Star Wars themed land announced for Disneyland

I'm having a tough time visualizing this. So somewhere after the Train goes thru Splash Mountain it will cross the river at some point past hungry bear I'm assuming. And it will go over the water on some bridge? How tall would this bridge have to be for the Mark twain / Columbia to go under it. So this doesn't sound right to me.

I was assuming the river would start to turn somewhere past critter country and wrap around the front half of TSI. Meaning the river would be substantially cut and the DLRR Would still be traveling on land albeit new land where the back half of TSI and ROA are currently.

That sounds more likely - I can't imagine a bridge situation that would accommodate the Twain and Columbia.

Besides the obvious w.t.h, I am extremely confused as to why they would go to so much trouble to save ToonTown. My only possible thought is it is slated to be part of a future Fantasyland expansion. I can't see anyone willing to go to bat for saving Toontown this much. It's insane.

Yeah, still think it's a bad idea though. Standing in NOS/ Critter Country and looking at the river that seemed to go on forever is just one of those things that add depth that most theme parks don't have and what makes Disneyland Disneyland. If I can see the entire loop that will be lost for me and the atmosphere on the West side of the park would suffer for it.

Yup. It would be freaking awful.

This means that Star Wars Land will displace most of the Rivers of America and half of Tom Sawyer Island, as well as Big Thunder Ranch, the Fantasyland Theater and some backstage areas. Tragic.

Before we get all crazy here let's at least wait to A) see if this plan materializes, and if it does, B) find out precisely what is envisioned. Taking this story for fact leaves out a lot of very important details like the rerouting for the Columbia and Mark Twain, just for starters.

I can't help but think they are just putting this rumor out there so that people don't complain as much when they bulldoze toontown.

Lol, I was thinking the same thing. All of sudden bulldozing Toontown sounds great! Even if Roger Rabbit has to go.

This may be sacrilege, but...

I don't think it would be so bad if they cut a few minutes off the trip time of the Mark Twain and Columbia by shortening the route north of the Hungry Bear Restaurant. It's easily a 25 minute process from the time you enter the dock waiting area until the time you leave the boat, and the trip itself takes about 16 minutes.

If they cut that trip down to 12 minutes instead, it would seem more appropriate for today's audiences and wouldn't make those boats seem so slow and boring to many people. It's like the difference between the slightly-too-long 15 minute MuppetVision show and the far tidier and faster-moving 10 minute Tough To Be A Bug show. Shaving three or four minutes off the trip time of the Mark Twain could do wonders for that 1955 classic.

I should also remind folks that the stretch of the river north of the Hungry Bear has offered it's own visual problems for the past 15 years, with the Mickey & Friends structure visible through the trees from the Mark Twain no matter how many new trees they plant and how much Miracle-Gro they pour on them.

Using the incredible visuals of Cars Land and Avatar Land as a guide for 21st century Imagineering on a big budget, fixing the visuals across Disneyland Drive and tightening up the trip time could be a nice improvement for the original 1955 boat route. Why am I in such a sacrilegious mood today?!?

If this rumor is true, I'll be fascinated to see how this whole plan fits together over and around Disneyland's northwest quadrant.

@Lee posted in the DHS Star Wars thread confirming what I've heard about Star Wars Land's new placement, so I figured I'd bring the conversation here where it will be more on topic. While the plan was originally to take over Toontown and backstage areas, those plans have now shifted.

Fantasmic and the Rivers of America attractions will go down for 18 months (possibly longer for the attractions) starting as soon as January. The Disneyland Railroad's track will be rerouted to cut Tom Sawyer Island in half by going across the river from Critter Country. This would put the train tracks on a trajectory to run through where Big Thunder Ranch is now, eventually rejoining the original track somewhere in Fantasyland. That's not great news for Mickey and his magical map either.

I find the plan appalling. Toontown is much more expendable than the Rivers of America, and I can't imagine Disneyland fans will feel much different. I'm a big fan of Star Wars Land - it looks amazing and sounds phenomenal - but the placement is all kinds of wrong. I hope there is still time for Disney to change their minds on this.

This plan is WAY TOO BOGUS.
One of the most far-fetched rumors I've ever heard.

Just announced...

The following will suspend operations at the end of the operating day on January 10:
  • The Disneyland Railroad, including all stations
  • Attractions along the Rivers of America, including:
    • “Fantasmic!”
    • Mark Twain Riverboat and Sailing Ship Columbia
    • Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer Island
    • Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes
Only reason to do that would be to drain the river...

Yikes!!! Holding out hope that all that is happening due to the heavy demolition/construction that is sure to be happening just to the side of the river at Big Thunder Ranch and not the larger crazy plan that is being talked about in this thread.

So much for Disneyland being loved and cherished by those who run it. One of the most exquisite themed environments is more than expendable for a brand experience.

I wish this was far fetched and bogus. As today's announcements show, it is not.

Sigh. Got to get a lot of railroad and riverboat trips in over the next few months.
