I don't know if we can blame Chapek directly for this, he's not a creative consultant.

Chapek has been out front on this thing, hyping it and bragging about it, for years now. He's in charge.

Even if it is "lower budget", they could have made it a better experience than we've seen so far

They could have made it look more like a starship and less like a new Hampton Inn.

I kept asking myself as I watched it, what is it about that bar PR footage that looks so cheap and dorky?

It's like it was footage from a 1980's SciFi TV show only budgeted for one season, or maybe a well funded college film shoot. The guy from the Goldbergs didn't help. But the bar set looked cheap and flat. The costumes looked half-baked and made by someone's mom. There's only one singer? No band? An alien band practically made Star Wars what it was in 1977, and the girl singer has no backups and band?

Cheap. Flat. Phoned In.

And what's with all the women? The Goldberg kid and the bartender were the only men on the ship, and apparently every Imagineer exec that worked on this project was also a woman. It looked like the Dinah Shore Weekend in Space. WDI fired all the men on staff who actually loved Star Wars when they were 12 year old boys? I'm sure there's some talented women at WDI who love Star Wars too, but it seems way too feminine-based for an IP that is heavily masculine (or used to be when it was wildly popular) and based entirely on war and armed conflict. Where'd all the guys go?

This whole Starcruiser thing is a dumpster fire in the making.

I'm still not convinced this early PR footage is not a giant goof on the fan community. Purposely released video using fake sets and cheap props to fool everyone and poke fun. Then they open the real Starcruiser hotel experience that is truly fantastic and fully realized and we all go WOW!!! and Social Media explodes. I mean, they can't be this cheap and sloppy on this thing. Not for 2K a night.

Chapek is cheap and stupid, we all know that, but he can't be this cheap and stupid. Can he??? :confused:

Does Imagineering slant female or are they just showing the women Imagineers or what? I don't know if gender matters that much if you "get" the audience but maybe I'm just too amused by the idea of a big, cigar chomping exec aceing the design of a Princess Breakfast.

Personally, I'm surprised at the lack of animatronics--it's less about lack of one gender or another than lack of aliens altogether. Your first thought in a galaxy far far away should be that you're seeing something you've absolutely never seen before on Earth, not "damn, this is sexist toward me." If that's your first reaction, either you're the commanding general of the social justice warriors or (more likely) Disney failed to put you in the state of wonder that's necessary to enjoy what the hotel is supposed to be.

I don't know - they've never let me stay longer than one hour in the room and they've never provided food as part of the experience.

If you want to compare the cost of the Starcruiser experience with other space travel, one person paid $28 million for a seat on Blue Origin's New Shepard that flew for 10 minutes to the edge of space. That comes out to $168 million per hour and makes the Starcruiser journey look like a pretty good bargain.
Had no idea that you could fly to space.. in a real spaceship.. in Disney's starcruiser.

Pardon me as a West Coaster for being behind the curve here, but I just watched a few videos on YouTube of this hotel and tried to get caught up on it after it was mentioned in a Disneyland thread. And... yikes! o_O

Like everyone else here, I think everything they've shown us of this Galactic Starcruiser looks really cheap and fake. And completely not Star Wars, but like a low budget 1980's SciFi movie from Italy or Korea that's a bad knockoff of Star Wars.

Which got me thinking... They honestly can't be this stupid and miserly. I mean, we all know Chapek is a cheap and clueless bean counter, but he can't be that cheap and clueless on a $2,000 per night hotel. Forgive me if this has already been thrown out there as a theory, but is it possible this is all a giant spoof by Disney? Like they are goofing on us and purposely put out videos of the fake and cheap looking hotel sets and experiences while they secretly hide a fabulous and genuinely Star Wars hotel experience? Then when they actually open the doors to this fabulous experience, they get a ton of publicity about how they fooled and spoofed all the fans for the past few months?

Right? Maybe that's the plan? Because they can't honestly be this cheap and stupid. Can they? :oops:
Or.. they are going for the full GALAXY QUEST experience :p

I get how the boardroom thought that Galaxy’s Edge would have the “rough and western” aspects of Star Wars covered. So with that at the center of their big bulletin board, they felt at liberty to have the hotel off on the side be posh, sleek, Prequely.

What a grave miscalculation.

For all the grief WDI gets for not putting Galaxy’s Edge in Tattooine, I support Star Wars Land NOT being a greatest hits land. I’m all for Batuu. BUT THE HOTEL could have been greatest hits, and it would have worked SOO much better than this! Essentially a resort like Art of Animation, but with Tattooine, Hoth, and Endor set pieces. Done! Book my trip now!!!

