Snakes

Hi, I have searched for some info on this issue but couldn't find anything on this board. I am quite scared of the thought of a snake getting into my hotel room - I have read a thread on this issue on another website and now it has put allsorts of horrible images in my head (so much so that I am thinking I may have to cancel the trip as I won't relax). I have been to WDW twice before - Stayed at Coronado in 07 & 08 and never saw any snakes at the resort, I am aware that it is Florida and that there are going to be snakes as they are part of being in Florida.

What I was hoping you could tell me is;

How usual is it that they get into the hotel rooms?

What precautions should I take when in my hotel room (if any)?

I really don't want to have to cancel my trip (we are booked to go December 18th-January1st at POFQ) but I am worried that I will not sleep or feel comfortable and relaxed in my room.

Thanks

How did the idea that you may get a snake in your hotel room even start?

I've been going to disney at least once a year since 1994 and I have never seen a snake. Not even a little one.

I've seen frogs, lizards, a gazillion birds, moths, maybe a bat, but never a snake. I've stayed on the canals at Old Key West, where I'm sure snakes live, but have never seen one of them.

It sounds like you have an irrational fear, which is caused by anxiety. Reality orientation usually works well- that's sort of tough love for yourself. Talk yourself down when you start to feel anxious and try to be "rational" about the fear.

You might as well cancel your trip. You have so much anxiety built up, once you get over the snakes you'll replace it with something else. I'm going to assume you suffer from anxiety all the time. Get some help. I went to WDW with someone that was suffering from anxiety. They stayed in the room about 80% of the time. They were miserable.

I wasn't worried about it until I saw some posts about it on another board and a few peole had to have them removed from the room - was just wondering if this is a regular problem or just a few bad experiences that had been reported.

I have never heard of this... I would imagine it's an isolated incident!

Can I ask what resort "they" were complaining of this problem? I can honestly say I've never seen a thread on this board talking about snakes in the hotel room (or anywhere for that matter)!

My number of Disney resort stays is pushing three digits and while I have seen snakes at WDW I have never had one in my room. I have lived in Florida for 38 years and the only time I have had a snake in my house was when my cat brought one in. To sum up you are worrying about nothing.

The trick to keeping snakes out of your room is close your door and leave your cat at home.:D

Hi Newfie Fan
The people mentioned a couple at POR (just little ones that were easily removed) there was one in the CR and one in POP. A couple of other people posted that they had found one in their bed but didn't say which resort they were staying in.

The topic I read was about someone getting bitten in CBR when they reached into the bushes. I don't think I would be too bothered about seeing one outside it is just the thought of seeing one in my room that worried me - When people have had a bad experience they will post about it and I just wanted to see if it is something that happens quite a bit or if it is just a few bad experiences and not really something to get worried over.

Thanks

Thanks Master Yoda, there isn't any issue with snakes in the UK so it is something that had never really crossed my mind until I spooked myself reading about it. I am sure as soon as I see the Disney Magic I will forget all about it!

There really is not an "issue" with them in Florida. Sure they are common but for the most part they are far more afraid of you than you are of them. 99% of them will try to get away as soon as they see you. Also the majority of snakes in Florida are non-venomous so even if you were to see one chances are they would be completely harmless. As long as you are not tent camping in Ft Wilderness I would not give snakes a second thought. People with strollers are far more dangerous.

I've only once seen a snake at my resort. We were staying at WL, had been a very rainy season and one was on the deck near the pool.

We informed the life guard. Wasn't a big deal.

I know what you mean about the strollers I got my anckle clipped a few times last trip.

It has been a relief to hear that people on this board haven't had any bad experiences, especially people with numerous trips under their belts.

I don't know what came over me - it was something I never really thought would scare me - until I read the post about someone made about one being in her bed. Glad to know I was stressing over nothing!

In almost 15 years of running this site I've never heard of a snake in the room situation actually happening.

Being Florida, there may be snakes in bushes etc, so don't go sticking your hands places like that, but the chances of one ending up in your room is close to 0.

I don't suffer from anxiety all the time, maybe my post came across as paranoid or something, sorry if it did ,but it was really only this one issue that made me worry - I certainly won't find something else to replace it with (I just wanted to seek clafification from others who have vistited WDW many times on their experience - not just people who have had bad experiences like on the other board). I certainly wouldn't like to spoil my husbands trip by being miserable.

Feeling much better about it after reading people's 'good' experiences of snakes at WDW (e.g. not seeing any, or them just being outside:)) Thanks.

Wow some people on these boards need to refrain from diagnosing other people from a post. Just because someone has heard a few bad stories and is nervous about something does not mean they have an anxiety disorder. Ok, enough of that - just had to say my piece because that was ridiculous to say that stuff to the OP.

I don't think you sound paranoid - sounds freaky to me to hear people saying there are snakes in rooms. However, I have stayed on Disney property 20+ times and have never seen a snake at all. Don't worry about it and enjoy your trip!

I'll go along with what others have said and say that you really don't have anything to worry about. Yes, it's Florida and snakes are as common there as mice are up here, so sure, it's always possible that a snake will end up in a room, and I'm sure it has happened before. But the odds are very slim. With as many rooms as Disney has and as many people visit per year (in the millions I'm sure), any experience of snakes in a room is probably a very small fraction of a percent. But I'd say the odds are probably about as likely as an alligator coming out of the water close to where you're sitting. Could it happen? Sure, but very unlikely.

Thanks everyone, I am feeling much better about it. Having calmed down and thought about it, just because it can happen doen't mean it is going to happen. It has been a relief to hear that it is unlikely, I really don't know much about this sort of thing as it isn't really an issue in Britain.

I think the odds are so low it is worth the tiny 'risk', I will still probably check under the bed before I go to sleep on the first night though :lookaroun

Are you sure you want to do that?

Just adding another post for reassurance. I have lived in South Florida the majority of my life, and I have stayed at Disney/non-Disney hotels countless times. I have never experienced a snake in my room. You have nothing to worry about.
