Anyway the details aren't really all that gory, just disgusting. He was eating steak for dinner Friday night and after swallowing a bite, it just stuck in his esophagus, because it had seized almost completely shut. He could breathe fine, but could not swallow. Anything. Being stubborn (and male), he waited till Saturday evening to go to the ER, where they quickly transferred him to the OR and removed the food. Today, he went for a short procedure in which they actually stretch the esophagus, allowing for a more normal opening. This was the second time he had this done. Last time was a year ago. Apparently this is a pretty common condition. I'm just grateful that they could fix it so quickly, without actually having to cut him. He came home 2 hours after the procedure and ordered Chinese food. His first solid food since Friday!

WOW! I missed this whole story. Glad to hear he is OK now.

I can relate to this story. My mother has the very same problem. She has had an esophageal stricture for a couple of years. It actually gets worse when she is stressed. She has to cut up her food real small and take her time while she is eating. She had to be rushed to the hospital about 6 months ago because she choked on a piece of chicken and could not get it up or down. The doctors had to remove it in a small surgical procedure. She has to have her esophagus dilated about every 6 months with special dilators. She has Nitroglycerine tablets that the doctor gave her to use in an emergency to dilate the esophagus. It is scary thing to have.

Since I won't be on tomorrow:

Happy Thanksgiving *huggles* for everyone! It's my favorite holiday.

My days have been busy lately. Everyone eat lots of turkey and watch the parade! The holiday season doesn't exist without the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
