Snakes

Hi, I have searched for some info on this issue but couldn't find anything on this board. I am quite scared of the thought of a snake getting into my hotel room - I have read a thread on this issue on another website and now it has put allsorts of horrible images in my head (so much so that I am thinking I may have to cancel the trip as I won't relax). I have been to WDW twice before - Stayed at Coronado in 07 & 08 and never saw any snakes at the resort, I am aware that it is Florida and that there are going to be snakes as they are part of being in Florida.

What I was hoping you could tell me is;

How usual is it that they get into the hotel rooms?

What precautions should I take when in my hotel room (if any)?

I really don't want to have to cancel my trip (we are booked to go December 18th-January1st at POFQ) but I am worried that I will not sleep or feel comfortable and relaxed in my room.

Thanks

I took his photo so I would recognize him as a repeat offender if he returned :lookaroun and then scooped him up and threw him out. I guess he squeezed through a crack somewhere, but it is possible he ran through a door as it was opened for someone to enter or exit the room.

They are very quick, and so tiny so they probably find it really easy to get past you without you seeing them.

We've been a fair few times, both on and off of WDW and have only ever seen 1 snake, which was a 3 inch long baby grass snake at Blizzard Beach.

To be fair to WDW, they took it seriously and cleared the area whilst the checked it out, but following mine and several other peoples descriptions they were satisfied that it wasn't dangerous and they couldn't find it anyway.

We've gone to WDW upwards of 45 times in the last ten years. The only time we saw a snake was in the vegetation near the Wilderness Lodge pool. Once reported- I'd say they had it captured within 5 minutes. (it was mating season- so they said)

Anyway- to get back to the original comment- never even heard of any instances of snakes in rooms. An easy solution to ease your mind----stay in a deluxe resort. There is very little access to outside ground entry. Rooms have entry through a hallway. Only ground level rooms would have balconies that might worry you.

Try not to let this worry keep you from having a wonderful vacation at WDW!!!!

In the past 31 years we've stayed at WDW dozens of times and have only seen audioanimatronic snakes.

I'm sure there are some out there. But as someone suggested, saying in a Deluxe hotel would virtually eliminate the possibility completely, as all rooms except those on the ground floor have interior doors.

In alll the trips we have made to WDW, I have seen 3 snakes... 2 baby Kingsnakes or Rat snake in Blizzard Beach a few years back and 1 Corn snake many(around 20) years ago at FT Wilderness. Never in our room, though.
We have had the Anole(lizards), some type of Gecko, and a Treefrog jump into our room from the balcony(kids left door open) over at OKW a few times. We just gently escorted them out.

I understand your fear but you really don't have to worry. I lived in FL for years and I saw less then 10 snakes in all that time. As a matter of fact I saw more in MI when I lived there.

I do have a scary snake story tho. This happened in FL when I was a teen. I walked out my front door and one our neighbors kids was out front she was about 6. Laying next to my feet was this huge snake skin. I remember telling the little girl that this was a really big snake and I told her it was long gone. Well, I saw movement out of the corner of my eye and this big snake was coming at us. Good thing I was young and could run like the wind. I picked up the kid and threw her on top of my mom's car and took off running. That freaking snake chased me!! I'm not kidding either. So I ran to my front door and threw the door open but it was right behind me so I didn't slam the door. Even tho it wanted to kill me(it actually wasn't poisonous) I still didn't want to hurt it. My dad was home luckily and he just picked it up and showed it to all the kids that came around and then released it somewhere safe. I didn't go outside for a day or two. :D

Snake got into my house one time, and not a baby. Scary as crap- but a funny/odd story nonetheless.

It's Florida, and it happens- but seriously, what are the odds?

I don't worry about it happening again because it was so random. To me, it's lie worrying about getting struck by lightning.

How did the idea that you may get a snake in your hotel room even start?

I've been going to disney at least once a year since 1994 and I have never seen a snake. Not even a little one.

