I had this as part of a reply in another thread, but decided that I could actually probably do more good with it here.
As for the CoP debate.....if they're watching that, they have also probably figured out that the people who want to keep it will be the ones making all the noise...the rest are content to let it go away quietly (or not so quietly). Either way, they're not going to decide the fate of a ride solely on a website chat forum. For Disney to get rid of a ride takes a lot of factors, the most being attendance (CoP is only open seasonaly...bad start...if it was hugely popular, WDW would keep it open year round.) Then come surveys of the people in the parks asking what rides they've ridden and how they rate those experiences. Most of you have seen the people with "disney research" shirts on wandering the parks asking guests questions late at night. This is how they make decisions on where to improve...if they find a low score for something, you can bet your bottom dollar they're gonna try a fix for it...even if that means bringing in a bulldozer.
Remember....people like the "save cop" and "save toad" groups are very much in the minority. They may be a vocal minority, but they still are well-dwarfed by what most people say and think. Also, Disney knows that these groups tend to be a bit unstable, and even a bit hostile. They have been known to take precautions to protect themselves and their guests against these types of groups. I remember when Toad was going away, and the "save toad" group did nothing but make themselves look foolish in the end because they started trying every tactic in the book to save it. But in the end, you all see how well this group did. They lost....not because they didn't care, but because they were outvoted by many many more people. This is FACT....don't try and debate me on it. Don't let these vocal groups fool you...little "web polls" and "save CoP" petitions are going to amount to nothing, because in the end, Disney will continue to do what it takes to move FORWARD.....funny how CoP will disappear someday to make way for the very thing it teaches about - progress. The parks MUST continue to evolve and change. If WDW didnt' get rid of rides, there would be empty show builidings everywhere, because some rides would simply get NO attendance. The numbers speak for themselves. Not one guy who says "well it was packed and got a standing ovation the day I was there", because another person (me), can say "There were 5 people in the theater, and 2 were asleep when I went." So there goes your public opinion....ends in a stale mate. I'd love to sit and discuss the matters of why rides should stay and go, but any discussion I've ever seen ends in hostility, because the groups that want these rides to stay refuse to bend their ideals even a little bit. Like tramp said...."I like change as long as nothing changes." These groups like to brag about being all for the progress of WDW, as long as it fits their narrow definition of what that progress should be, and how they interpret what walt's vision would be many years after his death.
Walt Disney was a horrible businessman....that's why he needed help. That much has always been known. In fact, if not for the intervention of others, his dream and his vision would never have been accomplished. He was forced to sacrifice some of his ideas to make others work....new and better ideas. In fact, his vision of Epcot is nothing close to what it is today. Do I see these "save CoP" groups boycotting Epcot because Walt had nothing to do with any phase of the design process? I think not. The people left running the company were left to make the big decisions. And they did a damn god job of it. Why not trust them, sacrifice some dreams and visions to accomplish something even bigger.....even better than before.
That is the TRUE spirit of Walt Disney.....make the masses happy....Not make the 5% happy.
