Do I care about any of the characters on Pirates or Mansion? Nope. Still great rides. Still love the pirate ship attacking the fort scene or the graveyard scene
This is a very fair take. Any WDI-created IP (or IP that is nearly defined by in park experience like Splash or ToT) doesn't have to grapple with this, and keeps them as classics. I think with the nigh-exclusive development of integrated IP like here with Star Wars, different, additional expectations can be created by a subset of guests.

We do have Jim Evers and Jack Sparrow to care about. Although we never did get a Eddie Murphy animatronic.

Not sure if it’s been mentioned, but are they doing some kind of combination projection paired with artificial shadow effects? In the interrogation scene there are great convincing shadows cast by the backlit characters which wouldn’t happen with just a simple screen. I think it does a lot to make it seem like they are sharing the same space as you.