Being called a "misogynist" is almost always a lazy attempt to stop someone from voicing their opinion. It's second only to "racist" in words that have lost all meaning because of their sloppy over-use by lazy people.

Which is a shame, because occasionally there are actual cases of people having contempt for women or believing that one race of people is physiologically or biologically superior to another race of people (which are the actual definitions of those words).

Don't ever let people using vocabulary incorrectly stop you from voicing your personal opinion on theme parks.

I can give them a pass so far on this Star Wars Hotel thing because what they released was purposely pre-opening hype aimed at the theme park fan community. When the real marketing and glitzy TV commercials come out later this winter it will be interesting to see how they handle it.

But what is unmistakable is the blatantly women-centric team they created (or at least showed publicly) to create this product. It's almost as if they are embarassed because the top two execs in charge of this project are men; Mr. Damaro as the Parks Chairman and Mr. Trowbridge as the WDI Star Wars Portfolio Executive. And so they stacked the deck and didn't let any other men appear anywhere else in any of the pre-opening marketing or cringey "roundtable discussion" footage.

There's a bartender in the lounge who is male, but then every other employee of Chandrila Star Line, the ship itself, and Walt Disney Imagineering is female. And it's also apparently Ladies Nite in the ship's lounge because out of the nine other passengers shown there, seven are women (the two men get pushed into the background or have their faces hazed over while the camera shows the women, but two men passengers are technically there).

The problem with all that from product creation to cringey marketing seems to be that the core story being told here, Star Wars, is inherently masculine and based almost entirely on war and violent armed conflict.

I still think there's a chance this is all a huge prank and goof on the fan community. I just can't quite wrap my head around the apparent fact that this Star Wars Hotel concept was done so cheaply and badly.

If they were going for “prequely,” double yikes. Myself and many others who are predominantly prequel fans got the short end of the lightsaber if this was geared at us. Nothing they’ve shown appeals to me. It all feels off-brand knockoff to me. And dare I say, you could find better looking set construction in some of the more talented and well-funded high school theater departments.

I think that would actually make some kind of sense if they were doing that, and doing it for that purpose.
Unfortunately Disney's marketing of Star Wars has all but abandoned targeting males of almost any age.
I've yet to see a video clip of them marketing Galaxy's Edge or this experience aimed at a father and son.
It's a glaringly obvious and deliberate omission.

Well, maybe? But I think we'd see that concept more in the actual official TV commercials and slick press materials they'll roll out later this winter; Super Bowl commercials, spots with perky Good Morning America hosts, etc.

This was all pre-opening stuff aimed at fans in the know. I really think it's just what they feel should be presented; almost entirely women who designed and created this concept, and it will be populated and staffed almost entirely by women. Even the captain is a woman. The bartender is a dude though.

It's just so forced and cringey. When you layer that cringe on top of what appears to be cheap and phoned-in set design and interiors that look more Hampton Inn than Star Wars, it's a complete mess.

It's all just a tad suspicious to me. I know Chapek and Covid have both caused the Disney company great harm, but things really couldn't be this bad...

This appears to be the main elevator lobby near the front of the "ship", behind the dining room.

If they tried that type of marketing there would be 28 year olds in WDI who would complain to HR about "toxic masculinity!" and "supporting the patriarchy!" and "not being inclusive!".

I keep expressing doubt that it's all going to be bad as what they've been showing us, I find it hard to believe they can be that clueless, cheap, or that they deliberately thought they could steer people any direction they want.
There's got to be more, right? LOL

This is different, and there is a glaring exclusion of males in roles and as the targeted audience.
Well, except for half of the four human characters we’ve been shown so far - plus Chewbacca. Also, the “amazed guest” in the awful video that got taken down - you know, the character intended as the audience POV?

And tell me how this is different from Mon Mothma and Princess Leia being the two most prominent leaders of the rebellion in the original films. Did we ever even see a male of equal rank?

This looks bad for the exact same reasons that so much of WDW is lackluster right now. If you look at this mess and say, “well, clearly this is the fault of women,” that says immensely more about you then about Disney.

You mean full of women that are going to look a heck of alot better than I can in a dress lol? Honestly how do some women have time to look so made up on a vacation that, by looking at the itinerary, is enough time for me to get a quick shower and dry my hair?
