I’m saying that I’m not a fan of what Harris did. That’s all. I don’t think his writings should be destroyed, never read, etc. I have both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s in English. I don’t support and will never support banning books. I just wrote a thesis on how to go about teaching one of the most notorious books in American literature history in college courses. I have studied a bit of Harris and the Uncle Remus Tales. I don’t approve of what Harris did, but his work has a place in both American history and American literature history. Again, I have no plans to ever get rid of my personal copy and would teach the Uncle Remus Tales for a course if I ever got the chance.
That is nice to hear as an English Teacher myself.
I am just of the mindset that capitalism or similar enough situations just did not exist in cultures for a long time and if given the chance those cultures would have more published versions, but it is not wrong that other cultures did not do it the same way when oral traditions were the way there. Obviously not during JCH's time but If someone comes and does a better more relevant version of those stories, they will win that popularity and financial game. I understand what you are saying now about the opinion part. My take is It tends to work with whoever does it best at a certain point.
Ultimately that is why Walt Disney, this white American Guy has the most popular versions of most of these stories. His teams did the best versions of the cultural eternal truths.
I guess for me that is why Splash Mountain ultimately should stay. It is the American Mythology that Disney's hub connected lands have been. Hard truths in all.
And it is more insulting to many people in my opinion, even those who dislike Song lf The South and Uncle Remus Strongly, that it is changing for similar reasons that Maelstrom and The Living Season changed.
Sounds like an impressive thesis!
