Star Wars Land announced for Disney's Hollywood Studios

If the land opened fully with Rise of the Resistance, the complaints about Oga's Cantina and Savis Workshop's wait times and Smugglers Runs shortcomings would be far less impactful.

Nope - gripes would still be gripes. ROTR isn't an alternative to the catina, etc.

No one is walking away going "that was it?" or "i'm bored already"

I’m mystified by the cantina design.

The things that made the cantina memorable in the movie were the music, the band, and the alien creatures.

So I guess there’s music in this cantina, but the aliens seem like a missed opportunity. If they didn’t want to do a band of AAs, there were other options to make this feel more like a Star Wars environment. Imagine a layout with a second floor, inaccessible to guests, with a few simple AAs of alien customers drinking and grunting unintelligibly. It would sell the idea of this being a Star Wars cantina more than anything I’ve seen so far.

I think it was because they aren't trying to duplicate Tatoinee... because you aren't there. So they need something in that spirit.. while still making the outpost it's own unique place. I haven't seen a full video of the place yet to really comment more.. but I get what you are saying. You just have to be sure it's not a 'copy' or feels like it, etc.

Its mostly two users who are constantly bashing everything from how they cant go up the falcon ramp to how hondo is a terrible character and how han should be the only character on the ride. Plus they are constantly complaining about how the land is set in the sequel trilogy and not the original trilogy.
I wondered what was going on there. I didn't see all that negativity on that thread at all, and was wondering what Leia was talking about. I must have those two people on ignore, cause I am not seeing a lot of negative. A heck of a lot of positive.

Pointing out 'mistakes' and missed opportunities is perfectly fine... if done with the awareness and the matching language that it's not the end of the world.

There's a difference between, "Ah, it's a bit disappointing that they missed the opportunity to have the correct satellite dish for the land's canonical timeline," and "ZOMG, wrong dish!! They have billions of dollars and can't get anything right!! Wetherman Igor gots to go!!"

I'm only guessing the logic by Disney here, not claiming it's right or wrong. Interestingly Universal doesn't allow costumes or masks at Halloween Horror Nights, I wonder why?

The irony is that for MK's Halloween party, it's the one time adults *can* dress up!

Perhaps Universal is Disney World from an opposite dimension. That's why it has a goatee.

That sounds very reasonable.

Maybe people are too used to big chain/franchise bars and were expecting the same cookie cutter approach in the Star Wars universe?

In seriousness, I heard on a Stream that ROTR is supposed to have a number of elevators? So is it TOT/GOTG like? It's doesn't look tall like TOT of what we can see. There's a lot of brush around there.

Again not a big SWGE researcher.

Two floors to the ride. Two elevators up; two more down at the end. It's not a drop like TOT but you will notice that you are crashing down. It's not a coaster.

Even in the sequel trilogy they could’ve used Han if they wanted and if Ford was willing but that’s neither here nor there. Is what it is. Would’ve been cool to see an OT hero in the one ride most tied to the OT.

I don’t see DHS having the Oga’s situation, because you can buy alcohol at the rest of the park (Baseline is going to be packed). It does look like TDO sorely underestimated how many people are interested in building a $200 lightsaber though. Having the reservation window allows kinks to be worked out before the true masses are allowed into the park.
Honestly, the mere fact that there's apparently waits to buy a $200 lightsaber tells you Disney has struck gold. I previously hadn't heard that the waits were too bad for Savi's. Is it also similar to Oga's?

I definitely agree that the waits for Oga's won't be as bad at DHS. There's two ways Disney could cut the waits at DL: expand the access to alcohol across the park or abandon alcoholic beverages at Oga's. If push comes to shove, I think we all know the path that will be taken.
I've been trying to figure out more about the Play Disney App and the roleplaying it involves. Apparently, it can actually do quite a bit.

First of all, it's sort of Disney's version of the Harry Potter wands. You can interact with droids, doorways, and ships. One guy said he "hacked" the Falcon and it actually opened an exhaust port and made noise.

Second, it offers the chance for die-hards to learn more about the backstory of the land and its characters. Apparently, there are all kinds of easter eggs and references sprinkled throughout the land hidden in Aurebesh, alien languages, and hidden signals that can be decoded using the app.

Third, there's an ongoing game throughout the land that you can join in. You're supposed to track down various control panels and take control of them for the Resistance or the First Order. Ideally, this will create a constant tug-of-war that will be continuously shifting control of the village between the two sides. This is the closest they have to come to delivering a truly immersive roleplaying game.

Finally, the app is how they can track your "reputation" throughout the land. If you open the app and join the game while in line for the Falcon, it should add the credits you earn on the ride to your account. And, according to one article, if you sit in a booth in the cantina with the app open, it will actually communicate with some lights on the walls that will tell CMs what kind of reputation you have. This is how you could have a bartender remark on your performance flying the Falcon. Unfortunately, it seems like this kind of interactivity is impractical in these crowds, because I haven't seen anyone mention experiencing this kind of conversation yet.

Right now, it seems like the consensus on the app is that it's very limited (and glitchy) in its current state. But it sounds like the framework is all in place for something truly special. It might take a few years to really take advantage of it due to the overwhelming crowds, but I think it will be worth keeping an eye on this "Datapad" experience. We could see some really groundbreaking stuff come out of all this.
Someone on twitter said they talked to an Imagineer that said not all of the features of the app are ready yet. Obviously the two ROTR games aren't available, but there are land-wide features that are also coming soon.

*Nearly the end.* Also, you will feel a "drop" near the end, but you will *know* when you are going up. When you are in the up elevators you will ascend with a view of the AT-AT set, which is the only full-height scene in the ride.

Oga’s has a virtual queue now; you put in a reservation at the cantina, and you’ll get a text message when there’s a free space for you.

Savi’s doesn’t have that yet, but I have to assume it will happen. This is the IP that parents make a mad dash for at DHS to sign their kids up for Jedi training. Now there’s something they can experience (with a $200 price tag), so it’s no wonder the lines are long. Disney is getting $2800 every fifteen minutes or so, they’re keeping this experience for sure.

When the expansion inevitably happens, I have a feeling another restaurant- with a bar- will be included. Oga’s in Orlando will probably feature the virtual queue from the get go, so the craziness that Anaheim has faced probably won’t happen. Guests also will have more options for drinks at DHS.

I know very little about RotR outside of the AT-ATs, and let me just say, I am super excited for the ride for those two things. I’ll be wowed by the rest of it, I’m sure, but the AT-ATs are a dream come true for me.

The land looks like a great place to explore, but I’m surprised it doesn’t “read” as being quite like the movies’ universe. I get they don’t want people spending a long time in the cantina, but making it more of an alien-populated spot would’ve helped sell the idea of this being another planet.

Another question I haven’t seen asked - is there any use of forced perspective to make the rocky spires look further away?

A lot of what you were hoping for appears in the concept art for the (cancelled / delayed) TSR:

The stage to the left, the protocol droid AA, the alien singer at center... we can liken the Cantina to the bar at 50’s Prime Time Cafe - it was designed to be a place to grab a drink when you didn’t have a reservation for the “real” cantina experience.

It’s dumb they left this out to save a few bucks.
