Exactly. I think we’re losing sight of how much of a sea change there’s already been. It wasn’t that long ago that you could smoke in restaurants, workplaces, and even airplanes. Things are radically different now, and the vast majority of smokers have adapted accordingly. The Disney ban is really a tiny shift in the whole scheme of things, and there’s no reason to think that smokers, after having acquiesced to so many more significant measures, are suddenly going to start rebelling in droves.

The average person is not in a restaurant for 8-10 hours, nor is eating in a restaurant generally a potentially high-stress situation. That's a false comparison.

So I’m smoking around the world today. Have made it a point try and hit all of them in the parks I’m at and to strike up convesations (more than I usually do. Plus I wanted to say goodbye.)

Have hit both in the MK and am sitting in between China and Norway right now. The consensus is: “Screw that......Disney doesn’t have enough staff to enforce that”.

A simple “excuse me..you can’t smoke here”. Isn’t going to work. Zero Tolerance is the only way to curb this. Let’s see what they do.
Zero tolerance actually doesn't work - it's been proven time and time again throughout history.

.....can't imagine anyone saying, 'Hey, guys, let's head over to Sea World, we can smoke there!

I've known many people who would choose one restaurant over another because they had a smoking section. If you've never been addicted to a substance, then maybe don't try to say what somebody who is would do in a given situation.

What about long-haul flights, then?

None of us knows for certain what will happen, but I really doubt it’ll be the disaster that some here are making out.

Long haul flights are in a confined space. If you had an airplane the size of EPCOT with 20 flight attendants and didn’t have to worry about “tampering with or destroying” and all they would do is say “excuse me, you can’t smoke here”.......what do you think happens?

Do you think the average person takes a lot of long-haul flights? I'd wager that most Americans have never been on a plane for longer than 4-5 hours. Most people traveling to WDW were on a flight for 2.5 hours or less.

Not to mention the fact that lighting up in a giant theme park filled with thousands of people and where there is no punishment for doing so would be much easier than lighting up in a small confined plane where federal law prohibits it. Just like your restaurant analogy, it's a completely different thing and still a false comparison. Shall we move on to offices, where smokers get regularly scheduled breaks?

And not to mention most CMs are confined to their areas. Not a lot have freedom of movement. If Disney is not planning a “smoking patrol”. This is never going to work.

Which begs the question.
Why do people refuse to pay attention to History??
I'm amazed at how many people here don't realize that most humans are willing to put up with quite a bit of hassle and inconvenience but when they reach that point where "Enough is enough" there is often rebellion of some type.
I don't believe that there will be any violent action over a smoking ban but there may well be a backlash of guest adherence to the new smoking rules.
You cannot regulate every aspect of human nature and one of the most persistant aspects is the human predilection for ignoring what they feel are oppressing rules and laws.

The irony is that I’m giving smokers enough credit to assume that most will follow the rules, whereas you guys and others are predicting mass rebellion. I guess time will tell.

Here's something many are failing to consider...

  • Disney parks are more crowded now than they have ever been - getting around can be stressful.
  • Rudeness from other guests is a VERY common complaint = stress.
  • Many rides require an hour wait or longer unless you have a FP = stress.
  • Even quick-service dining locations often have a significant wait involved = stress.
  • Knowing they will have to exit huge parks to relieve their stress with a cigarette = stress.
So here we have Disney, who has made what was once a very relaxing environment into a stressful one, piling on more stress all the time and now forcing a portion of their guests to work even harder to relieve that stress than they had to before.

Excellent post. Let's not forget the portion of the population that is actively trying to remove evidence of our history that they feel "isn't nice".

Again, literally nobody is going to be trespassed for smoking, just like they aren't trespassed now if they smoke outside the area. Stop pushing this ridiculous false narrative.

I know trolling is your thing, but we have an official statement that there isn't going to be any kind of "punishment" for people who smoke. It will be handled the same way it is now... Largely ignored because CMs don't make enough to care or subject themselves to the abuse.

Disney doesn't ban people for breaking a minor park rule. The smokers aren't criminals for goodness sake.

I'd disagree with CM's not handling it. I've had to ask several CMs to ask someone to stop smoking and they've done it every time without any attitude or anything. As a matter of fact, the young lady working at the Gaston's gift shop store was more than happy to tell this man and his wife to not smoke in the little corner by the trash can and the wall. I think it's irresponsible of senior leadership to create a policy and then not truly enforce it yet put their hourly folks in the middle and think that's okay.

I absolutely agree with your last statement, though. It's not that serious.

Perhaps I’m unusual, but I find WDW the very opposite of stressful. I don’t understand why anyone, smoker or not, would go to a place that irritated them so much.

Smoking increases stress in the long run, so naturally those people are going to be extra stressed in any situation to begin with. The stress argument isn't a good one.
