Shredding the Gnar with Magic Friends

Does anybody here do the coupon thing?

We had dinner with a friend last weekend who was telling me how she LOVES looking for deals and matching coupons with sales and everything. That SOUNDS wonderful, but for someone like me who has a full-time, 50 to 70 hour-a-week job, is it even feasible for me to make a dent in my grocery bills, considering the minimal amount of time I have to dedicate to this? I checked out couponmom.com, but it all seems overwhelming. How much time goes into all this stuff? And how much do you save in return for things you actually need?

I don't do coupons, Kat, but I have a friend that does, and she is SERIOUS. It seems to work for her, but I tend to forget I have coupons to use before they expire. :o I'm getting more airheaded in my old age.....or so I try to rationalize with myself.

Beautiful Friday here! Went to Walmart to return something and made a start on Joel's summer wardrobe, swung by AAA and got Universal Orlando brochures, so I can start thinking about his vacation social story book. Four months to go for vacation! :sohappy:

Well, y'all, since we're on the subject...

When I kick it, I don't want a Mass. I want to be laid out in my parlour and it is a rule that everyone stroll on up and say "Oh, she looks so peaceful!" Bring the kids. Also, I want a Coors Light in my right hand and a Marby Light in my left. Then I want to be cremated and my urn taken to Reese's in Warminster. Slap that up on the bar and then go to the juke box and play Frank doing "The Lady is a Tramp". And then "That's Life".

After that play a lot of Backstreet Boys.

Consider this my Living Will.

Also? I am a major "yes, please do resuscitate, " .
:ROFLOL::ROFLOL::ROFLOL: Love you, girl!

Well, when I asked for my vacation planning DVD I also indicated that I'd like more info on DVC. Got a call the other night from Todd, who said he would be sending me something in the post.

Holy cow...these DVC people? Do not screw around. FedEx just dropped off the info "packet".

I do the coupon thing. And I did it back when I was working "full time". Which is totally a joke now that I think about it. I actually work more now, but I digress.

First you have to think about where and when you shop. I'm not one of those fantastical coupon mavens you see online. I don't do the programs that require a lot of in depth tracking what you get so you can recieve rewards dollars or anything. Just cutting out the copons in the Sunday paper, then looking at my local grocery circulars and matching them up. I only cut out the coupons that I actually use, for products that we go through a lot. When you add the coupons on top of sales, you can make out fantastic. I almost never buy anything that's not 1. On sale, 2. With a coupon, or 3. Generic. Seriously. NOTHING. And it's not that tough of a time commitment either. I actually really look forward to cutting coupons out every weekend, (I know I'm a dork.)

I bought myself two check files at Walmart, you know, the ones with the little tabs and the slots to put cancelled checks? I labeled each one for the different types of coupns I use.. "Breakfast" "Soups" "Desserts" and such and stick them in there. At the end of every month I clean them out and toss the expired ones, which also serves to remind me what coupons I still have.

Yay!! I take it you got the DREAMS blue book? (unless they've changed it since I got mine)

Enjoy. We love ours. (And if you call, ask for Tony, he's our rep.)

Thanks for the info!

(And before I go on, I want to clarify that I TOTALLY think all that you and the other moms do is work. I hope it didn't come across like I didn't. I just meant to say that I spend 50-70 hours away from the house in an office, where I couldn't take time here and there to do coupon stuff. And when I'm home I still have the cleaning and cooking and :brick: LOL! I'm seriously thinking of a career change by the time I'm a mom!)

So, how much time would you say you spend "couponing" in a week? And does it make trips to the grocery store longer?

While DH and I stick to a good budget, with the huge expenses we're about to face this year, I'd love to save even more...

Oh heck no.. I didn't think you were being disparaging or anything. If anything, I'M being wistful for the good old days of working in an office!

I'd say it takes me about 15 minutes on weekends to cut and organize the coupons. And I take the circulars and plan out my meals once or maybe twice a week. It doesn't take long. Usually I plan out 3-4 main meals, make a lot, and eat the leftovers another night.

Also, I totally cleaned out my basement closet and made it a satelite pantry, so I can stock up on non-perishables when they're on mega sale AND I have a coupon. I recently got 6 48-oz tubs of Jiff Peanut Butter for $10. I'm good on Peanut Butter till the end of the year!

Nope, that's the one! It is pure awesome.

I have Todd as a rep, but when I call him back, I will specifically mention you as my referrer.

Huh...I can't believe referrer is a word.
