Spaceship Earth Refurbishment Progress

I think i have found the main feature of the New Siemens Post Show. Now, I have no proof that this will be the feature but it sure looks like it to me. Siemens has developed "Video Paper".

This stuff looks so cool, and they annouced the devlopment of this stuff about the same time as they announced the Sponsorship of SSE. Sponsoring a paviloin about communication and advances in communication would be a great way to bring this stuff to market(imho).

This does look neat, but can you imagine what grocery shopping will be like when it takes hold on store shelves? And just think of what you'll get in the mail!

Revamp...on the way.
Large...eh, not so much. Large enough.

Well I mean...that idea of turning Spaceship Earth into a rocket rods-style thrill ride sounded kind of fun but if it was going to be done in the same vein as Test Track and mission space I think I, and most people, would prefer the slow moving omnimover attraction with AA's. As long as they make some positive changes and improvements throughout the attraction to make it feel fresh again.

merf, thanks for the report.

i will confirm the same story out of the CM that i bugged during the week i was visiting. he gave me the same spiel about the network tree was so ingrained in the structure that it is taking a long time to get it out....... then i proceeded to make a joke that he didnt seem to be amused by.

I said since it was taking them so long, they havent seen me demo anything. id probably be done within the weekend.... but the building might collaspe.

he just stared at me...... alrighty then. ill be on my way now.

Is there going to be anything really major going on here? Or just a general sprucing up/small effects updates?

I haven't got much info to share at this point. I do know, as do most here, that the post show is being totally reworked.

Word I get is that the ride to the first room and ride down from the top will be changed quite a bit. The main portion of the ride would just get a refurbishment. At least that was the word I got a month or so ago.

IMO, that's the best possible thing that could happen. Hope you're right Lee.

Yep, the Siemens reps loved the classic SSE and were only interested in changing the beginning and updating the end of the current attraction.

No word on whether or not "Tomorrow's Child" will return; according to someone in the meetings, Siemens wants the song, but that doesn't mean that it's actually going to come back. Frankly, if the song does return, I hope that Disney records it again. The original vocals sound like a bad 80s nightmare now (yet the orchestration is still gorgeous).

Here's a few questions to whomever can answer them...

1.Since Siemens loves the classic SSE, what are their views on the big wand? Any updates on that?

2. How has the beginning changed the last few times? What was it originally? Marni?

That would be AWESOME! And you are right they would definitely have to record it again. Just putting the song back in as it was would not be a good move. But a remake of the song with a spectacular new ending would please fans of EPCOT Center and newcomers to the attraction, as long as it wasn't a simple rehash of what was there pre-94.

The wand won't go anywhere for a while. Not unless plans suddenly change for an anniversary, but I haven't heard anything on that front yet.

Obviously there were no warnings in the ascent tube, and no video images. Guess people wern`t as stupid! Originally there were no stars hanging from the ceiling; the entire tunnel was pitch black apart from the (regular) lighning bolt flash animations. What changed the most was the fog; the Perrin version had think fog all the way up to dawn of time - so thick you couldn`t see the car infront of you. The Cronkite version was more of a mist, but still thick enough to hide the dawn of time until you actual arrived at the 52ft level. Both versions also had an eiree, non musical soundtrack in this section too.

ahhh yes. interesting how with time, you forget these little details.

i wish that all the AA's would get replaced with the new AA's (jack sparrow). especially in the theater scene. the actor that is speaking sure has a funky bend in his elbow (seen in the positioning of his hand)

The soundtrack, from what I recall (I could be off or recalling something else entirely) was like radio noise... The idea that signals traveling from earth (the point of origin) move at a contastant speed and the further you move from earth - the older the transmission you'll be able to pick up. So, as you ascend, the signals got older.. you picked up bits of speeches amid static and music and voices and such. "I have a dream.." and "Ask not what your country can do for you.." and "One small step for man.." and other noteable words could b glimpsed as you went up.

This is still my favorite attraction in all of Epcot and I am so excited to see it getting refurbed. Here are my suggestions of what I'd like to see done.

1.) Remove the wand. It totally ruins the aesthetics of the building and what it doesn't kill, the graveyard out front does.

2.) Work on the ride system by smoothing out the bumps and knocking sounds in the system and add some sort of padding to the cars.

3.) Change the opening and ending to the ride a bit and put some good closing song at the end even if it's not Tomorrow's Child.

4.) Work on all the animatronics in the ride. They don't all need to be the jack sparrow kind, but seeing some video recently of what they looked like when the ride first opened, they sure moved a lot smoother than they do now.

5.) Bring a great, exciting postshow about communication and Siemen's role in it to the end. I miss the great postshows to rides. That just doesn't seem to happen much anymore.

That would certainly cover it :)

About number 3, while I would love to hear a reworked Tomorrow's Child in there, I also agree that it isn't the only way. However, I am a big fan of the musical score that is in the ending now.

I'd like to see them pony up the budget and remove the entire current vehicle set, fix the track (replace sections if needed) and then put in a new vehicle set/system that is cushy/comfortable with a nice futuristic modern look. Something with padding, a headrest, and maybe a cup holder (kidding about the cup holder).
