an alright pick. This season with the returning players, I'm going to make a prediction this way: one returning winner and one newbie winner.

Returning winner: Kelley Wentworth
Newbie winner: Victoria

Honorable consideration: Gavin

My pick for returning winner would be David Wright. I'd love to see it be Aubry, but I don't have very high expectations for her unfortunately. Joe and Kelly will likely be around for a while. I may be off with this, but David doesn't seem like someone that everyone will be gunning for right away. If he can get to the swap, look out.

With the new players, it's trickier. I can point out the players that I don't believe will last too long (Ron Clark, War Dog, Big Wendy, Lauren), but it's trickier to pick the winner from that group. I like the Victoria pick and think she'll do well. Eric also seems solid, Julie too. I also think that Chris, Keith (despite being young), and Rick should be okay. Unsure who I would pick from that group, though. I'll go with Chris.

Of the winners, I think David is the most low-key. He's the only returnee to play just once before, and even though he played a very good game, he's not viewed as this Survivor powerhouse player like Aubry and Joe. Plus, he is not a challenge threat. The reason I chose Wentworth was because of her personality. She draws you in and has something to her that just makes you think you're her best friend. Plus, she's athletic, but not on a target-level. And she's very good at strategy, but subtle about it. I just wonder if she's going to be too into an all female alliance. That could be a problem, because typically those alliances don't pan out, outside of Parvati and Kim. I could see Wentworth being someone who could make it work, though. Especially with newbies who may idolize her.

I think David is in the worst position right out of the gate honestly. He’s clearly a threatening player, and isn’t really a challenge asset, so I could see him leaving early. I hope not though!

This is a long read, but it's probably my favorite Survivor article I've ever read (and I've read more than my fair share). So many interesting behind-the-scenes facts and insight about what happens the morning before the marooning takes place. Very cool!

It never ceases to amaze me how people say they’ve been watching since day 1 so MUST understand how delicate the social game is and yet are totally oblivious to their own annoying and abrasive behavior.

Thoughts on the premiere...

1. The Edge of Extinction theme is interesting, but we haven't been given enough yet to judge. I will say I had mixed feelings when Reem was voted out. I thought it was fun that she had no idea what was happening when she reached the sign. But also, it lessens the impact of the votes, which I'm not a fan of.

2. Reem played that so poorly. Lack of social skills. You don't attack others when they are clearly in favor of voting you out.

3. I like how self-aware Keith was at the well. He knew sticking with Reem and Wendy would ruin his game, so he did exactly the right thing and outed them. I'm impressed by those skills coming from a 19 year old. Wendy played the situation with David and "Wardog" (is that what we're calling him? He was never actually addressed by a name I don't think.) terribly.

4. Kelley got a LOT of air time tonight. That's either a pretty good sign, or a pretty bad sign. I do think she played Tribal Council a little poorly and got pretty defensive when her name was thrown out. I also thought it was a bad move to ask why Reem didn't mention David at all. That's going to push David away from you, and you need him right now.

5. The tribe dynamics are a little bit different with two returning players on a tribe instead of just one like they've had in the past. That makes one of the returning players expendable because you can get the knowledge from the other one. I saw this when they talked about keeping Joe, but getting rid of Aubry. Same thing with targeting Wentworth, but there was no mention of David.

6. I have a feeling a major storyline this season will be, "the returning players are targeted each and every vote", which is already getting old after one episode. I know the season is still early, but it's more fun when it's either all new players or all returning players.

7. The premiere felt rushed with only one hour. I didn't get to know many people. Lots of air time went to the returning players, who I don't need to be introduced to because I already know them. At least try to make me like some of the newer players.

8. New players I kind of like with very little to base this off of: Keith, and nobody else made much of a positive impression on me yet

9. New players I don't like with very little to base this off of: Eric, and nobody else made much of a negative impression on me yet. I don't like Eric because first, he was targeting Aubry, and I like Aubry. Even though I think he's strategically smart in that sense, I can't help but want Aubry to stay. Also, I don't like him based off of his preseason press. His personality would get to me if I had to live with him. He has also been accused of not having watched Survivor before being cast.

I’m also intrigued by the extinction angle. Historically people that “know” they’re going (even though Reem WASN’T until she sealed her fate at tribal) get that last minute satisfaction at tribal by lashing out at those who are clearly going to vote for them but in this case she just burned bridges on the way out. There’s no one there who would be happy to see her back (maybe Wendy?). Even with a blindside there’s usually a few people who don’t see it coming who would welcome back the blindside-ee. It will be interesting to see when/where/how they are brought back.
