This seems to have all the hallmarks of CM's getting tired of getting berated by entitled guests (I've seen this in person) when the CM tried to police the previous designated smoking location policy. After a while CM's just stopped trying to enforce the policy because they got tired of the attacks from the guests violating the rule. After enough complaints from CM's management seems to have decided to take it to the next level and just drop a full ban on everything so no guest has any valid argument for smoking anywhere in the park.

And that's what you choose to do.
Yes but my choice to remain healthy has no negative effect on you. I don't care if you choose to hurt yourself (Cut yourself, starve yourself, etc.) but if you choose to smoke, you're affecting both my health and my experience. Think of it this way, would you care if i was cutting myself as an addiction, absolutely not, but if everytime I cut myself I would run over to you and whip my dripping blood all over your face, clothes, and into your mouth for you to take into your body, I'm sure you'd have a problem with it. The bottom line is that your addiction is your addiction, keep it private and don't expect others without that addiction to suffer because of you.

im not challenging disneys legal right....im challenging a social trend of tearing down anything that you dislike. my opinion on this matter specifically is that from ops stand point its a poor decision and difficult to enforce (disney is already amazingly lax with enforcing rules period) so the net effect is likely negative on overall guests both smokers and non. However i guess yoy can advertise smoke free theme park? because gaining what minimal amount of additional guests that might garner is exactly what disney world needs?
I was part of the last generation that smoked in bars, you would come home reeking of smoke. I remember thinking it was ridiculous that I could have a beer, but not smoke and it was hard to give up having a cig now and then when out for a drink, and I was the definition of a casual smoker. But you know what, I got used to it and so did everyone else to the point where when you used to see dozens of people outside a bar lighting up it is now a dwindling few. Look at like this, if you are nudist, great be a nudist at home, but if you want to be at places where nudism is not allowed, play by the rules.

Then they won’t do it...which is of course is the point.

Like tobacco taxes...the point is to get you to where you won’t take yourself

Ah but here's the problem:

I don't smoke; hate smoking; have had family who have died of lung cancer; dealt with a parent who smoked on-and-off through much of my childhood. Personally, I'd like smoking to just not happen as much as anyone - probably more than most.

but...

A few years ago, took a trip to the MK with extended family. Brother--in-law became increasingly irritable as the day went on. Finally got to the point where he was snapping at everyone in our group including his own three year old child over stupid stuff. He was being rude to cast members in lines, complaining about absolutely everything and making us all miserable as I'm sure he had to be helping to do for anyone else in ear-shot of him.

Eventually, his wife clued us in to the problem. We got him to a smoking area, used restrooms and wasted about another 5 minutes.

He came back from his little oasis in Tomorrowland like a man who had just found God.

Having to leave the park so he can get his smoke on would have seriously sucked for all of us. Thinking there was some easy way he was going to go to the front and then meet back up with us when he'd never been there before and didn't understand where anything was, also would have been a mess.

I'm lucky enough to pretty much never go with smokers but this one time was an eye-opening experience for me because prior to that, I'd have been right there with you.

This is a societal social-change kind of issue. It's something that most of us (non-smokers) want to be the norm. The problem is Disney making themselves the tip-of-the-spear when it comes to that change. You're already in a place where people can be stressed and tensions can be high. This just adds to it and the impact can be felt by plenty of non-smokers, too.

The other night, someone was smoking right in the middle of the mob of people waiting to get back on the ferry at park closing to go back to the TTC. Not to be judging books by covers too much but he looked like the kind of person who was fine doing what he was doing, knowing it was wrong.

You could see people's disgusted faces in the extra-wide queue when they came in contact in the switch-back but who was going to complain to him and risk an altercation? At that time of night, who was going to leave their family to go find a cast member to come do something about it? The guy got away with it and that was in a situation where he had options.

He was a jerk. I'm in no way saying he was representative of most smokers but I see a change like this pushing more people who, yes, have what I consider to be a filthy, dirty, dangerous habit but who are also reasonable and responsible and don't want to offend others, into breaking the rules.

I might be wrong. Really hope I'm wrong.

That's one way to look at it. Here's another -- my house is my own private property. Do I have the right to ask my guests to smoke outside?
I smoke outside my own home, now if say I'm smoking where you ask me to, but still have ppl complain that I am smoking at all which in essence the DSA, that's always frustrating to me. Heck I've had ppl come outside during parties/gatherings and ask me not to smoke on my own property. The gate to their car was quickly pointed out much to their embarrassment.🤣😂

No
DH has mentioned canceling June res now because smokers "aren't welcome".
It's not that you aren't welcome. You have an addiction. For now, you smoke. Your addiction, however, directly impacts those around you. It's been proven that secondhand smoke is harmful even more so to those around than the actual smoker. Why should the rest of us be in harm's way because of your addiction?

I understand the frustration of having to walk to the front of the park. I'd be lying if I said I weren't concerned about more people just lighting up wherever. This isn't, however, a policy designed to make smokers feel lesser or shame them into quitting. It's a policy to protect the health of all of the other visiting guests.

And this is why I said "polarizing" ladies and gentlemen.

Enforcement on this will be incredibly difficult, but it is a great move for those of us who don’t smoke. I also hope that e-cigarettes count as smoking for Disney.

Vaping is also not allowed. It won't be enforced, I can almost guarantee it. Smoking is still a big thing internationally. It was smarter to try and contain it than attempt this. It won't work, whether I agree they should have done this or not. I just know it won't work. But kudos to them for trying.

Whether we like someone smoking or not, they have that right, it's not illegal (not saying you MF, but can everyone get off their soapbox please? it's always the same juvenile back and forth). Just like someone has their right to get drunk and act like a fool in the parks. We don't have to like it but that's their right. It will be hard to enforce. People vape wherever they want.

It's different banning smoking from indoors. Outdoors, while still of course, their property meaning they sure as heck can ban smoking, is harder to enforce. I just know they're asking for problems. But again, kudos for them for trying. I really didn't think they would.

And let's not kid ourselves here too, how long will the stroller thing be enforced as well? Management and the parks don't often hold people to the rules they set. Just saying ... they're so afraid of pushback. I'd love to see them actually get tough. But they won't ban anyone they catch smoking. So no one should hope for that.

Personally? I think the smoking ban is to combat the future marijuana legalization. It's going to eventually be recreational. They don't want the hassle. JMO. They had no problem with smoking sections for almost five decades now. The timing is interesting. Hope folks aren't thinking Disney is doing this out of the goodness of their hearts ...

Right...but that is the human - not the chemical itself...

And I’m “told” I’m not allowed to hate the humans 😉

no you cant hate the inanimate object that does nothing until a human misues it in this case drinks well beyond what is probably neccessary to feel better :)

Look, I'll tell y'all straight up. Smokers are a dying breed (literally and figuratively) - their numbers are dwindling... While at the same time, vaping is, err... Picking up steam at an unprecedented rate. More so the younger the individual... Who will respect this situation about as much as anything else at that age - not one bit. When there are no options left (smoking areas) you get it when and wherever you can.

This will bite Disney in the behind, like I said.
