Any of you live in Southern California? Where do you live, and how are you and your area affected by the fires?

Can you see the fires or smoke? Anyone hurt or affected by the evacuations?

My prayers go out to you all.

Anyway, I still hope to hear from our Southarn California friends, as to what they are going through.... The news is different from parsonal accounts.

But most of all I hope they are safe.

I live 40-50 miles from the closest fire, but this last weekend was one of the strangest weekends I have ever experienced. Saturday and Sunday were overcast, but not from clouds or fog, but from smoke and ashes. The sun was red all day. Eerie, very eerie. Driving down streets you could see ashes being blown around and it definitely smelled like fire all day and night. We went to the UCLA/ASU game at the Rose Bowl on Saturday and when we were driving home we were able to see flames from the Waterman fire.

My friend's grandmother lives in Lake Arrowhead and had to evacuate Saturday night after the power went out. She was only able to take her medicine and her pets with her; they wanted her out that fast. Thankfully, the fire hasn't yet reached any of the mtn. towns.

Today, it is not as windy and it is hazy, but not overcast. It doesn't smell. I was able to go to the car wash and wash the thin layer of ash that had built up on my car. I hope the worst is over.

Thanks for think of us West Coasters.

I´ve been reading about the fires and I hope they stop soon. :( Just like we have to be aware of hurricanes in the East Coast, the fires seem to be a yearly catastrophe in the West!
I hope you are all fine.

I live in San Diego, and it's pretty frightening. I actually just returned home today after two days of evacuation. I feel SO blessed, because I had a home to come back to. So many people here did not. When I woke up Sunday morning and saw the report, I felt safe being in the city itself. Within two hours, I was throwing a few belongings in a car and getting out of the way. I live just down the street from the Tierrasanta part of the Cedar Fire, where a dozen homes were destroyed. When I left, there was a blaze that had begun to jump the 805 freeway and was within a block and a half of my house. I returned today to find they'd containted it very well, and for that I'm eternally grateful.

The air here is just awful. I've been breathing smoke for two days, and it's gotten to the point where it made me sick to my stomach. Since about noon today, the smoke has been so thick around my apartment that I have to have lights on in my apartment just to see, and walking outside to be surrounded by a dark orange sky is just eerie. I think I'm in the clear for the meantime. They're getting a good handle on the in-city portion of hte fire. But I kept most of my stuff in the car anyways, ready to go just in case.

Honestly, though, I'm just glad that I'm safe, my rat is safe, and I have a home to go back to.

My girlfriend lives in Oceanside. I haven't been able to get in touch with her. She has five kids under age 12 and she's busy 24/7; but for once I wish it would be easy to get in touch.
My girlfriend from grammar school lives in Temecula.
I hope they are both OK.

new update..my roommate was on the phone with her mother at 7 in the morning and her mothers says that if everything goes right... her house will be gone today... isn't that the nicest news u can here when u get up...

Winds are coming from the West/SW today and much, much cooler. Smoke is blowing away from the LA basin and towards the deserts. A few of the fires seem to be coming under control. However, since the winds shifted, the mountain resort communities are at severe risk. My friend's grandmother is still under mandatory evacuation and the fire is in the town right next to where her cabin/home is..It is not looking too good today because after the sun goes down the helicopters and planes can no longer drop water/flame retardants.

It is definitely hard on all Southern Cal folks as the mountain resorts are where we all go at one time or another either as a weekend getaway or as a skiing weekend during the winter. Fires in So Cal have topped an area larger than the state of Rhode Island.

Well, one of the fires here in San Diego is now 100% contained, at least. The biggest fire, though (the Cedar fire) is only 15% contained. It's still racing through the areas east of the city, though.

One good note, the air in the city of San Diego has greatly cleared out today. We actually saw sun. I'm glad, cause at least for me, the smoke was having an awful effect. I've been breathing so much of it (and I haven't even really been outside) that I basically can't eat anything now. :/
