Studios search lights missing?

Thanks. Was hoping you would see this thread. I'm hoping it is the first scenario, but fearing it is the second. Perhaps there is hope of a return when the hat is finally removed, and the Chinese Theater is looked at again as the focal point of Hollywood Blvd.

I definetly hope for this too. First, for the hat to be moved sooner rather than later. And then for the lights to return...

" shutting down the spotlights, WDW is being a responsible corporate citizen and setting an example for energy conservation. Good work!"
Yes... Excellent...they should have no lights and just hand out the flash lights that you need only to shake to get to work..
I for one (of many) am disappointed they aren't on today
"they over power the ambiance of the hat" was the lame excuse I was given by the guest services cast member...this only after he asked.."what search lights?"

Perhaps they could switch to LED spotlights. I'm not up to date on the current technology for high powered spotlights, but I do know that LED lights offer tremendous energy savings compared to conventional lights. I'm sure that new LED lights would be rather expensive but considering their long life span and their reduced power consumption they would be worth the investment. And as I said before, it would reflect nicely on the Disney Company for setting a good corporate example.

Disney has actually widely expanded its usage of LED fixtures across property as part of green initiatives. This widely took off in Entertainment venues first, but now you can see them in places varying from shops to uplighting palm trees. Almost every Entertainment venue at Studios uses some type of LED fixtures (Idol, Voyage, Disney Jr, Beauty and the Beast, Fantasmic!, Premier Theater, Icon Stage Special Events). LED units also light the Castle on a nightly basis. Spectacle of Dancing Lights is entirely LED now. So the technology is utilized...and will most likely continue to be utilized as the technology continues to mature.

LED power does not (yet) compete with anything of a 2000w-5000w nature...such as in the case of "sky trackers" or "Syncrolites" (Epcot).

Thank you for that information! I wasn't aware of how extensively WDW has embraced the use of LED technology. My very limited experience with LED lighting is only with products I have purchased for use in my home such as room lighting, outdoor spot lights, flashlights and HD television sets. I have been very impressed with their high quality and low energy consumption.

Wasn't able to get pics tonight cause we left right after the fireworks, but I'll try to stop by in the next few nights to see if they are still on! They were definitely on tonight though! Looked great!

This is an example of Disney being too good for itself. Clearly, the lights haven't been on in awhile and very few people noticed. The only ones who care are the die-hard fans. Is this going to stop people from going to DHS? No. So what incentive is there for Disney to run them every night? None. It's an added, and I'm sure pretty expensive, overhead expensive when it comes to their electricity bill. Unless somebody has information about a refurbishment or new lights being installed, I can see it as something they will only use for special events or holidays.
