It IS possible that the trail remains and the expansion includes backstage areas, so some old parts of Frontierland could live on...?

I think the trail remains and the rockwork in front of ranch will stay. It would make good transition between the two areas.

Can we get some clues please? I'm assuming this to mean SWL will alter the layout of the Rivers of America somehow or be visible and take away the feeling of being on the Frontier or the backwoods of Critter Country? Wait... why am I getting the feeling that the back half of Tom Sawyers Island is gone and the Rivers of America will be shortened? @GiveMeTheMusic

You won't have to wait too long for more info. It'll become pretty obvious very soon.

While Toontown may now be safe (ish, anyway), I'm not sure fans are going to like the new footprint better. More details coming very soon.
My guess.. Critter country, Rivers of America, Pirate's lair, Tom Sawyer's island and Big Thunder Ranch will be gone.
..

equally painful?...
Then it will be on tomorrowland.. removing everything behind the matterhorn, autotopia, , the subs.

Big Thunder Ranch has been comfirmed to be on the chopping block. They would never get rid of Splash Mountain / Critter Country. The most I can see them eliminating in addition to BTR is the back half of TSI near the fort and some of the back portion of the ROA. If they really did clear all of those backstage buildings I don't think they would need more than that to get their 14 acres.

I For one would prefer SWL to take over the subs / autopia portion of Tomorrow Land over its current proposed location.

If we see this alien Star Wars world from Frontierland and New Orleans Square, that's kind of awful.

You can already see a Bavarian Castle and a Swiss mountain from Frontierland, or from the second or third deck of the Mark Twain or Columbia. You can also stare at a rocky red mountain that looks like the deserts of southern Utah from the front door of the Caribbean pirate ride in New Orleans Square.

From the front walk of the antebellum Haunted Mansion you get a view of all sorts of themes and mountains and clashing stories as you look across the park. And this is after 60 years of tree growth; imagine how much more you saw when Walt built all this stuff decades ago!

If the rocky greenery-clad cliffs of Star Wars Land are visible in the distance from New Orleans Square, it will seem tame in comparison to the many other inter-land views around the park. Disneyland will survive.

Tom Staggs announced on a Thursday investor call that Star Wars Land would begin construction at Disneyland "in 2016". http://www.ocbj.com/news/2015/sep/10/disney-set-break-ground-star-wars-land-2016/

Yup. The ranch isn't closing in January so it can sit there for 18 months and collect dust!

Well, aren't you being mysterious! :D

I was asked not to give details, but there's only so many park areas that can be affected if the Ranch is part of the SWL plot. We've got a smart group here.

I dont think it will be "collecting dust".
They can have plenty of time to remove and deassemble.
I dont think that removing most props, animals, stuff.. counts as "construction".

There was a lot of repeating what a spokesman said after D23 - that SWL wouldn't break ground at DL until 2017. I've been saying since then that that is not the case and construction starts in 2016. I was pointing out that Staggs has confirmed that and the ranch closure is the first step.

Again, they want this to open in 2019 - they can't wait any longer than early 2016 to get started if they have a hope of meeting that date.
