Immediate reactions:
  • I heart Doctor Strange's cloak (always have from its first appearance onscreen)
  • Messing with Happy is just a big ol' hell no. BLAM!
  • Better Bucky art this time around
  • Chadwick's last lines about death made me teary
  • Very abrupt what just happened ending
  • This is all too damn dark (though they at least tried to add some humor this time) - hope they lighten it up or it's going to be too depressing to watch

Alright, we got confirmation that this week's What If? is "What If Killmonger Rescued Tony Stark?" I'm gonna guess the change here is T'Chaka not leaving behind Killmonger, who becomes a War Dog.

The episodes are interesting, but its definitely veering for dark for my tastes. One of the main reasons I love the MCU is because it embraces all squeaky clean hope and optimism and heroisms of funny books aimed at 8 year olds with power fantasies. I get the urge to play with some more grim concepts in a "safe" space (where it doesn't impact anything) with What If? but it would be nice if we could get more episodes where some happy things happen.

The last two have felt like they abruptly just ended.

Although this one feels strangely poetic and foreshadowing. This was made before Chadwick Boseman's death or after? I sort of expect a Pepper - Shuri team up in the real timeline too.

I also wonder if there will be some sort of interconnected finale episode to pick up a few plot threads, or if the Watcher does something.

My immediate reactions:
  • Michael B. Jordan is beautiful even when animated
  • Why does Shuri look 12 years old here?
  • So in this reality, T'Challa became Black Panther without the death of his father prompting the role assumption.
  • I'm getting worn out from how dark this show is. At least this one had a somewhat hopeful, if as seems common to this series - abrupt - ending.

It’s like the writers were tasked with killing Tony in as many different ways as possible.
It may be a clear signal that they're not bringing Cap (Steve Rogers version) and Iron Man back thru the comicky convention of 'parallel universe' as some fans had hoped/speculated.

This episode is happening in roughly the same timeframe as the first Iron Man movie, which puts it several years before we see Shuri in Black Panther.
Iron Man was released in 2008 and Black Panther in 2018. In BP, Shuri was supposed to be 16 or 18 (depending on who you're asking). So she'd either be 6 or 8 during Iron Man, not 12. I don't recall if we saw T'Challa's face in this ep, but Killmonger definitely looked BP-era to me, not a decade younger. (If you want to assume Killmonger is MBJ's age, then he was 31 during BP and only 21 during IM.)

My point was, the ages portrayed didn't make sense together.

But I also want to mention that I loved Ramonda being head of the Dora Milaje. Man, I'd've loved to have seen Angela Bassett kick butt in that scene in live action!

Supposedly Iron Man is set in 2010 and Black Panther 2016. So that still tracks.

The movies aren't set exactly when they were released. I guess most of the current Phase 4 crop take place in 2023.

Is anyone else's Ep. 8 (Ultron?) audio not working properly?

I have tried to watch it on two different TVs, two different AppleTV, with different types of speaker systems, yet the background is WAY too loud and the voice (center channel) is whispering. All other shows, apps, music, even Ep. 7, work properly.

EDIT: This appears to be an issue viewing the episode on the AppleTV hardware's app, as it works fine when I use the basic D+ smart TV app.

^ I had connectivity issues watching online the last two eps and had to stop and start multiple times to get them to play. And neither was right during the ep drop/release so it wasn't the timing. I find the site quite fussy.

My thoughts on the last two episodes:

Loved Party Thor for so many reasons -
  • first and foremost because there was finally (for the most part) an upbeat instead of dark and depressing episode
  • SO MANY CHARACTERS from the MCU in this one
  • LOTS of my darling Darcy (though sadly no Selvig)
  • And one of the best Loki variants I've ever seen - Frost Giant Loki! Seeing Loki jovial and content in his life and in his true self filled my heart with happy. Just a wonderful version of him. And it felt like Hiddles was having fun playing this version of the character.
Ultron -
  • oh goodie - more dark, depressing and death again :p
  • Still I have SUCH respect for Ross Marquand - not only does he manage a pitch perfect Red Skull, but he does a solid Ultron, too! He doesn't just study the sound of their voices and accents, but the rhythm of their speech which is so key. Damn, man. Work that Marvel villain magic!
But I'm kinda bummed they're tying these stories together. Was enjoying having something simply anthology/standalone.
