I agree. If Morbius flops, they might even extend their deal for more movies along the way, all to gobble them up before Apple or Amazon do.

Likely wouldn't pass regulatory scrutiny at this point. Disney would simply own too much of the major movie studios/industry.

I agree, but think the only thing Disney wants from Sony / Columbia Pictures is the Spiderverse. And Disney already owns it, so acquiring it means Sony and Marvel end the existing contract. No regulatory scrutiny required for this "acquisition". Let Apple / Amazon have the rest of Columbia Pictures....

Can they take Men in Black too? It is a Marvel property even if it isn't part of the Marvel Universe. I also wouldn't complain if they got a hold of Ghostbusters also. I'm wasn't interested in their reboot and am on the fence about Ghostbusters 3 so far. I think a fresh voice might do that franchise some good. Either that or give me a new Real Ghostbusters cartoon.

If Men in Black is under a license agreement, like Spider-man, then the same condition (let the contract lapse) could occur. I have not heard anything about that licensing agreement and if it has a termination date.

As for Ghostbusters, I now think you are in an acquisition mode, and inviting regulatory review. Buying assets is a no-no.... Re acquiring rights from a licensee on assets which you already own is completely different....

Disney needs to deleverage before they can think about thinking about M&A.

A hypothetical buyout of SPE would be allowed, but would have to go through scrutiny from the DOJ. And who knows how it would work in other territories. A better solution would be a conglomerate, led by Apple, Amazon, etc where Disney is a part of the conglomerate. Disney would only get the licenses back and distribution for previous movies in the license whereas the other entities in the conglomerate would get everything else.

Plus if Disney was to spend 10-20B to buy an IP rich company they could spend that to buy Square Enix, Capcom, and Ubisoft and acquire a lot of IPs while expanding their business.

Yes, and with all they can say Grace over with 21CF, I doubt they would want anything but the Spiderverse.

That's a great idea. They already collaborated with Capcom and Square Enix on the Marvel Vs. Capcom series and the 2020 Avengers video game. No wonder no other company's got the money to buy 4 companies at the same time if all this happens.

Related: I think the timeframe for this new deal is quite possibly related to Mobius and Venom 2. They come out in 2020 so if they underperform - which is my expectation - then it will make Sony even more desperate to continue the cooperation with Marvel. Conversely, if they succeed, then they might embolden Sony to not renew again, but hopefully it will at least allow for some closure for MCU's Peter Parker.

Also, the rumors of Holland's Spider-Man being about to appear in movies like Mobius/Venom 2 strike me as just clickbait. I would imagine it's true that Spider-Man the character can appear in those films but that doesn't mean it would be the Holland MCU version of the character, but an unrelated one.

People need to stop sharing articles from that site. They make stuff up time and time again. They typically post stories covering both angles. For instance they'll post a bunch of articles saying Sony will never get back with Marvel, and then others saying a deal is imminent. When one is right they'll just say "SEE WE TOLD YOU! This is from the same source who gave us the info on (insert previous articles that eventually happened)" That's not just with Marvel news. They have an article for just about every Disney film you can imagine claiming its getting a live action remake. If you search their website (I posted a screen cap) you'll see them claiming live action remakes of Black Cauldron and Treasure Planet.
