I think much of that is that it has been all but buried by the company. The only way to see it is to seek it out, either on DVD or via streaming. It isn't a film that people come across by accident and the company has no real interest in promoting it, since it was such a big financial flop and, let's be honest, has issues. I have always loved it, but I'm weird. I think if you were to ask people born after 1980 if they've even heard of the film, most of them won't know what you're talking about.

I've loved The Black Hole since it's initial release in all it's quirkiness, so yeah, not born after 1980.
