One that always blows my mind:

The elephant that Dumbo is loosely based off of, Jumbo, was once owned by the infamous PT Barnum. Jumbo was getting very ill due to all the random things it was eating (not elephant food) and the rumour is that the price to get them fixed was so high that Jumbo was "accidentally" left on the train tracks when they were packing up to move cities and got hit by a train car killing them instantly.

While PT Barnum always claimed innocence it would not surprise me if it went otherwise.

This part isn't proven or anything but just a feeling of mine. But since I have discovered this and watched it again, Mr. Vandevere from the Live-action Dumbo gives me such PT Barnum vibes...

Heck of a place to finish this project.

It's incredibly impressive! And a great set that is representative of old hollywood epics like Ben Hur which were just Bat Crap crazy. Just a really odd connection for the entrance when the rest of the area has no thematic or visual or story connections to that era of Hollywood and the complicated history of the set and the movie.

The LA Noire is extra fascinating to me from my research since it is one of the few anachronistic things in there since it was finally demolished around 20 years before the game takes place. But the developers found it an interesting enough set piece to break their own rules for it.
I think it’s because it’s just that iconic. Intolerance was the first true blockbuster, wasn’t it? And that set was the largest constructed for the longest time (maybe still?)

At least from what I've found a lot of that reputation is played up and blown out of proportion. It was the most expensive movie ever made at the time, but it didn't take long for other movies to take that record. Metropolis and Ten Commandments just 10 years later both surpassed/matched it in both scale of the production and budget. Though the numbers get fuzzy because Intolerance was often reported as having a budget 3 times higher than can be proven.

It is very influential to more art house blockbuster like Kubrick, Tarrantino, and Nolan and is sort of the precursors to those, but I wouldn't call it the first blockbuster. It made less than its predecessor, Birth of a Nation, and is credited with leading to Griffith falling into financial ruin AND bankrupted the studio. It also, from my research which isn't exhaustive so I'm not gonna claim to be an expert, failed to strike a chord with the general public and was more just beloved by critics and other filmmakers rather than general audiences.

As far as I can tell, the reason that the Babylon Set such a reputation is how very publicly displayed the set was after they abandoned it. Helping it feel like a part of the landscape of the still growing Hollywood for the 7ish years it was just sitting there before it was deemed a fire hazard and torn down by the fire department. Right time, right place to make an impression even if the movie was a failure at the time and ruined the studio/director.

Yea, that Direct was kind of ridiculous how flimsy it really was. We got...

-Cadence of Hyrule DLC
-Some generic looking space shooter
-Some WWE game (we all know WWE makes TERRIBLE Switch ports, not that I care about wrestling games anyway...)
-Digital Devil Saga Remastered

So yea, arguably one of the worst Directs ever in my humble opinion. At a time when Nintendo REALLY needs some big 1st party announcements. I don't know what the hell they're thinking, but I honestly think a lineup this lackluster does their PR more harm than good. If it weren't for Pokemon Snap being a HUGE bucket list game for me, this year would be a total bust for Switch. Animal Crossing was amazing but after 300 hours I feel like I've done all I need to do with it and I'm really craving a beefy 1st party Nintendo release. I know Paper Mario just dropped. I'll be getting it soon but I've been hearing some mixed things about it.

After last week's Wayforward fiasco, I expected literarily the worst for this one especially with how the announcement tweet called it a showcase (implying no announcements). I fully expected reshowing old trailers and maybe a release date for something. I haven't watched the full thing yet, but it looks to be slightly better than what I was expecting. Nothing that I'm really interested in, but it looks like it was decent enough for SMT fans after 3 years of waiting for SMT V.

It sounds like Nintendo's planning more of these in the future, and I'm sure they'll all be pretty similar to this one.

If Nintendo wants to use Directs for 3rd party stuff and Twitter announcements for the big 1st party stuff like Paper Mario and Pokemon Snap that's fine, I just wish they'd confirm one way or another if official 1st party Nintendo directs are dead or not so we can stop getting our hopes up. Sounds like you were in the know more than a lot of people, but most of the Nintendo Youtubers I follow were actually expecting this one to be a return to form for the company and to really set the groundwork for the rest of the year. As it stands now, the 1st party landscape for the rest of 2020 is a barren wasteland outside of Pokemon Snap, and that doesn't even have a release date yet.

I know there was a lot of rumors of this direct being more, but the actual announcement for it last night did say pretty much exactly what it would be. A couple of third party showcases in a mini-direct.

Hopefully we do get a mini-direct soon. My understanding is that they've been waiting to announce things until they're sure they won't have to delay it. I guess they're having trouble working from home? Or maybe that's just an excuse for a light line up as we head to the end of the Switch's lifespan

So once again I get the feeling like I'm actively being punished for being loyal to Nintendo. That's just great. This is a company that really likes to screw over its fans and I'm getting kind of sick of it. Why the heck did they wait until MIDNIGHT to announce exactly what the Direct would be? Are they really HAPPY with the fact that Sony and Microsoft have full on consoles coming out this year and they've got NOTHING. It's a pathetic, PATHETIC excuse for running a company and I don't give a DAMN about Co-vid. That was their excuse last time and it's not stopping any of the other companies from actually releasing stuff on time. At this point, they just don't care about their fans. At all. They're actively screwing us over by not telling us ANYTHING about the games coming out at the end of the year. Just give us SOMETHING. If it had to be 3rd party announcements, did it HAVE to be such an unflattering and totally boring collection of games that are so niche each four of them will ONLY appeal to fans of their respective genres.

What happened to the Nintendo of the first couple years of the Switch? This is just completely unacceptable. It's like they have this built in, record breaking user base for their new console and now they just don't care. They're leaving the millions of fans who made this thing the phenomenon that it is completely out to try.

It makes me SICK as a fan who keeps DEFENDING this stupid company. I'm such a sucker. I'm never going to be loyal to Nintendo again. It's like being in an abusive relationship. I'm going to buy a PS5 and never look back after this.
