The FHA is down too. so anybody planning on funding a new FHA mortgage is out of luck. We have customers affected by this as well as many commision based loan officers.

This is definitely nowhere on the scale of some of the things said on here, but there comes an issue when I am supposed to be doing an assignment only to find out that the websites I need will be down for as long as this government shutdown lasts... o_O

Most people don't realize the little ways gov't operations effect them. Hopefully you will be able to get back to what you need to do soon.

Anyone here home today because of the federal government shutdown? I have a lot of friends who are affected. One posted on FB that she wouldn't have bought so much Halloween candy already if she knew she'd be home all day with it. I work in downtown DC but not for unkasam, so I am still here at my desk, hard at work posting on WDWMagic.

(Please keep this non-political or the mods will shut down the thread - no need to offer opinions on whether shutting down government is good or bad, or who's to blame for what.)

For someone named unkadug, you would think I would have gotten that right away....I found myself wondering who un-Kasam was....Some kind of Hindu naysayer

Is that the site if the African American History Muesum? Glad to see they are getting ready to go vertical.
That's it - it's scheduled to open in 2015. I don't remember seeing so many cranes for the American Indian museum. Maybe I was just never down there at the right time.

One Little Spark...
As a 27 year federal firefighter this is my second time involved in a shutdown and this one is bad. At 12:00 today our chief, chief of training and two inspectors were told to go home. We were advised that all of our leave time(days requested off) were cancelled until further notice. We possibly will not be paid next week but all my brothers still come to work it's what we do.
The stress level is pretty high here but we still continue to do our jobs. If you take a day off you loos money and God forbid if one of gets hurt on the job we have no workers compensation to fall back on as there is no one here to put in our claims so no work no pay.
Never seen it this bad. Been doing some serious soul searching and wondering after 27 years and see what our Government has done to this country and us it might be time to go..
I just wanted to chime in...if you have a workman's comp claim, I am fairly sure you'll still be able to claim, but you'd need to do so directly through the provider / company.

Federal law requires workman's comp companies to be posted in the employee break room (pink cardboard, most likely). The claim can be filed directly with the company. Normally, HR departments handle this, but, the service hasn't gone away (unless the government self insures workman's comp, but...I'm pretty sure they don't).

My 15 year old nephew came home from school yesterday and said that his History teacher told them that teachers were not getting paid because of the government shut down. So now, because of this obvious misinformation, my nephew believes that none of his teachers are getting paid (which of course is not true). Got to love the misinformation that people are dishing out.
Hoping and praying for a resolution soon to the shut down. It affects more people than we think about.
Well, unless they work for the DODS schools...not sure what's going on with those...

My DS is affected and may not be able to join us next week, but his family will still be able to come. He's in the USAF and has been told that all leave may be cancelled.

As for knowing full-blown what is going on...I'm a bit like @luv ... I had to stop watching the news because it was too stressing. I like being nice more than I like knowing what is going on every minute of the day. I get enough news from blurps on the net and will dig further if something catches my attention...watching it day-to-day...not for me.
Yes!

I decided to start watching again and saw films of people and children who had been gassed. Ugh. Don't want to see that. It's just too depressing. People being gassed, blown up, beheaded...people starving and suffering...I used to be able to watch it all and then make dinner or talk on the phone or whatever. Now, it causes me to tear up and stuff...I just stopped watching.

I watch local news on occasion, but they hold to local stuff. I fast forward over sports and traffic. Even loco, though...murders, the ground swallowing that guy in his bed last year...upsetting and depressing.

The federal government shutdown will not have an effect on me, personally, but I hope everyone who relies on them is able to find something else or some way to get through until they un-shutdown...whatever that is called (re-open? Can't be shut-up, lol.)

They had a clip on in the doctor's office (waiting room) today. Some WWII vet said that he'd done his job and now he'd like the government to do theirs. Well said. A bunch of vets had travelled to see the memorial and someone opened it for them. Exactly what the point is of keeping old vets in wheelchairs from visiting a memorial, I'm not sure. But someone moved stuff so they could go see it. :)

As I recall, that's because there were structural concerns after the earthquake. Nice to see it get a facelift though.
National Cathedral also required repairs after the earthquake. They have to raise private funds for it. Replacing gargoyles and such.

I really don't understand blocking off the monuments. As long as you have a few Park Police on duty - like they do - it's not as if someone is going to back up a truck and steal Lincoln's statue.

Yeah...if the old men in wheelchairs want to see their memorial, they should be able to do that. I'm not even sure they need police to do that. If they want to go, let them.

Honestly, it costs more to buy barriers and pay people to put them up than it does to just let the old guys go see what they want to see.

I felt badly for these very old men who made the trip. Another good reason to not watch the news! Wish the doctor would play a nature channel like the car dealership does. :)

I think it just a publicity thing to get people all worked up. Close down the most public and accessible vestiges of government to get people's attention.

The car dealership is smart, they don't want potential buyers seeing anything negative on the news that may change their mind about spending a substantial amount of money.

The doctor on the other hand makes more money when you are stressed and all worked up.
