Soarin....into the future

So I have been a long time lurker in the forums, and finally just got the nerve to post. I just booked a trip to the world for Sept. and was thinking of changes I would like to see to current rides. I thought one of the rides that had the greatest potential for improvement was Soarin. Now I like Soarin, but i do not think anything over a 45 minute wait for that ride is worth it (but i know that has been discussed in other threads), so I was thinking what would make the wait worth it? This is what I thought might be possible in the future. Feel free to add any ideas, scenes, and effects you think would make this ride even greater!!

I've read the rumors on this site of a new film. For the new film why not shoot numerous scenes from across the US or the world for that matter and let the guest choose the film. I guess the best way to describe this would be a cross from the old Horizons ride and a Virtual Space Mountain ride. While waiting in line to board have a touch screen where everyone picks scenes they want to see to make each ride unique...majority rules.

Also when adding new scenes maybe they could add some new effects. To me the smells are great, but the opportunity for so much more is possible. Maybe add mist or water for a Niagra falls scene, maybe a shot of hot air while going over a desert, or freezing cold air and snow going through Alaska. How about watching the space shuttle lift off and have the whole theather in smoke (kind of like imagination at the skunk scene but without the smell).

Again feel free to add anything that would make this ride better. Please don't tear me apart too bad. If this is posted in the wrong spot feel free to move it. Thanks fellow Disneyaholics!!

Welcome to WDWMagic . You have some great ideas for Soarin' - expect for the smoke from the shuttle lift off - it might freak some people out (unable to see while being suspended, ashma, etc). But I wouldn't mind a good rumble effect :).

I like the idea of the shuttle taking off. I've been lucky enough to actually be on hand at the space center for a launch a few years ago and it was AMAZING! Even with the shuttle a few miles away you could still FEEL it as it lifted off into space!

One thing I think the current film could even use in general is transitions. Instead of the rough cuts how about some clouds. But not just a fly through the clouds and then we are in the next scene, but a step further and try a simple of effective effect of having Ln2 drop from the overhanging area so you seem to fly through a little 'fog' as you go through the clouds.

I think they should definately make a film soaring over the U.S. Starting that off with a shuttle flight would be top notch, but dont forget the shuttle program is no more in i think 1 year or so.

I am awaiting for someone to start crying that this was being discussed in another thread a few days ago...

However this is what I posted there...

I like Soarin and I honestly welcome a NEW video but me and I am sure everyone else would end up missing the old video too.

That said, if they can make the TOT have random drops, cant they do Soarin with a random film? Maybe have a Disney "land" themed video...1 video for each place there is a Disney Park...

With the waits, which never seem to get shorter even after all these years, you wonder if there is any push to change it because it is still so popular.

Another thought to spice it up would be to have a couple different films, so you don't know which one you will get. Something similar to ToT and it's different drops.

Fist get a Digital Projection, that can help make a random show.

To have people select scenes can be done, but it will have to go to the most popular.

To add more physical effects (smoke, cold, hot) can it be done? Probably yes.

Now I don't see it done soon since it can take several months to film all the new sequences, plus the availability of IMAX cameras and permits to get such scenes.

Plus I also don't think that Soarin' will ever drop popularity since it has been open for what, 8 years in California Adventure and 4 on Epcot. And still getting long lines on both

A shuttle lift off scene would certainly be dramatic, but the shuttle program is due to be retired late next year. If they added the shuttle, then the "new" Soarin' film would have an outdated look really fast. If they added a launch, it would be better to wait until the new program starts. The rockets that will carry the lunar vehicles are going to be larger than the shuttle system anyway, so when those launch, it will be much more dramatic than shuttle launches currently are.

Like I said I think if they change and get rid of the current video, within a year everyone will be crying they miss it.

i think adding some misting water would be a great addition to soarin. every time i ride it and we go over the river at the beginning and then the pacific ocean i feel like my feet should be hitting the water. some light (keyword: light) misting would be a really cool effect.

I'm afraid the projector isn't digital, so a choose your own adventure would be pretty much impossible. But, that would be nice.

I've always wondered, but I'm assuming the screen is rear projection. Does anyone know where they project from?

As someone pointed out, transitions are very rough.

I like the idea of a space shuttle launch.

It's not rear-projection. The projector's lens is centered, and above the top-most row when in the flying position. I've been meaning to look up when I'm unloading and see if I can pick out the lens in the darkness.
