I don't know why they can't have one or two out of the way designated smoking area in each park. It doesn't hurt anyone despite the dramatic claims of some that detecting the slightest scent of a cigarette will give them cancer. I'm a non-smoker and have asthma and allergies and I still think people have a right to choose to smoke as long as it's in a limited area. Most smokers are courteous and willing to confine their smoking to a designated area when provided one.

What they really should forbid and enforce is all the idiots ruining my ride experience by filming and photographing with their bright phone and iPad lights/flashes.

The irony is that I’m giving smokers enough credit to assume that most will follow the rules, whereas you guys and others are predicting mass rebellion. I guess time will tell.
Seriously,
I mean come on, I highly doubt there is going to be a mass boycott of Disney nor do I think we will see a barrage of people sneaking puffs.

Smokers will adjust like they have to the millions of other places that are banning smoking.
Hey maybe it will encourage some to stop smoking.

I agree with you. I feel like this is what generally happens with most rules Disney implements... or really most rules in general.

There will always be people who think they are above them, a few in this very thread. I’m very skeptical of this DOOOOOOOM some have predicted that somehow the parks are going to turn into a smokers’ free for all.

I expect most will follow the rules. There will be a subset who don’t. Some of them will be caught and will be asked to put out their cigarette or go to the designated point. Most will. An even smaller subset will ignore this request. These people are jerky jerks but then, there are always some jerks in the parks. What can you do?

At some point, Disney could maybe ‘punish’ them for their rule breaking. Who really knows? But I get why their approach in the beginning is to not impose any punishment. There are going to be growing pains all around with the new policies (even down to the loose ice).

My hope is that people will be respectful of the smoking rule, regardless of how they personally feel about it. I’ll still have no problem pointing out rule breaking to the nearest CM if I consider it disruptive.

Perhaps I’m unusual, but I find WDW the very opposite of stressful. I don’t understand why anyone, smoker or not, would go to a place that irritated them so much.
I generally find Disney very relaxing...even just sitting and people-watching is enjoyable for me. I'm generally a very laid-back, even-keeled person. MANY smokers I know, are not.
Smoking increases stress in the long run, so naturally those people are going to be extra stressed in any situation to begin with. The stress argument isn't a good one.
Anything to back up that claim?

Disney has the right to make the rules as they see fit, it's their sandbox. Maybe they figures a blanket ban is easier than having to keep smoking sections.
I do agree that for the most part smokers are courteous but unfortunately I also think they are fighting a losing battle. As more and more information about how toxic it is, is decimated, the more and more folks want smoke free environments.

They must be a non smoker to make a claim like that. Sometimes, even for just 5 minutes once or twice during a long day it does help

This is a citation so not a complete study but they are studying the psychological effects of smoking

Again, nobody's rights are being trampled on. Our personal rights end(for the most part) when we step foot on their property and agree to adhere to their rules and regulations. They are being generous in allowing anyone to smoke anywhere on their property.

I find it amusing that people are talking about "rebelling". I mean seriously, rebelling against not being able to smoke at a family theme park is beyond amusing. I can see flooding their guest relations with emails and phone calls, but some folks are making this out to be the next American Revolution.

The main problem I foresee will be overseas people for whom english is not their first language.

I'm pretty much done with WDW anyway, but as a smoker I always made sure to only smoke in the out of the way smoking areas. Some of them were placed in really dumb spots. Seems like just making sure they are more isolated makes more sense than this, but oh well.

They're isolating them to outside the gates. In all fairness, I'd rather have space inside the parks be taken up by attractions and stuff.

So call it “Smoking: The Ride”. Non smokers are as likely to go on it - as I am going to Swiss Family Treehouse

Cause after walking 15 miles that’s exactly what I want to do - walk up a tree.