I've seen frogs, lizards, a gazillion birds, moths, maybe a bat, but never a snake. I've stayed on the canals at Old Key West, where I'm sure snakes live, but have never seen one of them.

It sounds like you have an irrational fear, which is caused by anxiety. Reality orientation usually works well- that's sort of tough love for yourself. Talk yourself down when you start to feel anxious and try to be "rational" about the fear.

I've seen a peanut stand, I've seen a rubberband I 've seen a needle wink its eye.

Snakes.. Why did it have to be snakes...

Snakes are everywhere.. First it was snakes on a plane now snakes in a room.. I wouldn't worry too much about it...Sounds like a very few isolated incidents..

Dont worry about snakes! yes Florida has snakes what part of the country does not except Alaska? on occasion a fluke may happen when a snake could come in to a home but with a as many people there are and constant noise, snakes will stay away. Ive lived in florida for 16 years and havent had a snake in my house and i live in a rural part of the sunshine state.

Don't let a slithering snake spoil your trip get to disney enjoy yourself!

PS its your stay would be in the winter time and snakes are not as active during winter.

So i have had a snake experience at one of the resorts. My friend and i were at the pop century, setting on a bench by hour glass lake. When we heard the bushez rustling behind us. We thought it was just a bird and nothing else. We continued our conversation when i saw that it was no bird it was a black snake right behind my friends head. Man we both jumped up like little school girls. Laughing at the fact. The snake climb down outta the bush, made its way across the sidewalk, over into the grass and down to the lake. Not sure what kinda snake it was but it didnt harm us or try even though my friend and i like to joke about the time we were almost killed by a snake at disney world. LOL!

Thanks for sharing the snake experiences, they make me feel more confident that a meeting with a snake wouldn't result in a nasty snake bite. Glad to hear they are less active in December.

Even though we're all agreed that the chances are quite slim of a snake ending up in your room, I've actually been thinking about how they get in when they do get in. If they just slither in from the bushes when mousekeeping has the door propped open, then yes, I can see it being more likely to happen on a first floor room. However, I wonder if this is really how they are more likely to get in. They could "stow away" on the towel cart, in which case, they could end up on any floor, but in my unprofessional and always fallible opinion, I am inclined to think it may be more likely that they would find their way into the water pipes and come up through the toilet. I saw something on TV once where a family wondered where a rat was coming from and they set a video camera in their bathroom overnight and ended up with video footage of a rat swimming up into their toilet bowl from the pipes, and that is how he was getting into the house.

Now that I have given the OP cause to fear sitting on the toilet , I will once again reiterate that thousands, if not millions of people stay on WDW property every year and the cases of snakes in the room is extremely miniscule. I'm just stating a couple ways that they conceivably could be getting into the room on those very rare occassions when they may, indeed, be in a hotel room.
sounds like something that happens in Harry Potter.

I stayed on disney property when I go since 1993, i haven't seen a snake at all. I have seen gators, rabbits, squirels(which are the worst), ducks, and lizards.

Just to add grease to the fire:

More now than ever, people who sit down on the commode just to relieve themselves are being bitten in their posteriors by venomous snakes. The culprits include water moccasins and copperheads.

The Federal Bureau of Statistics reports that in 1997, there were 105 reported toilet bowl snake attacks, resulting in 17 fatalities. In 1998, there were 135 attacks and 30 fatalities. In 1999, 200 attacks were reported, and 50 fatalities. Why? According to Harvey Schitz at the Federal Bureau of Statistics, urban sprawl is to blame. "We keep building new subdivisions way out in areas that used to be wilderness, and have disturbed natural reptile habitats. This was bound to happen." Mr. Schitz added that people who live in the city are much less likely to be attacked in this manner. "Until new serpent-proof toilets and plumbing are developed, This problem is going to get worse and worse out in the suburbs. Maybe it isn't so dangerous back in the city after all!"

Please note that this is an Urban Legend. Notice the guy's name ....get it? It's a pun! Also there is no such thing as Federal Bureau of Statistics in the USA.
