strollers...rental vs. bringing your own

just looking for a little input from some of you WDW vets; i am heading to WDW on jan. 9, bringing a 3 year old. she hasn't used a stroller in months, but we are sure she'll want one for in the parks. i am leaning towards just using rental strollers and not bringing hers, to try and save us some headaches with the airlines and busses. i haven't rented strollers before, so i'm not sure what to expect. any advice would be great!

If I allowed them to be lazy whenever they wanted we would have never gotten out of the hotel room, we would have been eating breakfast at 1 in the afternoon, and they wouldn't have taken showers or brushed their teeth. I guess next time I go I'll stop and get a wheelchair to wheel myself around on because I might get a little tired and thats a good example to set for my kids, its okay to take the easy way out.
ok after this i'm going to drop this because i think you are taking this to seriously. but being a woman i need to have one final say. you have missed my point entirely i do agree with you in the every day sense. as in you need to keep your kids from getting to lazy like not watching to much tv or playing video games for hours at a time.they need to do chores but on vacation it should be different the idea that any kid would rather lay in bed at a hotel when they have the best amusement park in the world just down the street is just silly. and would it be the end of the world to sleep till noon and stay at the park till midnight? are there teeth going to fall out if they forget to brush them one day or shock two? i'm not saying to rent a stroller just so a 12 year old can be pushed around the park.i'm just saying if he or she got into a stroller for a few min.'s with a younger sibling it isn't the end of the world. your kids will not turn into ax murderers if you just relax a few rules while on vacation. i guess when my kids are grown i want them to remember that i made them responsible for them selfs. i taught them to work hard and not give up but i also want them to remember the times we laughed so hard i couldn't catch my breath. when we all slept till noon and had the biggest ice cream sundays for breakfast in the food court of the hotel. or when we were just being silly and i told them now its your turn to push me in the carriage and my son laughed so hard i thought he was going to pass out. sometimes the best moments are when you're doing something silly. ok i'm done i'll step off my soap box now but maybe next time you go to WDW for one day you could try it and see what happens.
p.s. thanks for the great debate i love a good argument:D

What you dont seem to realize is that you keep quoting PARTS of my posts to try and solidify your point which is way off the original topic but it takes my ENTIRE point out of context. Dont you think it is more reasonable to read the whole post for what its worth instead of just taking out the parts that you want to use and disregard the rest because it doesnt fit your opinion. Which is what I posted in the first place...MY OPINION....All I originally posted is that we took our own stroller for my TWO YEAR OLD and that I didnt like seeing 12 year olds riding in strollers. It doesnt make me a bad person or a bad parent for not liking it, its just not something I will allow my kids to do. It was just MY OPINION. Just because we are on vacation doesnt mean I check my principles at the gate. I am not the one who took things too seriously, to as you put it politely disagree with MY OPINION took this post completely out into no mans land. I didnt challenge anyones opinion I just stated mine. I didnt care if it BUGGED somebody else that I didnt like something I saw, I was just posting what my experience had been on this trip. You can disagree with me all you want but it still bugged ME, not you. Do you get my point?

To the original poster, if you have a long trip, and it sounds like you do, it might be good to just bring your own to be able to use, and if it becomes to much of hassle to carry on the buses and such you can just rent one and not have to deal with it. We found ours handy in the airports and around our hotel also. Good luck and have fun.

Normally I'd say bring your own for two major reasons....the Disney strollers are not the most comfortable things in the world and because you can't take them out of the park...so at day end your own is very convenient.

If the child isn't using a stroller though...a rental has a big advantage in that you're not pushing around an empty stroller all day. If you don't need it, don't rent it.

With that said...at the age we're talking about....I'd still bring one. With all the walking at WDW...your child will tire out and will eventually need a stroller.

This bugs me. I rented a double for my daughter who is going to be 9 in a few days and my niece who is 7. It's not because they are lazy it's because they get tired from all the walking. My oldest niece who will be 12 soon also sat in it a few times. Sometimes older kids need a break too.

Then you need to slow down. You should be taking breaks....the kids won't enjoy it if you're exhausting them and not enjoying the experience. Sit down once in a while and rest.

What's the big deal? If riding helps make a happier, less stressful family vacation, then why not. I mean, it's not hurting you. It's not going to affect your life in any way, so what does it matter? JMHO

Different strokes for different folks. It's doesn't make one wrong and one right. *shrugs*

I believe the OP just wanted to hear the pros and cons of renting vs bringing her own stroller for her 3 yo.

Thank you to those who kept on topic and answered the question. Please let's step away from the parenting opinions, and back to the financial/convenience pros and cons of renting vs BYOS.

Rental stroller cost

The double stroller is $18 per day and the single stroller is $10 per day. If you pay for 2 or more days of rentals in advance they knock off $2 per day.

