Well, we've got 3 days to go. How's everyone doing? I'm really squeezing my creative juices right now, but but I love the product I've produced so far!
I'm doing great! I have around 75% of the total project completely done. I agree on squeezing our creative juices. It's hard to come up with something that is realistic, yet something that is still unique.

FEEDBACK PODCAST FOR THE RICK AND MORTY AND LANDMARK PROJECTS WILL BE GOING LIVE TONIGHT AT 11PM EASTERN/8PM PACIFIC.

I want to address that I am VERY sorry for lagging on my written feedback. There's no excuse for it. I know how frustrating it can be putting all that work in for radio silence. All I can say on my end is that I've been dealing with a lot of second-hand drama at work, so that mixed with my commitment to the podcast (especially now that we've hit the 1,000+ subscribers milestone) has sort of taken my focus all over the place the past couple weeks. I can't make any concrete promises, but I do very much want to get written feedback to you guys BEFORE the podcast goes live if I can. That honestly depends on how much of a Dementor soul-suck I get out of work today haha :p :p

You all are freaking AWESOME and I'm genuinely really stoked to see the end results of these projects. I think the selections made were all definitely top tier as far as offering the most creative potential. It's going to be a photo finish to see who gets into the final three for sure. Just to clarify, I am indeed off work with ZERO other commitments on Monday, so combing through each of the five semi-finals projects and giving detailed written feedback on each of them will be my primary focus throughout the day. By the end of that day (let's say around 10PM Eastern) we'll be doing a Final Three reveal podcast where I reveal the hand-picked selections of @JokersWild and myself, as well as the votes from the jury. (Jury stay tuned in the Ponderosa thread for how instructions on the voting are going to go down.)

Season 19, Act Eight: The Delightfully Different Dark Ride Suite
screen-shot-2014-03-26-at-6-54-29-pm_orig.jpg

In celebration of Walt Disney World's 50th Anniversary, let's go back to 1971. Attempting to recapture the magic of the original Disneyland, WDI updated three Fantasyland classics based on three classic themes:

Snow White's Scary Adventures - the scary ride
Peter Pan's Flight - the beautiful ride
Mr. Toad's Wild Ride - the wacky/ thrilling ride

Your challenge is to raze these classic attractions and create three new dark rides for 1971 Fantasyland using each of the three themes: scary, beautiful, and wacky. Your attractions can be based upon any Disney IP from and before 1971 with the exception of the IPs that WDI had intended to use in Magic Kingdom during development:

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Mary Poppins
Sleeping Beauty
Snow White
Peter Pan
Mr. Toad

This project is due Saturday, July 17th at 11:59pm EST/ 8:59pm PST.

Since I'm going to be gone for all of tomorrow I'll post my project right now:

In an ambiguous time period, Universal wanted to acquire the theme park rights to the very famous Lord of the Rings franchise. The problem? The Tolkien estate had lost the theme park rights to Ralph Bakshi, the creator of 1978ā€™s animated version of the Lord of the Rings, in a very intense poker game. Ralph Bakshi wanted total creative control of the ride with no executive interference if they wanted the rights. Universal executives assumed that this was because of previous experiences with creative interference and since everyone in the boardroom wanted the LOTR ride so much they agreed to work with Bakshi to create what would surely be the biggest ride in Universal Studios Florida, if not the entirety of Florida.

Unknown to them, Bakshi had a grudge with the CEO of Comcast, who years ago when he was an executive at another studio had made the decision to cancel his Mighty Mouse show. Bakshi decided to make a LOTR ride so unusual that it would surely bring an end to the entire company. It would be calledā€¦

RALPH BAKSHIā€™S THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE SEARCH FOR FRODO

Replacing Fast and the Furious Supercharged at Universal Studios Florida, RALPH BAKSHIā€™S THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE SEARCH FOR FRODO is housed in a theater styled entrance reminiscent of many Broadway Theaters youā€™d see in New York (as San Francisco will be replaced with a new New York expansion based on Times Square), but most similar to The Lyceum Theater. The largest difference is that instead of an undulating marquee it instead has more of a traditional movie theater one that gives the name of whatā€™s performing at the moment. Of course it gives the rideā€™s name along with noting that itā€™s a ā€œcontinuation to the 1978 animated classic!ā€
1628920508422.png
Guests then enter a regal theater lobby which displays posters of all the main characters from LOTR along with a short description for anyone unfamiliar with these characters. Guests then pass by the closed concession stand and into a hallway where the different theaters in this multiplex reside. The theater that guests ultimately enter is either Theater 6. Once inside, all the guests have entered, the pre-show begins on the theaterā€™s screen.

Ralph Bakshi walks into frame in what looks like a mythical forest. He introduces himself as the director of the Lord of the Rings movie - the other animated one and tells us that Frodo needs our help! He, Sam, and Gollum have gotten lost on the way to the Mountain of Doom with Gandalf and the rest of the Fellowship of the Ring needing us to use their special boats made by skilled elf craftsmen to journey through Middle Earth to find them. Ralph Bakshi then hands the preshow over to Gandalf (presented in a rotoscoped animation style) as he gives safety tips for navigating Middle Earth. Gandalf wishes the guests luck before they exit the theater into the World of Middle Earth.

