One million dollars a day is a lot of money to be making at the box office a month after release. A lot of people on this forum seem to be clueless on how successful of a film this is. Just because it’s not “Star Wars climax successful” doesn’t mean it’s still not a massive success.

I'd be curious to see when it's all said and done....what the actual budget (cost) was. Factoring in marketing, the rumored re-shoots, etc..
I don't think it's going to lose money at the end of the day...but it definitely is not going to live up to expectations and be the money machine Disney hoped for. Which will impact investors and cause Disney to lose money. What I take out of it is - that it will directly lead to Kennedy stepping down. Hopefully.

In THAT story...

Are we saying every acting job is the same? Every movie has the same requirements?

I missed the lightsaber scene in When Harry Met Sally 😳
Don’t move the goalposts to an entire different argument.

This was what I was directly responding to:

For an indie film on Netflix about marriage troubles...

Anyone having to carry Scarjo...who is borderline awful...should get an Oscar

I made mention that she is outstanding and has a strong case to win Best Actress in Marriage Story, and that Driver is indeed excellent as well. Both actors work wonderfully together and make each other better.

Don’t change the point to “well, but she wouldn’t be good in other stuff because roles are different”. That’s a bad pivot, and wasn’t a point I was trying to make at all.

Here's the WSJ's take:

If I'm Kennedy, I'm looking forward to retirement about now.

She can make up some more shirts "Retirement is Female". On the backside: "I Ruined Star Wars"
Her twin sister can make one up as well: "I'm not Kathleen...She's just my sister...And I'm mad at her too"

Honestly, Rian Johnson is probably happy as a clam right now. His "Knives Out" has received near-unanimous praise and is doing very well money wise in relation to its budget, and is likely a major Oscar contender.

Meanwhile JJ's attempt to "fix" Star Wars is going down in flames and even if Rian's blamed, he's already cashed his directing cheque.

Yuck. Or maybe he just force projected his sperm...

I don't know if that's any less disgusting.

Maybe this would have worked better as XXX movie. You may be on to something......."The Rise of Skywalker" ---- The more I think about it. Yeah. I think it could work .

I agree.

For me the biggest issue with the disney trilogy is that it didn’t deliver what was promised. The original announcement made people believe that luke and co would be front and centre but instead we got a set of new characters with the original cast tacked on.

Luke in particular was treated very badly in these movies absent, character destroyed, cameo when he could easily have played an obi wan / yoda role. Even vader was treated poorly the chosen one who brings balance to the force only features as a melted mask

i would have preferred these movies to just feature the new cast rather than what we got

  • The Last Jedi was at $1,791,497 on day 25
  • It first went below 1m on day 34
  • Then continued with over 1m day weekends, beyond this point peaking on a $3,168,473 day
  • It fell permanently below 1m days on day 52
Statistically speaking by expected ratios with it's initial opening weekend, opening week, and subsequent daily box office it hit these marks the same as any other similar movie.

I worded that wrong...

You’re numbers are correct...the $1.7 is the number target where it became irrelevant.

Boy...now that I look at it again...it really did underperform. Didn’t make much really at all considering the momentum from 7 coming in...

Hmmm

You’re arguing this to argue...

The posters opinion was that Adam driver wasn’t the right person for these movies...I generally think he’s a good actor otherwise. That’s a fair opinion.

And I actually liked him in Star Wars...thought he did a good job with a bad hand dealt to him.

Boy...we got way off course here.

$2 Billion in Momentum. I saw it 4 times in the theater. TLJ one painful time. I'm on viewing #1 for IX....but I admit - I'll probably go again in a week (Twice as many times as I saw TLJ - haven't even watched it again at home....cause - (bombs in space, Leia Poppins and Jake Skywalker). So at least there's that.

It underperformed, but let’s be clear here: it still made $175 million over the weekend. Despite disappointing, claiming that it isn’t selling or nobody is seeing it is such a gross exaggeration that such boasts can’t be taken seriously.

Additionally, just as an education, theatres really don’t call the shots regarding what they show. Given Disney’s tyrannical control over its properties and the leverage it possesses, they negotiate everything with theatres: percentage of grosses over time, minimum number/percentage of screens per theatre, number of showing per day per theatre, minimum theatre size (seats per screening) and most important, minimum number of weeks the theatre is required to show the film in the previously mentioned terms.

Failure to adhere to those can result in the loss of the film license, as well as access to future film‘s under the Disney banner.

Since the theatre system’s most prominent distributor is Disney, they hold almost all leverage. Theatres don’t really get to call the shots.
Now we’re way off the map...talking about licenses and retribution.

Is your contention Disney will keep the movie in theaters at gunpoint?
That’d be great.

Here’s what we can predict about that $176

There’s a formula that doesn’t deviate much:

Opening weekend x 3 = total domestic gross = $528,000,000

Disney Star Wars pulls around 45% of its total worldwide from domestic...

$528/0.45 = $1,147,000,000

That’s the number. And that’s IF it isn’t hurt by bad buzz and the critics...IF.

So thats down 14% from the last Johnson and 44% from the farce awakens...

That’s smashing success...Disney Magic, Baby!

Just finished seeing it for the second time - first in 3D - and it looks amazing in 3D.

It’s a very good finish to the sequel trilogy and the saga as a whole. It’s not a perfect movie, but none of the movies are, and I consider the original trilogy my three favorite movies of all time. But they are all flawed, and that’s ok. I can accept that and still love them. I choose not to focus on the flaws and enjoy them for what they are, great stories that are targeted to the kid in all of us.

This movie is no different. It’s a wonderful romp through the galaxy I grew up loving that Is emotional, fun and entertaining.

I find it very interesting that most of those here bashing it are the same people who were bashing it for the past 2 years. What a surprise.

As for the box office, it will likely pass both Rogue One and Phantom Menace and go on to be the 2nd (Not sure it can catch The Lat Jedi) or 3rd highest grossing Star Wars movie. I am sure Disney is quite content with that.

And just for fun, here’s my ranking of the movies. For the record, I enjoy all of these except Attack of the Clones.

A New Hope
Empire Strikes Back
Return of the Jedi
The Force Awakens
The Rise of Skywalker
Revenge of the Sith
Rogue One
Solo
The Last Jedi
The Phantom Menace
Attack of the Clones

“Adjusted for inflation”

It’s currently tracking to be the third worst gross of a Star Wars movie ADJUSTED (dollars change in value and the international market changes over time) domestic...

Only ahead of solo and attack of the clones.

I can only assume that you don’t study Disney much if you believe they will be “quite pleased” with that?

It will give minions a run for its money though...gonna be tight 😉
