Spider-Man to Join Marvel Films

Of course, if he plays the part he would play in the comic, it would require a fair amount of faith that the movie buying public would buy his previous film experiences as part of his current incarnation, or the fact that he's been operating for quite some time in the MCU without mention in any of the previous MCU films. Otherwise his part in the story doesn't hold the same emotional impact and could serve as a distraction in the film rather than an important plot point.
I thought about the same thing. If they really want to use him the same way, perhaps they'll set it up with Spider-Man being the subject of the post-credit stinger in Ant-Man.

Here's my comment from the Spirited thread. Personally, I think BP will still fill Spidey's comic role.

I agree, as his duel role as BP and monarch of Wakanda make him much more high profile in the MCU than Spidey is likely to be at that point.

I'm placing my bet on Spidey filling in the role of the New Warriors at the beginning (teenage superheroes that botch a villain takedown, causing massive amounts of property damage and civilian casualties), thereby prompting the Superhero Registration Act.

The film could start with him post-spider bite but pre-"Great Power and Responsibility". Instead of wanting to be a wrestler, have this iteration of Pete be inspired by the Avengers to be a SH out the gate; however, he lacks the maturity and training to be effective. Have him battle one his lesser foes we haven't seen yet that wouldn't take significant amount of time to explain (Kraven, Scorpion, Shocker, Vulture), and the resulting carnage (which Uncle Ben dies in) sets the CW story down it's path, as well as Pete's in his subsequent solo film.

Feige won't let this suck.

I also think after the whole Sony hack, they could going above and beyond to bring themselves back into the favor of the community (though im sure other studios are capable of the same thing). What better way than to team up with one of the other superhero studios and give the people something they've wanted for a long time?

It was stated in the press release that he will first be introduced in one of the Marvel movies before his solo movie in 2017. The only likely candidate would be Captain America: Civil War (or possibly Guardians 2 if it's just a post-credits scene).

Hopefully it won't just be an post-credits scene, but probably will be.

The only negative about this news is that Amy Pascal is still involved.

I think the real message here is that the Marvel and Sony teams both agreed that Avi Arad was a problem for the on-going success of Spiderman. And that Marvel wasn't going to let Sony co-finance Spidey pics with another studio or financier.

It's just about confirmed it's going to be Civil War.

It could realistically be Dr. Strange based on the timeline, but it would make more sense for Civil War. I do think that Spidey is just going to be a bit character, though, in that film just to introduce him to the MCU.

I hope they don't try to cram an origin story for him if he indeed does show up in Civil War. We all know his origin and if someone doesn't they can watch ASM or the original spiderman, those are both very good movies.

That quote earlier makes perfect sense of him taking the place of the New Warriors. Although could he still have as big of a role in the storyline like he did in the comics?

Judging by some of the clips that have been released for Age of Ultron the animosity between Stark and Cap is well underway. If you haven't seen it there is a clip of them splitting wood together... If you want to see it you can find it very easily on google. And since there are two new gifted people suddenly showing up out of the blue in AoU it makes me wonder if they will gloss over the New Warriors part and the superhero registration act is already started due to the events in AoU. Im sure it will begin to show up on AoS before the movie as well.

I think that he will show up in Civil War, they were dead set on getting him after they had already announced Black Panther was in the movie. Im guessing that they knew how close they were to getting him so they prepared two versions of the movie, one with him and one without. With how smoothly Marvel Studios has been running (Exception to Ant-Man here, that was a mess) they can make the switch between having him and not having him without much trouble.

I think it just as likely he could show up in Age of Ultron's stinger. They can turn those around pretty quickly (the Schwarma scene was added crazy fast if I remember), and I think that Cap 3 was scheduled to start filming in April. If they cast Spidey quickly, they could throw him in an Av2 stinger as a proper introduction.

AoU's stinger(s) are already filmed, one of them is with Loki and Heimdall, the other has been speculated. I think it involves Thanos. Josh Brolin came on stage with the rest of the cast of AoU at comic con, maybe a not so subtle nod to him making an appearance somewhere in the film.

Now I think Ant-Man would be a good possibility, especially since Civil War is the next film up.

I suspect you may be on to something there. The timing of the announcement has to mean something, it isn't exactly for Sony's or Amy Pascal's benefit. Earnings are released, Amy has been 'not renewed', it is likely they are doing this because they knew Marvel Studios activity on Spider-Man would leak very quickly. So Marvel is about to do something with Spider-Man and given the timing it is likely something to do with AoU.

Didn't Sony use ILM for Amazing Spider-Man, so it isn't as if the digital assets for Spider-Man are sitting conveniently near the Avengers digital assets. (Of course they keep all of that well separated...but you know someone has Iron Man fighting Optimus Prime fighting Darth Vader somewhere at ILM)

Since Spidey plays a massive part in the comic book version of Civil War, it seems it would make sense to have him in Cap 3.
(this next part is trying hard to be un-spoilery whilst still discussing something of interest to me)

Also, that would make his standalone film very interesting, depending on if they decided to let Doctor Strange play the Mephisto part to McGuffin his Civil War actions away, or if they let his standalone film exist in a post-Civil War world for him to deal with the ramifications.

Hope that was vague enough to be non-spoiler.

I don't think the plot of MCU Civil War will be based on secret identities since literally no one in the MCU actually HAS a secret identity.

I guess you are right. I don't think it's public knowledge that Hulk is Bruce Banner, but other than that, Black Widow did the whole data dump thing at the end of Cap 2, Hawkeye has no mask, Iron Man is well known as Stark, so it's pretty much all out in the open.

Great point.

Well, it's not clear how they will be incorporated into the movies, but the Netflix series heroes (Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, etc) might have secret identities.

I don't expect a ton of crossover in and out of the Netflix series. Hardcore fans will get to see them as part of the integrated universe but they can't put too much weight on the shows or they'll confuse the casual movie audience.
