Meant to mention this before but for any Lego and RotR fans, the Lego I-TS Transport (the ship you board) is now available in stores and online.

Did you actually read the article? The point is that the character was marketed as a big character in the lead up to TFA (and had a decent sized role in that), just for him to be “benched” for the rest of the saga.

Boyega tried to warn of the optics of “benching” the poc characters to no avail.

After TFA, Rey and Finn probably should have been the love story of the trilogy, but by the time Episode IX came around, it was def meant for Rey and a redeemed Ben.

Finn had productive arcs in TLJ and TROS. I like John and certainly respect his POV, but I don’t Lucasfilm put him on the backburner they way he did. It’s almost like he had to have Rey’s arc to feel satisfied.

Time will be probably be kind to all of those actors and the Skywalker Saga will get its legs again in a decade or two.

It’s so weird seeing all these articles come out after Boyega said what he did. Fans have been saying the same things for years and were called toxic, racist, sexist, etc. for it by the exact people now writing these articles because they dared question LucasFilm’s decision making. Blows my fricking mind lol. Also it’s just further proof of how many times the loudest virtue signalers are just full of crap and say what they do for PR brownie points without actually doing anything meaningful.

Finn should’ve been our main Jedi hero and Rey simply a very competent fighter from the same humble beginnings Luke and Ankakin had. How’s that for a subversion of expectations? A Stormtrooper turned Jedi and the typical background for our main hero the past two trilogies isn’t our new main hero.

The writers could have saved everyone the controversy if Finn the Empire deserting Storm Trooper turned Rebel Alliance member had not survived his encounter with Kylo Ren at the end. He would have gone down fighting for what he believed, a hero! For the next two iterations his memory could have been a motivational reference to heroism in the fight against the evil empire. Instead a lot of cerebral energy is being spent trying to figure out what the character could have done.

There were a handful of bold moves that could have been done with Finn and they didn't really do any of them. They could have had him sacrifice himself in The Last Jedi, the could have had him and Poe become a couple in The Rise of Skywalker, or the simply could have re-written his role to be far more significant in the last two movies.

I think the problem is that between Rey, Finn and Poe they were seeking a similar balance as Luke, Leia and Han. The way it played out though is that Finn effectively filled Leia's role (or at least that's the best parallel) but they didn't give him enough of a critical role.

I still haven't seen Rise of Skywalker (the first two weren't interesting enough to motivate me to watch it), but I will say that Finn seemed superfluous in The Last Jedi. His whole plot encompassed most of the worst scenes in the movie, and was essentially pointless. It felt like they weren't sure what to do with him and thus shoved him to the side with some random filler.

I can understand why John Boyega wasn't too happy about it.

in all the pre-TFA interviews, he was pretty excited to get the role. Sounds like they bait-switched him. I may be giving them (DisneyFilm) too much credit and maybe they were winging it.

My understanding is they were completely winging it and had no real overall plan for the trilogy.

It's this. This is a company that actively pushes and celebrates people of color playing roles of characters that were originally portrayed as white (I have no issue with this). Finn was "pushed aside" because Riann Johnson wanted to subvert expectations in TLJ so strongly that it compromised the trajectory of the trilogy arc, giving Finn nothing to do in Rise of Skywalker.
