Well to be fair, all Star Wars movies are about war but not all of them have felt as dark as the least 3 as the example I provided in Force Awakens.

Hollywood has been on a dark tear lately. Unfortunately a lot of the public eats up the darker tones so I don't see it changing anytime soon.

I think Hollywood has painted themselves into a corner. Every movie they make has to be this huge, epic, life changing event. So they have to spend a bazillion dollars to make and market it. Then if everyone and there brother doesn't go see it, it's a failure and they lose money.

Throwing money at movies wasn't what made the originals so popular or good. Most of those movies had very little budget to work with and they were still better.

When I was watching Solo I thought to myself "Star Wars (1977) was just some rinkydink piece of junk made for $5 and now we have this soulless, calculated movie"

The rinky effects were charming and added warmth and heart to the movies. Think back to all the classic, really good movies. And now imagine them being remade into blockbusters. They would all be ruined.

The Princess Bride is one of my favorites. Cheap effects galore. I pray someone never remakes it. I'll refuse to see it.

There are hundreds of smaller films released every year. By comparison, the big block-buster tent-pole movies are few. But, they get all the advertising. Just look at Get Out last year. It was a cheap indy project as important to the African American community as was Black Panther. And it turned out to be a sleeper hit.

While most big studios try to do both big blockbusters and smaller films, it is Disney with their 10 films a year that takes the blockbuster or bust route. That should change if they keep Fox and Fox Searchlight as semi-independent studios (if they merger merges).

My two favorite movies this year (although technically 2017 movies I think they were only released at festivals) have been Thoroughbreds and The Death of Stalin. Does this make me pretentious? Maybe idk. Still need to see A Quiet Place but that's a good example of a smaller movie doing big. Really the only argument I have against blockbusters, though, besides being tired of hearing about them from shills like Collider, is that they could easily take that $250 million budget and make five $50 million budgets. $50 million is a much smaller risk but, if good, can bring in way more money. I mean, a $50 million budgeted movie that makes $200 world wide is $80 million profit whereas a $250 budgeted movie that makes $600 world wide is about $20 million profit. Just seems like better business to me to make more smaller movies than a few gigantic movies. Throw out a bunch of movies that cost only $25-$50 million to make and you have a way better chance at earning back your production costs as well as making a profit plus, because the movies are less expensive, ticket prices at theater chains go down meaning people go see movies more.

The only reason Boba Fett was a cool character initially was because of how mysterious he was and all the crazy fanboy rumors about him being some top secret Jedi and whatnot. Then Lucas went and did the whole Jango thing which gave a bit of his backstory and I think he sorta lost a lot of that appeal.

I'm going to guess that with Boba, if they do it, they're going to do a Maleficent (also... part 2, ? no thanks!) type villain-to-hero story where we see him in a different context. I really don't want that. Leave what little mystery we have about Boba alone please!!!

My favorite movies of 2017: call me by your name, the florida project, IT, Mother, It Comes at Night, Dunkirk, get out, Loving Vincent,... Phantom thread, not my cup of tea. Missed the cyberpunk film with scarlet based on the anime... god my memory is slipping. Saw TLJ, liked it. Coco, liked it. Lady bird was extremely overrated. Actually awful.

2018: black panther. so good. cant even remember what else I've seen. I think i spent the first few months this year getting caught up on oscar nominated films like three billboards, phantom thread, the shape of water. Shape of water was my favorite of those three.

Hey everyone, I know I mostly only use this forum to track construction details at the parks and document my projects like the stretching room model and the hatbox ghost costume, but in light of the transphobia etc. shown here (subjects which, if you catch my drift, are pretty close to home for me), I'm choosing to not post here anymore because I don't want to be associated with that.
Don't go!

Plus, more Fresh Baked and stuff!

I don't see a lot of films in theaters these days. My faves of 2017: Coco, Loving Vincent (I have a feeling every art teacher on Earth is going to show this to their classes) and Cars 3. And Ferdinand wasn't terrible. The Movies-Starring-Cattle curse started by Home on the Range has been lifted!
Fave of 2018: Ready Player One. That's, uh, all I've seen... :D

I think it’s pronounced Django.
Your thinking of the wrong Django.

And these I agree with. The point I was trying to make was in reply to a post say that Star Wars is primarily for young males, its not and shouldn't be.

It's appeal has always been to predominantly young males.
I don't understand why you attach a "shouldn't" to that.
If a series of movies had appealed to a predominantly female audience, would you believe that it shouldn't?
Would you believe the franchise should be reimagined to bring in males?
Many a good product, from rock bands, to automobiles, to beer have been ruined by the intent of reinventing those things for broader mass appeal.

Yes, most movies have an agenda.

But for movies like Star Wars, who are pushing these agendas despite their fan bases falling predominately into a small category , they shouldn't be surprised when interest starts becoming luke warm, and toy sales slump. Which is exactly what has been happening.

No one said there can't be strong female characters in Star Wars movies. But you should consider what the majority of your fans are going to be looking for in a movie, unless you want the majority of your fans to not be fans anymore.

Would anyone consider making a princess movie that's main character was a strong male? No. One one would do that.
They should make Frozen 2 with the focus being on a male character and see what happens to the millions of young girls who love Frozen. There goes toys and princess costume sales.

Why can't anyone realize it goes both ways?

Just because it's the in thing to do now try and make females just as strong as men in every way conceivable, doesn't mean everyone will eat that up.

Another example. My son LOVED Doctor Who. He wanted to be Doctor Who so bad. He asked for Doctor Who toys, books, costumes, you name it. He would play with his sonic screwdriver pretending for hours.

Then they made Doctor Who, who is a time LORD, a woman. He was sad. Not because he hates women, but because he no longer had any interest. He no longer asks for any of those things anymore. There were plenty of strong female characters in that show before, but that wasn't enough. The agenda needed to go further.

Nailed it.

Here's my Solo review:

It's the second best Star Wars movie with Darth Maul

My overall ranking of the movies

That’s really really close to my own ranking.

By the way, and this isn’t really a spoiler since it’s just a throw away line: Did anyone catch the “Black Spire” name drop? I hope Episode IX includes a sequence where Rey must travel to Batuu to learn the ways of vlogging, and livestream herself standing in a 5-hour line while begging her viewers to smash that subscribe button lest the First Order cut off her ad revenue.

I hear Kylo Ren will travel to Batuu to learn about the dark side of the Churro.

We can bet there was a rough childhood that led him to his evil ways.

Maybe his twin father wasn't caring or affectionate enough. Maybe being raised by the very person you'll become is too much for anyone to take.
