They are not having the best run recently. Guardians opening date spilled by their head communications guy, and now this one. This is one of the risks they run when there are projects lingering around for years and years on the sidelines.

I think there is definitely something to be said about how it used to go. Say nothing until construction is underway, and then let us know what is happening, and have a rapid opening within the following 12 to 24 months.
I've been saying this for a bit, their PR game has noticeably slipped over the past 2 years. From unprofessional statements ("guest wastelines") to that guy just dropping the GotG date casually. It really seems like once Zenia left everything went downhill hard. The company now has a hard time with spinning negative PR into positive, something they used to do really well.

They can't keep their mouths shut, they can't keep their attractions working, they can't keep their parks clean, the only thing they can do well is charge people more.

I think it has definitely got harder to manage in recent years. There are so many opportunities for people to say things they shouldn't - looking at social media in particular. But in this case, it was on a major TV show, which you would have thought would have been prepped.

That in addition to the fact it was on a TV show when prompted by a host who is on their payroll as it is on a network wholly owned by their company. They could have preempted this entire media “story” and not jumped the shark had they wanted to.

I don’t understand why this is so difficult for them to just have a general statement about how “An official timeline will be announced very soon. We know are guests are excited to hear more about this we’re excited to announce more details about this new attraction soon, too”. Instead of a condescending “as we already told you…”

Because they know it's an astounding swing in the other direction.

If a closure of Splash for WDW for a 2024 reopening, my hunch is it will close soon after Tron opens. That would be a 1 for 1. Bonus: You get the train for a ride to Casey’s Circus and a quick walk to Tron.

Yes, I increasingly get the feeling I put more thought into the wording of my work emails than Disney does into their official PR statements.

A random thought:
I've heard people saying that Splash is very hard to maintain. Which explains it's current condition.
For me, that begs the question. Will they bite the bullet and suddenly turn that attitude around for the PATF version? Or will they make changes to the attraction and show building to make it easier to maintain. Or just remove certain AAs and swap in screens/projection mapping to make it easier?

The way they maintain the current version scares me enough.
Since the mid 90s, animatronics have been on the endangered species list. We've lost armies of them with the closures of World of Motion, Horizons, Universe of Energy, Great Movie Ride etc. Splash has 50-60 AA's (DL a few moreso than WDW). I have no doubt that most if not all are going bye bye and it won't reopen with anywhere close to as many. It'll be predominantly video-based per usual.

As I said some pages back, I and a few others were cautioned that Visionary Soul and EagleScout610 were making false claims about the project's status. Unfortunately this warning turned out to be correct. I take no credit as i'm not the source and i'm not at all happy it ended up being true. Apparently Splash will be going down almost immediately after Tron opens (the claim being 2023). It was also previously stated by this source that the budget is absolutely anemic. So I would suggest to buckle up and prepare for the worst here...

While this isn't backed up by anything other than my own opinion and common sense, I'm calling BS on PATF opening 2024. The timeline is absurd to me, even if they closed the ride sometime this year. It took them almost 2 years between Maelstrom and Frozen. No matter how pathetic the budget and effort is for PATF, it's going to require FAR more time to complete than Maelstrom.

I would just look at a recent example of a ride with plenty of "physical" effects. In this case I'll talk about ROTR (WDW version) in its current state today since it opened about 3 years ago.
  • All three pre-show BB-8's still operate normally regularly.
  • All three Lt. Bek AA's also operates normally.
  • Probe droid was recently fixed after being broken for months (Nov 2021)
  • Spinning blasters in AT-AT room were broken almost immediately after opening in Dec 2019. Fixed about 5 months later. Still working today.
  • Both Finn AA's still move and bob their heads.
  • Likewise, the two hand-blasters also still move and fire.
  • AT-AT blasters (track A) still rotates and moves as you climb the elevator and escape.
  • Lighted ceiling tubes that simulate the AT-AT blasters trails still light up in both tracks.
  • Bridge Kylo and Hux AA's still motion and move.
  • Projected Kylo with physical saber still walks towards your RV. There are times when this goes into B-mode (Kylo just drops down but doesn't walk towards you), but this is usually quickly fixed.
  • Lightsaber effect in "elevator-down" works regularly. Usually if this breaks, it's fixed within days.
  • Cannons are all motionless. Last seen in B-mode-lite, where only first cannon moves, in Dec 2021. Last A-mode I believe was October 2021. Since then, complete B-mode and supposedly no fix in sight.
  • Final Kylo AA works regularly in A-mode as of recent. If it breaks, it's down for a couple days in B-mode then working again.
  • 3 physical props that move/fall after the Star Destroyer's hull breaks:
    • Main piece that covers Kylo. Obviously this piece has to move/fall in order for scene to remain in A-mode.
    • Hanging tube next to Kylo. This also still moves. There was a period months after opening when it stopped moving, but it's been fixed since.
    • Ceiling vent above Kylo. This no longer falls. As far as I can remember, it stopped moving sometime before March 2020/closure.
  • Wind effect still happens, as long final Kylo scene is in A-mode.
  • Lt. Bek AA at unload still moving. There was a day or two when he was missing a couple months ago, presumably for maintenance.
While the only thing that really jumps out is the cannons, maintenance/TDO has been maintaining the ride pretty good. My only complaint is fixes sometimes takes very long. The blasters in the AT-AT room should not have taken like half a year to fix. And the cannon situation is simply unacceptable since that was like the best show scene in the ride.

Then again, ROTR only really has like 12 AA's, excluding the storm troopers in the hanger preshow room. Splash is on a whole another level (and I guess water doesn't help).

To reiterate what I said regarding the date being BS, remember when Avatar land was opening in 2015?

Sorry to shorten your post, but I do want to report that several things on your list were broken a week ago when I rode it. The physical saber on the Kylo Ren drop down projection was broken and hanging very incorrectly. The final Kylo Ren AA was also broken. I didn't notice any movement on the ATAT's either, and some of the projections for blaster fire seemed to be missing. It's possible they've been fixed by now, but the maintenance across WDW entirely has been very poor lately due to corporate greed tightening the budget noose.

Rise is still new and has less physical elements to go wrong in the first place as you said.

To be fair, she did say she was involved early in the project and my guess is that back in 2020, 2024 was the actual projected date. A lot has changed since then. I doubt she is involved very much, if at all, in the project (whatever state it may be in). Anecdotally, people I know say "not so fast." Imagineering can be kind of a black box though, so grain of salt.
