Space Mountain closing for short refurbishment in January 2016

It's in desperate need of a refresh on the film/CGI. Those effects haven't aged well.

You're not wrong, but I can't possibly fathom Disney shelling out the money to do this, ever.

It would be a good candidate for glasses-less 3D too, since the riders' head positions are fixed, but that ain't happening in our lifetimes.

It already has parallax shift. Probably as good as we will get to glassesless 3D.

However, the screens vary in quality from average to dire. All the cabin displays need replacing.

A new video and ride sequence would be great. Also, different lighting and a better interactive board could really enhance the ride experience. But, they can't change the pre-show....unles they get Gary Sinise to reprise his role!

Just going off the original specs and personal experience.

Got a link to those specs?
I'm going to be really impressed if I'm wrong here, but I think it's just a fresnel lens between you and the screen and not a true parallax barrier display.

These dates come direct from Disney and are subject to change. This is one of many newly published refurbishments and I want to get the information out there for all planning their trips.

Space Mountain is scheduled for refurbishment from Jan 11-15, 2016. Being this far out, dates are subject to change or cancellation. Just a heads up to all.

Sorry for bringing this thread back but where does Disney post this information? I can't find any information on space mountain being closed. I called Disney and they also said they had no information about it being closed on these dates. I checked their website and can see splash mountain being closed on the same exact dates. Would they really close both rides at the same time? Thanks for the help

I too am curious why they would close both at the same time. We will be there Jan. 10-17. Allears has Splash closure as Jan 6-10. I trust this site more, but I hope they're correct on this one.

Came across this great video and it gave me so many feels. Really loved the FedEx era SM... I forgot how much has changed since then, even the small things like the used car salesman ad playing was so much fun! I also really miss the narration for the scenes as you're on the moving platform to exit the ride. "In the future, packages will be sent by beams of light!"

These were posted for travel agents. They released a huge list of 2016 closures, then the next day redacted all the info for 2016 and have slowly re-added them. It's possible may of the dates will change but these were published directly by Disney so you can assume that even if the dates change that it's on the plan for 2016 at some point.

I wholeheartedly agree that SM is in desperate need of a significant overhaul. I darn near got whiplash when the cart first grabbed the chain on the first lift hill. (Didn't stop me from riding it two more times though.)

The left side is much rougher than the right, IMO.

While I still love the ride, and nothing beats the sensation of hurtling through the pitch dark, I shouldn't have to count my fillings after riding.

As with a lot of things just what's in my head.

If it is just fresnel I'll be similarly impressed.
I thought I had heard it was a "multiplane" effect, with two layers of video displayed on separate planes within the apparatus. Not sure how that works. And as with you, it's just from what I can remember.
