Ok...somebody let me know where those photos are.

Edit: Got it! Thanks:wave:

So? Any reaction or is this as you expected? I guess I just never expected to see stuff being lowered through the roof of Space Mountain .

And the dumpster getting lowered in is hilarious.

I have a lot of artifacts and would love a small section of the structure (who on this site wouldnt right?). Even an few inches of the metal would be sufficient. If anyone gets a hold of a few pieces, id be happy to pay shipping :D

A few in my collection include a wooden seat (bench seats football stadium built in 1926) of the Legion Field in Bham, a small section (6 inches wide) of the original trolley car rail line that ran through Bham that is from roughly 1907 and a few other nick-nacks. One of my favorites is an american flag that is in the shape of a elongated triangle. Supposedly in WW1 or WW2 they were placed in the mast of sunken ships to indicate that the Allies sunk them (Im no historian so my facts are bad)

I think some SM metal would fit in nicely between them.

Eh...I guess I'm kinda surprised that they would go in that way...don't see the need.
Otherwise...I'd like some better shots of what's going in/out and like to determine if it's is actually going in or just being put onto the roof.
To my knowledge, there isn't a big hole up there for access...unless they cut one. But why bother?

Could it be for the new post-show?

I don't understand the embargo on the site that
has the pictures, but I'm sorta new and don't want
to step on any toes.

That having been said, this link takes you to a page
that links to the page that has the photos. That's sorta
like how the internets tubes work, with a dose of Kevin
Bacon thrown in for protective measures.

Hope that's OK, I know folks wanna see the pics. Just tryin' to help!

The only thing I can think is that the intend to lower in items that are too big to go through the access doors. Which would mean some pretty big items since the doors are fairly large. Or it could be they are just redoing the roof. I guess the proof will be if we see them removing items through the roof at some point. That crane is costing them a lot of money I know that.

I'm glad to see they have a crane. That means steel is coming out and going in. Workers can't carry steel due to its weight so it makes sense to have the crane.

This makes me feel even more positive.

Nice! Timekeeper's head is great. If only Stitch would pick choice C.

Perhaps the reason for going in through the roof with a crane is that it seems to be far more inefficient and far more costly, and they need to justify the budget.

Perhaps they are installing these guys, and to make them
feel at home, they have added "The Claw".

Oh, I see the pictures now. I wouldn`t get too excited. To me it looks either like exterior work is to commence, or infrastructure work on the roof.

Basically, SM has a flat roof. Behind the curved tip is a lower roof - the real roof level. Up there are transmission devices since one - or more - of the spires are actually aerials.

The actual hatch spaces on the roof are not that large. There is an equipment `scuttle` (look east on live locals birds eye view to see it) but since it`s around 9ft square it would be a laborious, not to mention hazardous, way to get things in and out. That`s what the ground level berm doors were added for. There is also a smaller scuttle and some AC outlet vents.

You're right Martin, it's equipment type work. The other stuff is going on at ground level.

I just watched that Space Mountain Opening ceremony video.

Thanks for posting that link. I can actually remember sitting in
front of the TV breathlessly watching that. Yup, that dates
me for sure.

I remember when they finally got to showing the ride, with the
cars superimposed on the starfield, and I said "no way, that's just
special effects, that's not the real ride", and I was kinda ticked off, lol.

Didn't get to ride it until 1988 after that! It is/was better than the
video, lol.

Hopin' for a good refurb!

Forgive me for not knowing how to post a photo on here.

But if you go to http://maps.live.com --- find Space Mountain on the map --- and then select "Birds Eye"--- zoom in--- and then use the rotate buttons until you're looking at the mountain from the west side.

From that angle, you can see what appears to be some sort of rectangular box inside the "cup". Is that a roof access hatch? I would imagine they'd need one so powerwashing crews could get up there.

But that hatch does not look large enough to pass equipment through.

I wonder if they cut a hole in the roof nearby to have quicker access. (the cost of opening and repairing the roof is probably cheaper than the time and labor of slowly bringing it all in thru a side door. ). I vaguely remember DL cutting open the roof to Star Tours about 12 years ago to lift out and replace all the vehicles, so it has been done before.

But knowing the top of the track inclines sit just a few feet below that "cup" makes mr wonder how much track has been dismantled in order to get the crane-lowered materials into the building.
