Snakes

Hi, I have searched for some info on this issue but couldn't find anything on this board. I am quite scared of the thought of a snake getting into my hotel room - I have read a thread on this issue on another website and now it has put allsorts of horrible images in my head (so much so that I am thinking I may have to cancel the trip as I won't relax). I have been to WDW twice before - Stayed at Coronado in 07 & 08 and never saw any snakes at the resort, I am aware that it is Florida and that there are going to be snakes as they are part of being in Florida.

What I was hoping you could tell me is;

How usual is it that they get into the hotel rooms?

What precautions should I take when in my hotel room (if any)?

I really don't want to have to cancel my trip (we are booked to go December 18th-January1st at POFQ) but I am worried that I will not sleep or feel comfortable and relaxed in my room.

Thanks

i have seen 3 snakes in 8 visits to the world, one at the bar at all star sports, one at caribbean beach and a rattle snake at epcot. Also once had a snake in the log flume on splash mountain with me

I screamed like a baby on Splash Mountain without having a snake in the flume with me...I would have been 100 times louder with a snake in there too!

I can sympathize with you. I will be the first to admit I have a legitimate phobia of snakes. I can't even look at photos of them, anxiety is not the word for it. I took my kids to see the animal guy at the library and turns out he had a python and I ended up screaming and having to leave the room because of it. I also made my son throw away the shirt he was wearing because he had the disgusting thing draped over his shoulders. Extreme yes, I know, I can't help it.
Any way we stayed at WL in May and my daughter and I were walking on the boardwalk area near the pool and there is a tree that grows through the boardwalk and out come this reddish colored snake. It was at least a foot long and still going (I didn't stick around to find out how long it was) but I picked up my daughter and RAN and we decidfed to skip the pool until my husband was ready to come down with us. Then later that day we heard another guest saying how "snakey" it was in that area. I was so looking forward to staying at the WL but I think it ruined my stay there. I ended up powerwalking thru that area everytime we had to go catch the boat. As of now WL is off my list to stay at until I get over it or over my phobia :(

Sorry you had such a bad experience with snakes, most people have something that scares them it is a shame when those things are part of things we really want to do, but at least you managed to 'powerwalk' through the area and didn't avoid it all together - that's brave when you have a phobia of snakes, hope you managed to enjoy your trip other than the upset the snakes caused :)

While I have never seen a snake in a room at a Disney resort, I have had a snake to come into my condo, via dryer vent, at Orange Lake Resort. Scared me to death! I sealed the entire washer/dryer area off and prayed not to see another one. I went to get clothes out of the dryer and the snake was slithering just under the dryer. I screamed and scared it. It took off under the dryer...presumably back out...at least I hoped so!! Thankfully, I didn't see it again!

My DH saw one at POFQ last November early in the morning on his way back to the room from getting coffee. Itty bitty one that was trying like crazy to avoid him. Lucky it was him and not me.:) My GF saw one on a path at TL way back in 1997. She didn't see it and just walked right by it noticing people stopped looking at something. She turned around and about died. Another friend saw one before that in the water at WL and wasn't sure if it was real or just Disney making the wilderness more real.
None in any rooms!

I was at Blizzard Beach this past Monday and saw one of these:

It's a freaky lizard called a skink...it was under a lady's chair and she seemed a little freaked about it. They're weird looking but harmless.

Skinks are as common as sand in Florida. They are completely harmless unless you decide to eat one.

Playing devil's advocate here...what would happen should someone decide to eat one?
From my understanding the blue tail skink can be toxic if eaten...of course there does seem to be some debate as if that is true. Cats and dogs will eat them and cats in particular tend to have strong reactions to them that frequently end in death.

I was at WL in July 2008 and as I was walking to boat launch saw something black and long on the deck. I told my Dad to hold up - I think that's a snake up there and sure enough, some couple and their young daughter came up on us and saw it too. I said it was a snake, man said no - and started walking up to it. It raised it's head up like to confirm "hey, I'm a snake not a stick". Man backed off and we waited about 5 minutes and he slunk (is that a word?) back into the water. When we told the boat driver he said they are all over the area, but since it was early morning that is why we saw it. The boat guy said that since we encountered that snake in the AM, snake will now stay out of sight since it's busy time. They don't like us, not even a little.
On a side note, "Snakes, why did it hafta be snakes?" Indiana Jones