Now the rest of the queue takes place in the streets of Hobbiton during the night where above guests are banners and flags set up for a welcoming back party for Frodo, Sam, Pippin, and Merry for once they return (and also hides the low ceiling of this portion of the queue). The cottages with hill-like roofs have windows where in silhouettes Hobbits can be seen conversing. Depending on the window guests can either overhear conversations on whatā€™s happened to Frodo and the rest of the Fellowship of the Ring or on more day to day affairs for the citizens of Hobbiton. After passing through the village, guests enter a shack that serves as the dock where guests will board their boats.

The boat vehicles are shaped very similarly to the ones in Pirates of the Caribbean and Itā€™s a Small World and have five rows with around 2-3 people per row. The boats have a fake thatched texture to them to make them fit in with the Fantasy style the series is known for. After guests board these boats, the boats will depart from the dock and start going down Hobbittonā€™s stream.

Going out of the village into a dark, mysterious forest, guests will hear on the boat the sound of mysterious and odd creatures roaming about. At least none of them are friends of Sauron (we hope!). A sign points towards a shortcut to Fangorn Forest that points downward. And down the boats go down a waterfall located under a bridge. Once the 15 foot drop ends, guests find themselves in the previously mentioned forest. There Treebeard resides, a giant tree that the route for the boats make a U shape around him. He tells guests that he hasnā€™t seen Frodo and gang, but wonders if they went back to Rivendell and also warns of the Black Clothed Riders roaming the lands.

Immediately after heā€™s out of sight, the boats go down a smaller drop where guests drop into the place where they first encounter the Black Clothed Riders! Their red eyes bleed out matching the forest in flames behind them as they swing their swords directly in the riders direction. Thankfully itā€™s a quick turn away from them where in the next scene they enter the opposite of fire: snow.
1628920832353.jpeg
Itā€™s now the Misty Mountains, where the blizzard blows strong all around guests and snow can be seen blowing on both sides outside the flume. Legolas is near a turn in the canal telling guests to go left, down the mountain. Advancing towards that path, the stream suddenly closes in that direction and the boats go right! After going right, riders see- Ralph Bakshi(!) of all people (or of all animatronics in this case). He says:

ā€œBet you didnā€™t expect to see me again! Ignore Koko the Clown over there and go this way, itā€™s much more exciting. I should know I supervised itā€™s design.ā€

The boats ā€œfollow his adviceā€ and go up a lift hill into a cave on the mountainā€™s highest peak.

Inside the cave is Frodo, Sam, and Gollum (who is tied up on a leash). Holding a torch inside the dark cave, Frodo says:

ā€œWeā€™re glad to have the company of fellow travelers, but you might not want to go that way.ā€

Going further we say why he said that: Thereā€™s an orc casino inside the mountain. Filled with orcs with viking-like horns, sharp teeth sticking out of their mouths and glowing red eyes, playing games like Craps games and card games. It looks like a mix of Las Vegas and a tavern meant for shady medieval marauders. Itā€™s a hub of scum and villainy so itā€™s better to get out before anyone noticesā€¦
1628920674022.png

Suddenly (again) itā€™s the Black Clothed Riders. Still on their horses in the middle of the gambling hall and ready to kill, the boats dodge them by going down a waterfall underneath them revealing a secret passage to the bossā€™s office.

Inside the office is an old giant overweight orc sitting on a bench. While smoking his pipe, he mumbles:
ā€œWhy do you invade my fine establishment and spit on it by flooding it with your makeshift boats? Go get ā€˜em boys.ā€

In the hallway around the corner from the office, Orc archers pop out behind various objects throughout the room with their bows and arrows and attempt to kill guests with them before hiding again. Guests feel the arrows fly above their head as spotlights reveal where the missed arrows went. After passing the hallways, guests make it unscathed and go up another lift hill where they hear the boss orc say:

ā€œItā€™s okay gentlemen, youā€™ll get to kill something somed- Aurggghhhhā€
ā€œSorry bossā€ another orc voice is heard saying.
1628920831056.png

Gandalf (through a Pepperā€™s Ghost Effect) appears on the top of the lift hill at the exit to the cave and tells guests that the Fellowship of the Ring will meet them for a feast in Rivendell. Outside now a beautiful landscape overlooks the city of Rivendell (represented of course by a mix of miniatures and two dimensional flats) in the distance. One last turn shows the black clothed riders armor on the ground armor rusting on the ground. A giant gate, the entrance to Rivendell, opens in front of the boat.

Inside the cityā€™s inhabitants are partying and in the center is a table with the entire Fellowship of the Ring toasting to their success finding Frodo and the rest. Frodo is sitting at the table next to Gandalf who is whispering in his ear and pointing at Gollum whoā€™s trying to eat one of the chalices. The boats then enter a tunnel where Ralph Bakshi holds a sign saying ā€œTo be continued - In the Holiday Specialā€. After passing him the boats go to the unload station (separate from the boarding station) where guests exit back outside into New York through a woodcarvers workshop.

THE END

One Day Left!!!

I'm seriously typing my stuff up now and well on track to finish tomorrow. I can't wait to share this project with everyone and I hope it exceeds the expectations of the judges.

Check back tomorrow for the grand debut!
I'm excited to see your project and of course everyone else's tomorrow (or today for some (most?) people here)! I'm glad I got mine done on Friday so I don't need to worry about it. It'll be sad to see anyone any two of us go at the end of the day, but at the end of the day it's necessary for a competition to be competitive. Good luck to everyone and may the best person win!