I would definitely recommend bringing your own. We always bring ours for several reasons:
1. Comfort. Ours is a nice padded stroller that reclines.
2. Convenience. Our stroller has a storage area underneath that is perfect for our bag and anything we may buy. It also has a tray (that can be detached) that is perfect for snack time.
3. Cleanliness. Kids are sick throughout the year and we don't want to worry about anything getting passed to our son if we can help it.
4. Recognizable. It seems that after exiting a ride and going to get your stroller from the stroller parking area it is a lot easier to find our stroller rather than figuring out which blue plastic one is the one we rented. Sometimes the CM's move the strollers around in the parking area if it gets really crowded.
5. Do you really want to carry your child at the end of the day after you turn in your stroller but you still have to wait for the bus to take you back to your resort? You'll be very tired and if you are staying at a value resort you could still have quite a long walk ahead of you until you get to your room---some of those rooms are really far from the lobby!

We have never worried about someone stealing our stroller. We don't leave any bags or personal items in it that could be easily lifted. It folds up really easily for riding the bus/monorail.

OK....can I chime in? Personally, when I brought my infant I was so relieved we brought our own stroller! They are completely inadequate for an infant but I remember thinking...."Wow, those are great for 8 or 9 year olds!" And really they are. Toddlers nap so it doesn't work for them and babies, forget it. But older children, I think that's probably who they were designed for!

For toddlers the strollers at WDW work just fine. We just returned from WDW and needed to rent a stroller for a few days. 12/22 -12/30 during this time we could not rent in advance so to speak. You had to rent daily. We did this on a few occasions. The strollers are handy but if you will be in the parks for more than a few days it is far cheaper to buy a stroller and ditch it when you are done...even on property, they sell red/black umbrella style strollers for $40. The big plastic strollers are handy w/the pouch in the back and the shade on top ( A MUST) but if you are staying on a big property..the values or CSR then you may want one on the bus (look for one that folds compact).

This is not entirely accurate.

The first time you rent a stroller at any of the 4 WDW parks, you should pay in advance for the number of days you will be renting. Not only will you get a $2 per day discount, but you'll also get your rental passes and receipt at that time, too. This means that on subsequent rentals, you don't have to wait in line and pay.

Well it is 12 years since we last rented a stroller - I guess things change

Bring your own!!

We have brought our full size folding single or double stroller for the past 6 years. We have done so flying, and driving. The added convenience of always having the stroller at your disposal is worth the inconvenience of folding it to bring on the bus.
If you have a car, you have to deal with folding it to get on parking lot trams. Another convenience is having the stroller for the sometimes long walk to the busses at the end of the day. After a long day at the parks you very well may be carrying your child, diaper bag, souvenirs, etc. from the gate to the busses.
But if you are anything like us, travelling with two children, we bring alot of stuff. The park strollers don't really give you a place to put it all. Quite honestly I'm dreading the day we wont need a stroller anymore, because we will really need to scale down what we bring into the parks! Hope this helps!:)

Every year for the past 4 years, we've brought our own stroller which is now a double, and the biggest hassle is definitely the ride on the tram. With everyone boarding in a rush, we tend to get huffed at and even a driver has laughed at us trying to get a 4 & 2 year old boarded with the monster stroller and bags - you get the idea. When we went for MVMCP on the 21st, we decided to leave ours and try the rental b/c of the price break, and it was probably the easiest way. The line was smooth when renting and the strollers are ready for you to pick up. The one down side was trying to find ours amongst a sea of blue strollers! The next day we rented again, and the kids loved it. Our 2 year old was able to nap and didn't look too uncomfortable. Hope this helps and enjoy your trip :)

We have brought our own strollers and rented. They both work & it really depends on your preferences. The convenience of having your own stroller is for that long walk from the buses to the park or your resort. You can get there much faster if pushing your child rather than carrying him. However, for a little older child, maybe like your 3 year old or 4-6 year old, renting would be more convenient since they can probably make the walk, they just might get tired throughout the day in the park. We found when renting that putting down a blanket really helped keep the stroller more comfortable and even possible to nap a little since the plastic is quite hard.

We would never leave our home without a stroller. Once you get to the airport the stroller is a godsend! Same for the resorts! We stayed at Port Orleans Riverside and used it there everyday! We are going back this year and do not even own a stroller now but will probably be buying one for the trip. I know that I have seen the doubles that are set up like umbrella strollers which will be perfect for us. Easy to fold and will still lay back if our 4 year old decides shes sleepy! I believe that the price of buying one will be cheaper than renting one for 9 days. Not mention the convienience of having at the other locations that I mentioned! Have a great trip! Wish we were going that soon!

Seems people have settled on only a few options here. Rent a disney stroller, bring your own stroller or buy a umbrella stroller.

There is an other option we used on the last trip there and that was to buy a stroller at a local Wal-mart. In our case we were taking a two year old and a five year old. The five year old doesn't usually need one so we need a double stroller, if we had rented one at disney it would have cost us $144 plus tax ( nine days at 16/day), instead we bought one at Wal-mart for $89 plus tax and had the option of taking it home when we left. The walmart option also gave them the ability to lay down which the disney's will not allow. The only thing that is a problem when you have your own stroller is getting it folded for those parking lot tram rides.

If you don't want the stroller when you leave you can always leave it for someone else, for us the bottom line was what would make the trip more enjoyable for everyone. A stroller makes life easier and if you have your own it is also easier to get around and depending on which resort you stay at a stroller can make life a lot easier.
