Why in earth would Tokyo do anything right now?

They can sit back and see how the ride turns out.

If it’s somehow a better attraction then splash, then I wouldn’t be surprised if they copy it.

Since the odds of it being a masterpiece are low, I would say Tokyo splash is safe.
OLC is not thrilled about PatF because it's a largely unknown property in Japan.

There is nothing offensive about Splash Mountain. Since Disney has purged SotS for a while now, nobody except avid Disney fans even know it exists. The uneducated mob only targeted it because Disney brought negative attention on themselves. If Disney just shut up and didn’t say anything then there wouldn’t be any trouble and life would be better for everyone involved.
There was a growing awareness of SotS since the launch of Disney Plus (with articles asking if SotS would be on the service) and Karina Longworth's six-part exploration of the movie in her "You Must Remember This" Podcast. She had an entire episode dedicated to Splash Mountain and how Disney continued to profit off of Song of the South even after banning it. Her podcast and teardown of SOTS got a lot of media attention.

It's much more complicated than that even. The ride is really popular over there as is. It's considered very 'kawaii' (cutesy), which is very popular in Japan even among the most burliest of men (masculinity in Japan is a whole other discussion). They literally see zero benefit in changing something so popular when the perceived issues are largely not understood, and from their perspective, not relevant to them.

Whether the argument is valid or not I make not judgement on, just vocalizing their view point. Racial issues in Japan are more complicated than one in the US might imagine. They don't understand the problems with SotS because...well for a lot of reasons. General lack of racial diversity in the population, not really being exposed to racial issues abroad, and the majority view in Japan that there exist two types of people: Japanese and 'Not Japanese'. (Oversimplified, but when you're in Tokyo if you aren't Japanese, you just aren't.) Despite all this, they have quite a complicated history with race even within the geography of Japan. The forced assimilation of the Ainu and the Ryukyuan people leave a complicated history and understanding of who and what makes up the Japanese people and culture.

Curious question for you:

If someone is not BIPOC on a certain topic that pertains to those groups but they put in much research into said topic and represent everything as truthfully as possible, do you find a problem with that?
I have a very serious issue with people specifically going after topical issues of marginalized people and profiting off them. There is a certain degree of respectful interaction and understanding that you're a guest in the space, as well as respect for the people it pertains to. None of that is happening with that podcast. They specifically used the birthday of James Baskett to garner monetized clicks. Monetization of these issues is an immediate red flag. Inserting themselves into conversations, especially ones that are sensitive topics (esp. pertaining to POC pain) are also a dead give away. I am sick of Black and Indigenous pain being for sale.

How the incompetent management bit off more than they could chew and hopefully they are absolutely positively forced to cancel the retheme? I'm waiting for the insider post LOL At least in my dreams.
Is this going to be as involved and complex as the Indiana Jones Adventure when it opened at Disneyland in 1995? Are we getting a secret code to unlock from McDonald's?! Are we getting an extended queue with booby-trapped sections?! Like WHAT IS THE HOLD UP?! I have no feelings about the retheme itself either way, I just want for whatever does happen to be good, you know?!

and that's exactly what it comes down to. I still think we will see it done and open in Cali, before it ever happens here.

I assume California will certainly be the easier of the two; they've already started to extend and blend the lands (with that weird Pelican Landing eating space the Imagineers took selfies with, because THAT's not cringe!). It's a much smaller-scaled attraction with more intimate show scenes (and what honestly feel like more dynamic track layouts, but that is a personal preference). I don't think they anticipated how much different the attractions are developing the same story for the two the same way that Splash is the same story told very differently, but essentially the same. They can take all the time they need if it's going to be good, but it just feels like they're floundering.

I'm a big fan of Henry Louis Gates. I'm not sure what your point with this is at all. And, accusing me of tokenizing and cherry picking MLK smacks of name calling. I certainly didn't do that to you.

The point is: Anyone can -- and should -- speak up for the inequities we see in society today. But, I'd posit that arguing over a log flume ride that's derived from a 75 year old movie isn't the way to right those wrongs. My quoting of MLK was to illustrate we need to be color-blind when talking to each other. Sorry if that caused you to think I'm racist for not caring the color of ones skin when discussing race.
The problem is is that the people whom this effects the most and who actually need to be heard, are not and cannot be heard. There is no balance. If people cared so much about these issues, they would give the people who need to be heard the most the space to talk about it.

Edit: I just thought about something. The reason why we're even having this problem in the first place is because Joel Chandler Harris used Black and Indigenous coded stories of resistance for his own self-insert fan fiction. 😵‍💫
