Shutdown!

As a 27 year federal firefighter this is my second time involved in a shutdown and this one is bad. At 12:00 today our chief, chief of training and two inspectors were told to go home. We were advised that all of our leave time(days requested off) were cancelled until further notice. We possibly will not be paid next week but all my brothers still come to work it's what we do.
The stress level is pretty high here but we still continue to do our jobs. If you take a day off you loos money and God forbid if one of gets hurt on the job we have no workers compensation to fall back on as there is no one here to put in our claims so no work no pay.
Never seen it this bad. Been doing some serious soul searching and wondering after 27 years and see what our Government has done to this country and us it might be time to go..
if anyones house who in congress catches fire dont put it out until they end these shananigins ;)

I'm home because of all this. I have a bad feeling we won't see our pay this time. There are many who are in a worse position than me, new employees and the younger ones who are just starting out and weren't ready for this. Those of us who have been around a while know to be prepared for this foolishness. I am going to work on my Disney planner and tote for my trip next summer to take my mind off it for a while! (Hopefully I will still be able to afford it by then)

My 15 year old nephew came home from school yesterday and said that his History teacher told them that teachers were not getting paid because of the government shut down. So now, because of this obvious misinformation, my nephew believes that none of his teachers are getting paid (which of course is not true). Got to love the misinformation that people are dishing out.
Hoping and praying for a resolution soon to the shut down. It affects more people than we think about.

What is wrong with people? I am trying not to upset my 13 year old with all this. If any of those student's parents are teachers that was very upsetting.

It does affect more than the public sees. I will have to take business from restaurants we usually go to, the baseball training facility my son uses, the hotel and shops where I was supposed to go to for my anniversary this month. I hate to have to make them pay for this as well, but I have no choice. Those people are being hurt as well.
Thanks for your prayers, very much appreciated.

My daughter's husband graduates from Navy boot camp this Friday. They were supposed to move to South Carolina next Friday. They are supposed to be getting pay but, their move may be delayed until the shutdown is over!:cry::banghead::arghh::(

You know, when "we the people' do not work...WE don't get paid !!! So I say that if Congress and the Supreme court does a "shut down" then then ipso facto...they should NOT get PAID !!! Let's see how they like it !!!

Congress is acting like a bunch of children and refusing to work together...I also think that we should do to congress what my Mother used to do to us kids when we would scrap and not work together...She would lock us in a room together and we could not come out until we had a plan and all agreed to it. So none of this 'shut down' stuff, more like a "lock in" !!! Sometimes you just can't beat the old mom and pop brand of wisdom !!!

Active Duty Military is still funded so he will still be getting paid. Only retirees and disabled vets are not going to be paid at this time. He should still transfer just moving her may be delayed.

I predict that they will be paid. They'll all take time off and they'll all be paid for it later.

Do you not remember them saying these same things 20 years ago? I do. I'm that old, lol.

They said people wouldn't get paid and widows wouldn't get Social Security checks...but the checks went out and everyone got paid for the time they didn't work.

Fret not. :)
Yep, I remember that also..... Damn, I sure did miss out in my choice of careers?....

Tourist sites are pretty well shut down on the mall in DC. The area around the Vietnam Memorial is nearly deserted.

I am part of "they". You must keep in mind that there have been threats to shutdown that were averted because it involved a full shutdown and threatened their largest groups of voters, medicare and social security, who put the pressure on.

The times they did shut us down, the pressure from those groups got them to figure it out in a hurry

They wised up this time, it is only partial and since those programs aren't threatened, the pressure from those large groups is gone so they can take their time. Also, just have to say that we have been through varying numbers of furlough days in the past few months and were not repaid, and because they were spread out, could not get unemployment to make up for it.

This is definitely nowhere on the scale of some of the things said on here, but there comes an issue when I am supposed to be doing an assignment only to find out that the websites I need will be down for as long as this government shutdown lasts... o_O

The World War II memorial is closed, but some congressmen moved the fences to let in a group of WW II veterans yesterday. I'm glad the veterans got to see it, but it was clear the congressmen were using them as convenient props for a little political grandstanding.

Fencing blocks tourists from climbing the steps to the Jefferson and Lincoln memorials.

Ohio Drive along the Potomac River is normally lined with cars and tour buses.
