I don't mind overlays because it gives us something new to see and they usually plus up the attraction. I just don't like things being closed forever.
Agreed. Although, it seems that the mindset now is create things that can just be consistently overlayed depending on whatever hot IP comes through in 5 years. I don't want them treating attractions like movie preview centers.

I understand the appeal of attraction-closing-forever merch, but pre-attraction merch??? This seems like a new low.

Never let it be said that Disney doesn't try to squeeze as much money out of people as they possibly can.

You obviously have never seen Star Wars fans clamor over Star Wars merch. This is just Disney keeping in the same traditions as Lucas who merchandised every aspect of the Star Wars universe he could.

No I haven't. Though I might also naively call this the lowest common denominator "merch" possible. Just proof that you can slap a name on anything and people will buy it.

Star Wars merch is a phenomenon all on its own. Its grown so popular that it now has its own day when merch is released called Force Friday.

Just do a Youtube search on "Force Friday" and you will see over 3 Million videos.

The merchandise launch thing really began with The Phantom Menace. Everyone buying the merchandise before the movie was even out. I guess you can't blame Disney for this. Actually, their selection is modest. Then again, we're not a month away from opening here.

I'm actually reading through Lucas' bio right now. He was smart to secure merchandising rights before A New Hope even hit theaters. He basically had to use that revenue to fund a majority of Empire.

Yep, like I said Disney is doing nothing more than following Lucas' tradition of merchandising every aspect of the Star Wars Universe. Since GE will be part of the Star War Universe it stands to reason they would merchandise it as well.

Just wait, the next 18 months you are going to see more and more merch released for GE. I would expect a new selection of items every week or two.
