Did anyone else see that SNL skit that was on a few weeks ago featuring Chris Parnell and Andy Samberg? Well I did and it was the most hilarious thing I have seen on there in a long time. In it, the duo's ultimate goal is to see the Chronicles of Narnia...if you haven't seen it yet, here is a link to where you can watch the video of it.

I guarantee that you won't regret it!

And I mean, a LONG time... The show always goes through "high/low/high/low" phases. It was a somewhat high phase just before Will Ferrell left, and currently there's a low phase.

"They call me Aaron Burr the way I'm dropping Hamiltons"

I caught this show, and I have to say this was the funniest bit they've done since "More cowbell. I need more cowbell."

I don't think I've watched a single episode of SNL all year...

I've always been a big fan of SNL (as you can tell by my DVD Af homepage), but I have pretty much just stopped watching over the past couple of years. So I hear all of the hype about this rap video and I watch it and you could hear crickets. I guess I just don't get it or something. I thought it was somewhat amusing and clever, but I didn't think it was funny at all. Yeah Chronic is part of Chronicles, I get it. I don't think it's funny, but I get it. Parnell's raps on Weekend Update in the past were alot better than this, IMO. Actually I thought the taco commercial done earlier in this season was pretty funny. So if I am totally missing the joke here because I didn't watch the rest of the episode or is there something else?

Eh, I don't think there's anything too "deep" there. I thought it was funny in that it's a legitimate sounding rap (i.e., the rhythm and construction aren't stretched or fake-sounding), but the lyrics are about stupid, mundane stuff like sneaking food in the theater, going on MapQuest, etc.

Plus, I never find white guys doing the typical rapper poses and such not funny, but that's probably more just me.

Ah ok. I've seen stuff like that (even on SNL) a bunch of times before so I guess that's why I didn't find it to be funny.

If you're interested in a more serious deconstruction of the video, this article argues that its popularity owes to nostalgia for quirky old-school hip-hop and the fact that the humor isn't derived from white guys "acting black" but instead from white guys rapping about just plain dorky stuff.

I don't watch SNL, so I have no idea whether this is actually unique for them, or if it's just one of those inexplicable things that has caught fire for some reason.

WOW! That was an excellent article. And that makes sense to me, especially as a 21 year old white kid from a small country town that knows alot about rap history and whatnot. Looking at it from that angle, it does change things. I did find it amusing the first time, just not funny. Now I still don't find it funny, but at least it makes sense now. I don't know if the ideas of this article were shared by those responsible for making the video, but it makes perfect sense to me.
