regardless of what people here feel... flash on the dark rides suck, period!
if you don't know how to use your tools why even bother?
You don't have to be a pro, but you need a camera that can:
1.) a camera that can handle and produce clean images at a high ISO
2.) have fast glass
3.) a steady hand and great breathing techniques
I get so damn angry when people are flashing away with a soccer mom DSLR or a point and shoot, or ANYTHING if they aren't using a tool that generates an acceptable image. Your eyes are better lenses than the crap you're using and/or the equipment you simply don't know how to function.
