Star Wars themed land announced for Disneyland

It has not been publicly announced, but it's the internal plan. I won't be surprised if it gets pushed back to 2020 however.

Which is exactly why I asked the question. ;) I'd be very surprised if SW land opened at DLR before 2020. Avatar was announced for Animal Kingdom 2011 and won't open until 2017. Obviously SW is a lot further along in development than Avatar was when it was announced to the public, but we all know how long and drawn out Disneyland's construction timetables can be.

I never said Splash Mountain going out :>

I dont think it will be "collecting dust".
They can have plenty of time to remove and deassemble.
I dont think that removing most props, animals, stuff.. counts as "construction".

Well you said the land was going away. And Splash Mountain is in Critter Country. So then what would happen to Splash Mountain? Would it be a part of New Orleans Square or Star Wars land ? Neither would make any sense. Critter Country isn't going anywhere.

I've done a couple measurements using aerial maps and they can find 14 acres with just the ranch and the adjacent backstage areas. There's no need to touch ROA or any other on stage area, it doesn't mean they won't but I'd be surprised if this affects any current areas beyond the ranch.

This would be ideal. And it's most likely the case. I'd rather them conserve as much of the current footprint of the park as possible for Critter Country / Fantasyland expansions. I would say Frontier land too but I don't feel like Disney has any desire to expand the old west theme.

Well there won't be any room to expand it now that SW is confirmed to take away the portion of it where any potential expansion could have gone.

Well technically they could use part of TSI or ROA for a Frontier land expansion. Not that it would make much sense for them to do it. If I had my vote Frontier land would be dead last as far as renovation / expansion. I would rather see a fasntasyland / critter country / adventure land (highly unlikely) expansion or Toontown / Tomorrowland renovations.

I was asked not to give details, but there's only so many park areas that can be affected if the Ranch is part of the SWL plot. We've got a smart group here.

Re-routing the northern dogleg curve of the Rivers of America? Re-routing the Disneyland Railroad? Likely both, I'd imagine.

Aren't both of those already considered to be "in" Frontierland?

I guess what I meant previously is that the areas beyond BTR would logically be where growth for Frontierland would go. With SW claiming the space that can't happen.

Me too.

There's a recent list of Disney park expansions that show a major land needs a solid three year construction timeline from groundbreaking to grand opening. There's a varying number of years attached on the front end from the time a senior executive announces it to giddy fans to the time actual groundbreaking begins. But once you get bulldozers working, it's a three year timetable.

Cars Land - Announced October '07, Groundbreaking June '09, Opening June '12
Avatar Land - Announced August '11, Groundbreaking January '14, Opening Spring '17

You could do New Fantasyland too, but it was such a mess from announcement in '09, major plan changes in 2010-11, and a phased opening from 2013 to 2014 that it's hard to quantify. But it boils down to a three year construction timetable for most of it.

To resume, you just IMPLIED that I said Splash Mountain.Even when I didn't?
Maybe I should have been clear.
All the "upper" part of Critter Country (aka 37 and 34 in Disneyland's Map) , Leaving Splash Mountain and Winnie Pooh intact.

Forgot to mention...
Remember that in Magic Kingdom.. Splash Mountain seems pretty much standaalone sitting in FrontierLand next to Big Thunder.
They could have just chunked it out and themed the whole upper part Frontierland before it transforms into Star Wars land.

But then, that's just pure speculation (after all, the conversation was about how Toon Town will be untouched.. and the Thunder Ranch is probably one of the 100% sure things to close down for Star Wars land ).

There was a lot of repeating what a spokesman said after D23 - that SWL wouldn't break ground at DL until 2017. I've been saying since then that that is not the case and construction starts in 2016. I was pointing out that Staggs has confirmed that and the ranch closure is the first step.

Again, they want this to open in 2019 - they can't wait any longer than early 2016 to get started if they have a hope of meeting that date.
What does this has to do with your "collecting dust" comment?

Crude concept art. I think I put it in the wrong place.

Just a couple weeks ago when the ranch closure came out people were still insisting construction wouldn't start until late 2017. There's no reason to close the ranch in Jan 2016 if construction doesn't start until late 2017.

Now staggs has confirmed what I've been saying since the announcement. Groundbreaking is in 2016.

Right i see what you re saying....my bad, expansion is the wrong word. Since TSI / ROA are part of Frontier land I guess the right word would be renovation / additions? I knew that TSI and ROA part of Frontier land on the map but being that TSI is visible from 3 lands and the ROA runs along those same 3 I kind of consider them to belong to the whole west side of the park.

The scale is way off, my guess is the overall height will be similar to Big thunder mtns peak, 50-100 feet maximum. The scale above would be closer to 200-250 feet and would completely dwarf everything else in the park including the Matterhorn. If you were to make the front star wars column the same size as big thunders peak I think it would be more accurate and then I'm not sure you'd even see it over the trees.
